Lake Gregory (ග්‍රෙගරි වැව), sometimes also called Gregory Lake or Gregory Reservoir, is a reservoir in the heart of the tea country hill city, Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka. Lake Gregory was constructed during the period of British Governor Sir William Gregory in 1873. The lake and the surrounding area make up the Gregory Lake Area.
Gregory Lake in Sri Lanka: A Historic Landmark in Nuwara Eliya
Gregory Lake was created in 1873 by the British-era Governor at the time, Sir William Gregory, supposedly for the purpose of providing electricity. However, the lake was mainly used for leisure and recreation after it was built. At its peak of fame, Gregory Lake was the most prominent attraction in the area and was used as a place to relax by many visitors.

Recently the hilly district of Nuwara Eliya received a complete facelift by the government. With these renovations, the Gregory Lake area, which is located right in the center of the Nuwara Eliya town, has been converted into a sort of Lake Park with many recreational activities.
Now visitors can follow the ancient British era tradition of relaxing picnics on the shore of the lake, or more modern leisure activities such as rides in swan-shaped paddle boats, normal boat rides, pony rides along the shore, water walking balls, watersports such as jet skis, windsurfing and etc. As such with these many attractions Gregory Lake is a family-friendly historic location in Sri Lanka, attracting many holidaymakers who visit the country.

The lake is also the landing location of amphibious aircraft belonging to the Sri Lankan Air Taxi service which provides scenic domestic flights in Sri Lanka. In addition, Colombo can be reached in a very short half-hour by using the newly built highway, in case of a visitor needs to return to the capital immediately.

Located in Nuwara Eliya, Lake Gregory was constructed in the year 1873. Also known by the name Gregory Lake, it is a wetland converted into a beautiful lake. Used for recreational purposes, the lake is visited by a large number of tourists every year. The lake is located in the heart of the city. Activities in Lake Gregory
Boat Ride: It is one of the main activities to do in Lake Gregory. Tourists can take a speedboat ride for around 20 minutes on this lake. It is a beautiful lake and one can enjoy the beauty of the place from the boat. The sights are just unbeatable and the weather of Lake Gregory will leave you mesmerized with its cool winds. One can also choose from a swan-shaped paddle boat. It will cost you around 1500 rupees for a Jet water scooter.
Horse Ride: There is also an option of pony rides or horse rides for travelers. Lake Gregory in Nuwara Eliya is the perfect spot for an exciting horse ride. Trotting around the lake on a pony will cost you around 750 rupees for a half ride and 1500 rupees for a full ride.
Cycling: One can also hire a bicycle and go around the park cycling. One will definitely enjoy cycling around the park with cool winds blowing.
