I don't automatically agree. For instance, the stop-motion shot. I get why Joe Dante prefers/believes that there's a "charm" to stop motion, but that scene is just OBVIOUSLY stop motion. CGI would do better at making the Gremlins believable in that case. Likewise, there are some seams (some literal) in the mass of Gremlins in the theater that CGI would have solved had it existed. But yeah, on the whole, having something present on set the actors can interact with form emotions with (love or terror) is superior. Farscape is a great example. Jim Henson company puppets bringing aliens like Rygel and Pilot to life, and the actors being able to physically interact with the puppets, the puppeteers being able to improv right alongside the actors, made a kind of magic. The first time Crichton hit Rygel, the bean-counters panicked because the puppet is expensive and breakable, the puppeteers were excited because physical interaction sells the reality of the creature.
Billy's mother is a stone-cold bad-ass compared to him. That lady does NOT tolerate home invaders and I reckon she'd have cleaned up the town all on her lonesome lol. I love this movie for a number of reasons, but the WILD tonal shifts are part of the magic. In one scene you have Gizmo having his head bandaged, another has THAT story from Phoebe Cates. Gremlins is a totally rewatchable classic from a talented group of creators.
In the bit where Billy bandages Gizmo's head after he falls into the dustbin when dazzled by the mirror, when he opens the cabinet the camera moves to momentarily put Gizmo off-screen. This was so that an also-off-screen crew-member could switch the Gizmo puppet to a different one better suited to the scene in question.
In the commentary, Joe Dante talks about Kate's speech being a HUGE sticking point. The executives hated it, and demanded Dante cut it out. He refused, believing first that it was a big mistake to set up "Kate hates Christmas" and then never pay it off, but more that he felt the speech encapsulated the tone of the movie as a whole: on the face of it, it's ridiculous. "Your Dad was DUMB enough to try and ACTUALLY climb down the chimney like Santa Claus? WHILE holding a ton of presents? YOUR FATHER WAS AN IDIOT!" But if someone actually had that happen to them, was telling you that story face-to-face, you'd have to try and empathize with them, respect the tragedy and horror of it. Even Steven Spielberg wasn't a fan, but while he was a producer, he considered "Gremlins" Joe Dante's film, and if Joe insisted it stayed, Steven wasn't going to cut over his objections. Apparently, up until the film was loaded into projectors in movie theaters to start being shown, the studio was trying to get it cut, prepared to sent letters to all the theaters to physically cut the scene out of their prints.
"Now I have another reason to hate Christmas." "What are you talking about?" "The worst thing that ever happened to me was on Christmas. Oh, God. It was so horrible. [✂] And that's how I found out there was no Santa Claus." Sweet Christ! 😳 Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Zach Galligan. Location Location Fact: The set for Kingston Falls is the same one used for Back to the Future (1985). Both movies were filmed on the Universal Studios backlot. PG-13 Rating Fact: This movie and Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom (1984) are credited with inspiring the MPAA to create the PG-13 rating. Many felt the movies were too violent for a PG rating, but not violent enough for an R rating. Practical Security Fact: Zach Galligan recounted in an interview that when the movie was made, there was no CGI, so all of the Gremlins were animatronics, each costing between $30-40,000. When everyone left the lot for the day, security would have everyone open the trunks of their cars to make sure they weren't stolen. Mythology Fact: A gremlin is a mischievous folkloric creature invented at the beginning of the 20th century to originally explain malfunctions in aircraft, and later in other machinery, processes, and their operators. Depictions of these creatures vary widely. Stories about them and references to them as the causes of especially inexplicable technical and mental problems of pilots were especially popular during and after World War II. Christmas Nightmare Fact: The "Santa Speech" proved to be controversial and studio executives insisted upon its removal because they felt it was too ambiguous as to whether it was supposed to be funny or sad. Director Joe Dante however stubbornly refused to take the scene out saying it represented this movie as a whole, which had a combination of horrific and comedic elements. Executive producer Steven Spielberg did not like the scene, but despite his creative control, he viewed this movie as Dante's project and allowed him to leave it in. Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990) would later hilariously lampoon this ridiculous speech, which I highly recommend.
Okay! The Mythology fact! I remember seeing an old Bugs Bunny episode where there was this little Gremlin flying a plane, and I couldn't stop thinking about that when the neighbor in this movie kept talking about Gremlins in machinery!
I loved this film when I was younger. The way the score slowly evolved into the main theme throughout, and Billy's Mom is a badass in the kitchen! Great reaction guys 👍
Lots and lots of Easter eggs in this one... This movie and the second Indiana Jones are the prime reasons we have pg13 now, someone mentioned the clock tower is from back to the future, that's the whole town where the skateboard scene takes place. When Billy is talking to his dad on the phone, hgwells time machine is in the background, then disappears with the blip sound. And Howie Mandel is the voice of Gizmo (kaka)
This is how you make a 1980s children’s movie: make tons of cute creatures and then murder them in every horrible, disgusting way you can imagine. Oh! And don’t forget to break Santa’s neck and leave him stuffed in a chimney for a few days. In case they don’t get it, be sure to outright tell the audience, in no uncertain way, that Santa doesn’t exist! 😂 The 1980s kids’ movies made me the psychopath I am today 😂 It’s so messed up though! I loved it. I even bought the book, which was an adaptation of the movie. The 1980s did everything backwards… and that’s the way we liked it 😂
Spielberg was being kind of a prankster with this one. I was a kid when it came out, and all the TV ads were cut to focus mainly on Gizmo, often not even showing the monsters. Then there were toy commercials, McDonalds ads, etc, and it was all marketed as, “Steven Spielberg, the creator of ET, presents.” Imagine parents reactions when they took the kids to this and saw that it was definitely not ET part 2. And Warners doubled down for a long time. The later VHS copies were still released as “Warner Family Entertainment.”
Puppets, Christmas, Critters... Have you guys seen "A Muppet Christmas Carol"? It checks all the boxes and is an excellent christmas movie as well. The best retelling of A Christmas Carol I've ever seen.
One of my favorite childhood movies. I was 13 the year it came out. It was directed by Joe Dante, a director whose films I grew up watching. The original Piranha from 1978; The Howling, a werewolf movie with the mom from E.T. ; a segment for 1983's Twilight Zone: The Movie; Innerspace; The Burbs, with Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher; Matinee; Small Soldiers and Loonet Tunes: Back In Action, a blend of live action and animation, with all the classic Looney Tunes characters and Brendan Fraser. His movies made my child and teen years amazing and wonderful.
YES!! One of my favorite Holiday themed horror movies ever made! It was produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Joe Dante. Be sure to watch GREMLINS 2: THE NEW BATCH.
Please do Bill Murray Scrooge. I'm sure someone already said it but Gizmo was voiced by Howie Mandel. Same voice as Bobby from Bobby's World lol and Skeeter from The Muppet Babies
Originally, Stripe and Gizmo were the same character. This changed when executive producer Steven Spielberg insisted one of the Gremlins be a good guy with whom the audience could identify. Director Joe Dante expresses that this decision was the reason why the film is fondly remembered. A different kind of Christmas movie is Violent night (2022)
Okay, this show is AMAZING even if you don't like Westerns you need to see this show! You WILL be hooked from the first minute to binge watch all the seasons! It starts with one season of 1883 then it goes to the same family in the show 1923, then it has 5 seasons in present day called Yellowstone... I CANNOT believe that MTV did this show! Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Sam Elliot, Harrison Ford, Kevin Costner... I can't believe the lineup of talent! This is the BEST Western saga ever!
@27:48 that's a clever and subtle reference to when ET hid among the toys in E.T., except Stripe isn't bothering trying to blend in. I hadn't noticed it before. But Joe Dante directed this film as produced by Steven Spielberg. And you could say the whole movie is Dante's nod to Spielberg, but he continued to develop that style, such as in The Burbs, which is a fantastic black comedy.
Hi Chandra & Jordan, great to see more people enjoying this classic for the 1st time. Merry Xmas to you both, your family & all the other commentators & viewers of your channel. :)
Ever since I saw it when it was new in the summer of '84, Gremlins has been a Christmas favorite for me. Mrs. Deagle yourself if you don't understand why this isn't just a Christmas movie, it's THE Christmas movie 😈
Fun fact the set for the city is the same set for Hill Valley in Back to the Future. The Theater that all the Gremlins watch Snow White in is the same theater Marty crashes in when he returns to the present at the end of the movie. Howie Mandel does the voice for Gizmo.
@@maplenutsreact you're welcome! i want to give some recommendations : *_solution to c0piright issues_* IMAGE EDITION : - Edit the movie scenes with % of transparency (and/or text) - Flip the image of the movie from Right to Left AUDIO EDITION : - Put the volume of the movie lower than the volume of your microphone (not too low). (Statics, White noise & your comments , make little distortion to the audio) - Record the audio of your reaction separately from the audio of the movie, that way you can mute/edit the audio/image of the movie without muting/editing the audio/image of your reaction. those edits helps a LOT with the alg0rithm PLEASE REACT TO *Rush Hour 2 (2001)* WITH THE BLOOPERS
The street Billy & his parents live on is Colonial Street, which is on the Universal Studios backlot. Colonial Street was also the location for The ‘Burbs…& interestingly Corey Feldmans character in The ‘Burbs lived next door to the house that was formerly 1313 Mockingbird Lane…the home of The Munsters. The Kingston Falls exteriors were also shot in Courthouse Square on the Universal backlot. Courthouse Square was the location for Hill Valley in Back To The Future. The cinema the Gremlins watch Snow White in, is the same that Marty crashes into….& the bank Billy works in is the same place that was used for the diner in Back to The Future.
Here's some nerdy info dumping: 1. The term 'gremlins' comes from WWII era superstition/inside jokes that when the mechanical devices/planes etcl would malfunction/have bugs... They'd say it was the 'gremlins' that got into the planes etc (actually, it might mostly be an airforce thing) 2. The set is actually the exact same set for back to the future hill valley (the theater is the same one that the DeLorean crashes into, and the bank is where the Cafe is) 3. this movie is responsible for the "invention" of pg13 (before this, in the USA, there was only G, PG, R, and X)
To answer a recurring question, yes, this is a horror-adventure film aimed at young teens. It's a slightly older version of shows like Goosebumps or Are You Afraid of the Dark? (though those came later). Not too scary for adult horror fans, but gross in a way that kids tend to like without being too explicit. You'll notice that all the human deaths happen in ludicrous ways where we don't see the body and there's no nudity or sexuality beyond nervously asking for a date and a fairly chaste kiss. By the way, since you like cheesy horror with little puppet creatures, Full Moon Features specialized in that. They were a super low budget, direct-to-video company back when you could survive based on the rental market. They're best known for the Puppet Master series, but I prefer Subspecies. My favourite murderous tiny creature series, though, are Ghoulies and Critters.
I wouldn't say it's "no horror", there is some creepy stuff there - never put me in that hallway filled with gremlinwebs please - but it's definitely a different direction than classic slasher movie vibes. I love it.
This movie is a classic. Did you know the town clock tower is the same clock tower as in the movie Back To The Future. I met John Glover who in the second film of the movie in 2013 and in 2023. He is one of the kindest people to meet
@@maplenutsreact nice. If you ever watch Gremils again. You can tell at the very end of the movie where they are in town walking to the theater. It’s the same spot in Back To the Future for the Delorian runs down the street and Marty is running to Doc Brown when he says I’m back from the future. You’ll notice everything looks the same but they made winter effects in Gremlins. The clock tower is actually at The Warner Brothers studio in Los Angeles California. I went there as a teen with my dad
For more little creatures, watch Critters (1986) and The Gate (1987). Although they wouldn't be your best-performing videos, I think they're worth reacting to. 😃
Not horror related. But the life and adventures of santas clause. The old one that looks more like claymation. I think it might be stop motion. Has a tiny bit of lord of the rings or famtasy elements to it that makes it unique to all the other stuff like this i grew up with.
When my mum's cat had babies, one of them looked exactly like Gizmo. She'll be 16 in april but she'll always be my baby Gizmo. And yes, when she's being naughty I do warn her with a "Gizmo Kaka"😻
Historical footnote: Gremlins had a fairly innocuous movie poster, so many parents thought it was a children's movie, and took their young children to see it in theaters. Many ended up carrying their children out of the theater crying because they were traumatized by the violence in it. Back then, though... you had G, PG, R and X for movie ratings (not all X rated movies were "adult" (pron) movies, some horror movies carried that rating due to the graphic violence). This movie was one of a couple that led to the creation of "PG-13" to bridge the gap between PG and R. The movie "Red Dawn" (1984) was the very first PG-13 rated movie. It's funny that you mentioned Gizmo looking like a Furby, as I still have my Furby "Gizmo" from the mid 1990s.
Hi Jordan & Chandra!😊 Wow! I can't believe you guys haven't seen this. "Gremlins 2: The New Batch" (1990) is also a lot of fun and kicks things up a notch. There is an animated series starting this month on HBO, so there is renewed hope for a "Gremlins 3" movie. If you are looking for another Christmas film, "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" (1989) is fun. Great reactions to the original Gremlins, Maplenut Kids!!!!🎬👏👏👏👏
the genius of this movie and the sequel is unmatched in modern cinema. you got a mythical fairy tail monster that was "created" in WW2 as a means to explain away air plan malfuntions (gremlin) WHo springs from a furry creature that is named froma chinese word that means Devil or demon (mogwai). in the first movie you got a dad that is an inventor , use can't amke one invention that works for very long , all his inventions break down in relatively short order... adn here he is giving his son a present litterlaly breaks down in very short order , to create a plauge of the aformentioned monsters. in the 2nd the seting is in a ultra furturistic offic building where nothing manages to work ever.
Part of Gizmo's cuteness is due to some cunning manipulation on behalf of the creature crew and director, Joe Dante. Many different designs were drafted in pre-production, and when they landed on a design they really liked, they colored that white-and-brown to match Steven Spielberg's dog, so that he would be predisposed to greenlight that design. 10:46: I LOVE the chemistry between Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates. Billy all nervous when he asks Kate out, Kate's restrained "God, TOOK you long enough!" as she says yes, his puppy-dog excitement after she says, then slamming back to trying to play cool and her little smile that says "Yeah, we both know you're a dork, but that's okay, that's why I like you."
The idea for this Gremlins came from a Twilight Zone episode where Will Shatner is on a plane and claims there is a gremlin on the wing but no one else sees it except him.
This is one of my favorite movies. I have a gizmo that I put on top of my christmas tree every year . The second one is really fun I would recommend watching it
Kate’s story about the death of her father is something the director refused to cut from the film. In a way it’s a perfect representation of the movie. It’s dark but also absurdly funny. If I was forced to pick an apocalyptic scenario for our world, I’d go with Gremlin outbreak. Our destruction would at least be hilarious and entertaining.
AWESOME score composed and conducted by Jerry Goldsmith. Love that "Gremlin Rag". He also scored the sequel as well as made an appearance in both films.
One of my favorite films. The story is well crafted and has the perfect mix of horror and comedy. The original screenplay was much darker, but it was being passed around a lot and people weren't sure what to do with it. Spielberg was called in for ideas, which is how he got involved. It was his idea to keep Gizmo cute, and to add more comedic elements into the film. Steven Spielberg even has a cameo in the film, it's very brief though. This film is the reason why we have the PG-13 rating. There had been other films before that showed the need for a new rating, but this was the final push for it to be created. Before this film there was G, PG, R, and then the adult ratings. The ad campaign for this film only ever showed Gizmo, so parents assumed this was just a family friendly kids film with a cute critter in it. They had no idea what was waiting in the rest of the movie. So tons of parents took their children to see this film, and had to deal with the nightmares that resulted in seeing it. Hoards of angry parents called theaters, and this anger was passed on to the MPAA, which handles the rating of films in the US. The rating PG-13 was created for films that are too much for a younger child to see, since before then it was just PG, leaving that up for Parental Guidance if a child could see it or not, but with advertisements for films starting to be more cryptic and subtle, parents didn't really know if a film was safe for a young child to see anymore.
The first movie is DARK, the second is a deliberate spoof parody. It's the only way director joe dante would do another gremlins movie. It's full on cartoon mayhem!
One of the best christmas movies ever great reaction guys 😊we all knew Changra would love Gizmo nothing cuter and to a slightly lesser extent the gremlins!
For an unconventional Christmas movie, I HIGHLY recommend 'Night of the Comet' from 1984. It's a well done 'B' movie with an underappreciated soundtrack and I think you'll enjoy it. Cheers.
This movie was largely responsible for the PG-13 rating. Before that movies where PG (For most audiences) or R rated. This movie was not Friday the 13th Calibur R rated but it was also not a movie every kid could handle. It fell in between both. So they made PG 13 to cover those movies.
Christmas-themed horror films? There are lots of them, but these might be worth a watch: Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984), Black Christmas (the 1974 original), Anna and the Apocalypse (2017), and Christmas Evil (1980). Other Christmas-themed films that are worth watching: Trading Places (1983), Brazil (1985), Santa Claus vs. The Devil (1959), Bad Santa (2003), and Batman Returns (1992).
Random bit of info. This film (along with Indiana Jones & the Temple of Doom) had so many complaints for being too scary for their PG rating, that it resulted in the creation of the PG-13 rating the following year.
I love how the Gremlins movies are basically PG excuses for R-rated gore Also… Showing the water cup spilling on Gizmo creating five and then the single drop creating one was a brilliant choice, because when Stripe jumps into the pool we already know that volume of water is what determines how many are created.
If you've never seen it before I recommend Jim Henson's Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas. I remember seeing Gremlins when I was a little kid in 1984 in the theater. Even at the age I was when I saw Gremlins in theater I loved the horror aspect of it, that definitely helped me become a horror fan. I also saw the sequel in the theater but it didn't quite appeal to me as much as the first movie, even though I still bought a copy of it.
I saw this in a theater when it came out. I was 11 or 12. Definitely stuck with me😁 Looking back now the most odd thing about it was it was released in the summer… some still argue it’s a Christmas movie 😉 me included
Great reaction, y’all are awesome 😎 GREMLINS 2 : The Electric Boogaloo, is crazy insane. KRAMPUS and A CHRISTMAS STORY, should check out Great video, keep it up 👍
