I used to think this guy slows down (because he's not good enough to hear himself slow down) when he has faster bass drum rhythms....then as I listened to more jazz music I realized he's just being jazz drummer/solid musician and plays for gretchen parlato....he's doing it on freaking purpose, which simply means he's a genius. Love this guy
Standard: metrum is the master - the drummer is servant. But here we have truly a revolution: metrum is servant and drummer is master. Guiliana is a hero no matter you like it or not.
Lots of people bashing the solo on here. Look closely though, it's motivic development. Listen to the beat/motif he plays at the beginning. He then builds upon it using orchestration/dynamics/subdivision/etc. Don't overthink it. (look at similarities at beginning and then at like 3:15)
the "opening up" of the groove around 9:00 is delicious before it goes back to "triple time"...whatever other people say...this is absolute masterful playing...taylor is one of the great young cats..this band with kendrick scott on drums blew my mind at Monterey Jazz 2010
When someone steps outside your aesthetic criteria you have a choice. It's strange that many seem to go hostile, instead of staying open and checking it out like a musician or anyone on the path.
The perma-smile on Taylor's face during his whole solo is arguably my favorite part of this video, dude had the serious Cedar Walton bounce on a bunch of those licks and he knew it
I've been binge listening to this for the past few days. I can't get over how beautiful Taylor's solo is on this. Honestly I think this is the best I've heard him playing on this song.
Thank you Mark as always!!! Gene Kruppa wrote the entertainer and as a musician and a drummer you have managed to succeed in bringing all of this together!!!!
I don't know what it is that you've done to me But it's caused me to act in such a crazy way Whatever it is that you do when you do what you're doing It's a feeling I wanna stay Time after time after time I try to fight it But your love is strong and keeps on holding on Resistance down when you're around pride's fading My condition I don't wanna be alone Cause my heart starts beating triple time With thoughts of loving you on my mind Can't figure out just what to do When the cause and cure is you Time after time after time I try to fight it But your love is strong and keeps on holding on Resistance down when you're around pride's fading My condition I don't wanna be alone Cause my heart starts beating triple time With thoughts of loving you on my mind Can't figure out just what to do When the cause and cure is you I get so weak in the knees I can hardly speak I lose all control and something takes over me In a daze it is so amazing it's not a phase I want you to stay with me by my side I swallow my pride your love is so sweet It knocks me right off of my feet
@Sans Elle, it's in 6/4, and they repeat a similar phrase every two measures. The hits lie on the downbeat, and after that the second 16th note of every beat in the first measure. In the second measure. The hits are on 1, the 2nd 16th note of 2, 4, and the 2nd 16th note of 5. It does some other weird stuff in the chorus, but that's the general idea of it, as far as I can tell
@beantown28 same here... first time i heard it my heart nearly skipped a beat. When I started hearing how simple the time signature really was it didn't wanna believe it :P.. Their execution is brilliant :D.
Gretchen's work helps to restore at least a modicum of faith in modern music in America despite the fact that Americans are largely too unsophisticated to truly appreciate it. Go 'head, GP.
So coming back to music: I think this piece is pure gold. I get dizzy trying to figure out all the metrics used here. Can someone actually give me the set of metrics in this song -after the drum solo of course ;) I fall for the piano on this piece. And actually I really can feel some Robert Glasper's spirit here. And also a little something of Bjork in Gretchen's singing.
I think the verse at least is in a really slow 6/4 (boom-click-boom-click-boom-click). You can really hear it on the "my heart starts beating triple time..." section.
you can actuallly figure it out but why? why would you do that instead of just enjoy listening to it? for sure mark didn't sit down and think about that berforehand or while playing ....
Chris Dave and Mark Guiliana are two of the best drummers out there (probably ever), definitely my two favourite. But Guiliana definitely isn't 'copying' Chris Dave. They both have unique styles. Don't confuse that with copying just cause Guiliana isn't playing gospel chops like 80% of the other up and coming drummers who ARE 'unashamedly copying' each other.
Clearly a lot of the comments r from those who don't knw music! Do your homework before u judge, she's doin it her own way not like the original clowns! It's Jazz the form of sound can go anywhere.
I agree that it would have been smart to make a separate video for the solo, but to say he is just playing around is very musically uninformed. The solo was probably a transitional piece between two songs but it represents its own piece and it is extremely well executed. He is telling a story with the drums. Notice how he presents a theme, expands on it, and then explores new themes, yet all the themes are interrelated. It is a wonderful solo.
I think I'd be fine with the drums, if the uploader had made a separate video titled "Gretchen Parlato @ Copenhagen Jazzfestival - Mark Guiliana Drum Solo". But I really feel that a lot of what the drummer is doing has nothing to do with the song "Weak" and is just him playing around.
Da faqqqqqq, man, how dare u, comparing them. mark guilliana is such an inspiration for chris and chris for mark. they both are high in skylevel. their styles are not the same either, chris will be always leaning to hipH wave .
Let's not get technical they are flat out good go Taylor I've watched the Harker Series, the man is a virtuoso, the band is very talented very very very!!!!!
@@fingazfunk you got good ears bro'. This is fantastic version that never gets old for me. Saw her live a few years back. Effortless voice. I just found out today in fact that she and one of my favorite drummers Mark Giuliani are married. Peace.
Pdrum Pdrum Yeah man, Glasper really hit the ball out of the park with this one. Two unique time signatures merged together. Stellar trio going nuts in the live performance. And Gretchen is flawless course. I imagine the live show you saw was amazing.
@@fingazfunk bro it was fantastic and like I said, her voice is effortless, she kinda has this whispery, vocal thing going on like there is no strain at all......hard to explain, but yeah she is phenomenal. Fantastic musicians too!......Peace.
Incredible, maddening accents tease the brain in this tune. Probably too progressive and idiosyncratic to be a hit, but really cool nonetheless. Wild & beautiful.
I think you need to give the drum solo another watch and pay more attention this time. I'm guessing you're not a drumme,r but the solo was hardly over-indulgent or just Mark showing how fast he cam play. He overlays rhythms, modulates meters, and uses unique hand to foot combinations to create new patterns of sound. He is being creative, not showing off. Plus, he played almost the entire solo between his bass, hi-hat, and snare, which takes discipline. That isn't what I would call over-indulgent
they are great drummers but Travis Barker...:D joking but Eric Harland, Mark Colenburg... are pretty good too. Everyone have own best drummer ;) you cant tell who is the best drummer in the world ;)
your prof pic is white, so idk who "we" refers to. Assuming you are black, I'd say that black people get all the love for jazz. Thats a good thing. That is deserved. When you think of jazz, you think of Miles, Trane, Parker, Monk, etc. Black. This is just a modern take on jazz, and its also great.
its jazz ....its about swing..live performances that sound just like the album a boring drivel.....improvisation my brother..if you heard her do the same song an hour later...it should have different qualities to it=jazz....
@@pgonzo98 listen hardo, I'm a drummer and I've played jazz for many years. The CrAzY thing is, not all jazz music HAS to be swung, can you believe that? Jazz is most certainly not "ABOUT swing" lol that's the most shallow "jazz" take i've ever heard. I had an opinion that I think that song has a better feel when its played not-swung, can I not have that opinion without being "incorrect." That is not improvisation either, brother, life is improv and you're gonna have to learn to be a little more flexible
Why tell people they should not be enjoying what they are actually enjoying? This is such a strange state of mind. Some might like the drummer, others might prefer the pianist, what is the big fuss here? It is a matter of outmost importance? Chill out, it's only music.
