I have a Jim Dandy. I got one when they first came out a few years back I was doing some shows out of state and needed a good guitar to travel with. Since then, it became my main touring guitar. I added a Lace pickup as well as an X brace for tonewood amp capabilities. After keeping a capo at the top for so long, the J is basically gone, so now it just says “I’m Dandy”

I got that guitar about 4 years ago, as a traveling guitar. I traded dozens of guitars all these years, but not the J.Dandy. this one is the only one that I will keep forever. It's a perfect sofa guitar, excellent for patio players like me. And it sounds just like the old blues records. When I meet serious players with 2k or 3k guitars, they "always" end playing the J.Dandy. there's something on that guitar. I am glad that you made this review.

Just picked up one of these and it has exceeded expectations. If you like 1940s blues you will love this guitar. It’s amazing how much bass tone comes out of such a small guitar. Plus overall sound, balance of tone and playability are lovely. A different sound to my other instruments. And it has a unique look too. Really good value for the price.

Had mine about 2 yrs now. The small parlor size and sound is uniquely suited to playing on the couch, at a campfire, or cruising down the street. Just don't expect it to sound like what it isn't. Stays in tune and has held up after daily use. It's a keeper that I don't worry about losing or damaging. That's it's number 1 benefit.

Great review Jack. I've owned one for a couple of years and your assessment is spot on. Mine also has low action, and has held up very well with no issues. Same here Greg. Mine was great straight out of the box once I'd put on my choice of strings, action just right for me, love the sound, and sits on a stand so it's always close at hand if I want to pick it up and play, which I do frequently.

I bought one of these in 2013. For the price, it’s excellent and has the vibe. I prefer the tone on this with old dead strings, tones down the high end and accentuates the thump of the small body. Yes! I have an aqua Gretsch Jim Dandy (I also have a Gretsch Country Gentleman...and a Gretsch Sho Bro)! It's a fun guitar. My Dad, who passed away forty years ago used to call these type of guitars "seed" guitars because back in the 1930s companies used to give you a guitar similar to this for selling packages of garden and flower seeds. The action and the intonation on the one that I have is right on the money right out of the box. Hard to believe on a guitar that is so inexpensive. Get yourself one! They're fun! Oh....and yes, the strings are a bit close together!

I love that guitar. I play a Framus kinda similar only with nylon strings. One thing you get with 12 fretters (for better or for worse) is that the soundhole is moved closer to the bidness end of things. At 1:17 that Spanish vibrato you can really hear the strings interact with the fretwire. I love that.

I got one maybe 3 years ago. Is there any solid wood? Doubt it. Does it sound great strummed with a pick? No. But put a set of soft strings on it (I prefer Martin Silk & Steel 11.5-47) and play fingerstyle. You'll be amazed, such a cheap guitar filling the room with what you're doing. Mine hangs right behind me in my office ready all the time, the way all guitars should live.

I have had a Jim Dandy for over 4 years. Well, the bridge does start to develop a belly bulge on the top, so, I am installing a tailpiece for it. It is also getting a single coil pickup in the sound hole. YES, well worth the work to keep it safe for the long run and the pickup will just make it a little more versatile. Of course, it is cheap enough to do what you want with it. Make it your own. That then becomes your own signature guitar among the many. And I would gig with it if I could gig.

No it doesn’t sound like a $3,000 Waterloo parlor or a Martin 000 but it has a place in my heart for just a fun to play guitar just about anywhere, mines been to the beach, camping, backyard hanging out with friends. 👍🏼 👍🏼 thanks for the review on this little blue machine.

Is's a smaller head, so the spacing isn't standard. I was able to meet my guitar guy at the guitar shop and they actually had one pack of tuners that would fit. I got lucky. I remember taking them home and realizing I would need to drill new holes and I brought it back because for some reason, me, guitars, and drills (or screws) just don't mix. I will screw it up every time. So, I had my tech drill the holes and he filled the old ones. I have the Jim Dandy. It's very much like my old Harmony Stella, except that my Stella had 60 year old wood, and is set up a lot better. If you want that old time parlor feel, the Jim Dandy really captures it. Besides, the way it's built, the darned thing is practically bulletproof. Seriously consider using light strings - try them anyway. That's what I started my Stella out on because I knew with the age, she was more delicate, but both guitars really sparkle with them. Thinking this winter I will tune the Jim Dandy in open D and mess around with that for a while.

I know from reading hundreds of guitar reviews that they are more likely to be positive than negative, and that's what I find when reading about this guitar, whether in this review and comments or elsewhere. I wanted to like parlor guitars because of their size, but for me the tone was a dealbreaker. I find the comparisons to an old Stella or a vintage Silvertone to be apt. Those guitars were among the cheapest of their day, and to me they sounded like it when I was a beginning guitarist back then. But if you are trying to buy a currently available guitar with a tone that is reminiscent of those, then this might be your guitar. If you are going to play delta blues, bluegrass or traditional country then the tone of this guitar may work for you. I played a Jim Dandy side by side a Recording King Dirty Thirties and the best description of the sound of both of these parlors is "boxy." I think it's largely due to the size of the guitar. There is an absence of brightness and resonance found in guitars a bit larger, such as orchestra size. I am not putting these guitars down so much as I am advising that you play one at your favorite music store, compare it to other guitars, and see if the tone is right for you. Otherwise, if you order one online without playing it you may come away disappointed.

I agree with you100%. I have one (the vintage white one, which looks yellow). I'm just not a fan. Very boxy sound. Looks great and has amazing sustain and does pick nicely, but I'm more of a strummer and it just doesn't do it for me.

I first tried to learn guitar aged 19 but its bulky size and boomy tone was a deal breaker. I just couldn't get the vintage bluesy tone I had in my head from listening to old recordings; eventually, out of frustration I quit. I read that those old time bluesmen used cheap parlor guitars but when I searched up and down Denmark street in the late 80's parlor guitars just weren't around anymore. I got shown up to a top floor showroom where they had a genuine 1936 relic (not relic'd!) but that was WELL beyond my budget! Today I'm grateful to have at last found a cheap ol blues guitar that delivers THAT sound and doesn't cost 5 figures!

Thank you. I am REALLY interested in this after hearing your comments about it's durability. How did playing praise and worship on the square go?

Hi I have a blood red oxen one I love the guitar one issue I had with it was the cheap machineheads go out of tune regularly so I changed them for a set of wilkinsons on the bar. The guitar is great now brilliant for bottleneck slide, song writing or going away for the weekend. It's a fun guitar to play I love the bass tones and treble highs . I think greatch are missing a trick by not selling this guitar with a quality set of machineheads.

You are missing out on a simple Inexpensive upgrade. Go to MGB guitars & get a pre wired piezo pickup. Cost about $5. Put it under the bridge. If you're picky add a volume. You will need to drill holes in your guitar, but it's a cheap alternative ☺️

I really get down on myself for not getting one of these when i had a chance, I remember one being listed at $199 at my local guitar shop like 5 years ago or something like that, I went with a Seagull instead. Worst decision ever. I'll have to pick one up in the future for sure.

How do you like that weird bridge? Also the basswood, is that a laminated product or is it solid wood?

Bought one of these in 2014 or so, my martins are usually in cases or the car since I gig 5 or 6 times a week, I've honestly used this thing pretty much exclusively when I'm at home since, it's kind of the perfect living room guitar, not too loud and it sounds good enough and plays incredibly well, more likely to learn a solo on this than even plug in an electric. I will say that after four years or so the tuners/nut/saddle were all completely wrecked, but I grabbed some cheap tuners and bone replacements and it's still kicking.

I’ve had the honeyburst one for years and I absolutely love it. The only downside is that my the plastic tuning pegs are starting to break and come off

I'm not sure how you recorded this, but it sounds fantastic to my ears. Like you can really hear the unique voice in the guitar. Sounds like a blues machine. Most demos the guitars all pretty much sound the same. Nice work.

Hi, great review! Could you please give your opinion on which guitars are most suitable for this guitar? Could you please give your opinion on which strings are most suitable for this guitar? You mention that you are using Elixir strings on the Jim Dandy, which strings? For the past years I have always restringed my acoustics with Elixir custom lights (11-52). Thanks in advance for your answer :-)

I’ve had mine for a few years now. I originally bought it as it is similar size to my Alligator resonator by Gretsch . But it is quieter so great for practicing in my flat. I play in open D and mainly slide/ finger picking . For me it’s a blues guitar.

Love mine. Id almost trade my 2500 taylor for ten of these. Really good for alternate tunings. And the intonation is fantastic.

What is your opinion about durability? Do you think this will hold up (structurally) over time? I saw one review indicating that it was fragile and would break easily. Thanks.

My ears tell me the sound of my "Ox Blood" is like a "chorus" tone(using PB's). A joy for Rag and Americana.

Thanks for the review. I'm shopping for a kicker acoustic, and then a classical down the road-so this is helping me shape my first decision. Also available in a sweet lookin' frontier stain from Sweetwater. And a few limited editions out there with Oxblood (hard to find) and Nocturne Blue (sorta hard to find.)
