Is it me, or does the G9221 sound a lot more like a regular acoustic, and less like a true "resonator" than the Gretsch "Honey Dipper"? Is it because of the "spider" bridge (Honey Dipper has the classic "biscuit" bridge). Or because the HD is brass while this is steel? I want the classic reso sound, delta blues style, but also the option to plug in. Gretsch doesn't seem to do that. Honey Dipper doesn't come electric/acoustic, and the G9221 doesn't sound come with the same hardware. What gives, Gretsch? If only we could put the two together.
I am sure you found an answer to your question by now but just in case- in my humble opinion, you are correct. The spider bridge sounds way different that anything. Play on-
+Doug Sawyer Good question re: the Honey Dipper. I'd like to know myself. From what I can tell from youtube, the Dipper has more of that old timey, delta blues, true resonator sound. That comes in part from the brass body and 'biscuit' cone (found in all those vintage resos). This one, the 9221, sounds great, but also seems to be missing some of that classic "bluesy" vibe. Could be because it's steel, not brass, and has the spider cone (used more in country/bluegrass), not a biscuit. But you do get the acoustic/electric options. Anyone out there who's actually played both and wants to compare the two models, I'd really like to hear about it.
