Hi I have this for my kitchen sink. Do you use any bacteria or enzymes product to help break down the food particles? And have you had any issues? Please let me know, thanks
My grandpa put cesspool about 100 feet from house (layer barn tin over)in about 20 years when it filled up moved about another 25 downstream and dug new hole and reused barn tin ,threw new dirt in old hole
yeah, you are right. it doesnt. I have a machine coming soon to dig it up and will have it dig about 40cm deeper than the barrel and 2x wide and long and fill it with big rocks and gravel.
What happens when it fills up with rotting bits of food that accumulate over time. This system is wrong for it's intended purpose. It should be built like a standard septic system with a drain field for the water that passes through. The rain barrel serving as the main containment unit that periodically must be pumped.
it does saturate sometimes but because I made a couple of mistakes. the main one being that i should have put down about 30cm of gravel under it maybe twice the width of the barrel. In theory you should measure the drainage rate of your soil when saturated so that you can then calculate how big the barrel or air gap needs to be.
you are correct! we had to re direct the washing machine away from it this winter when the ground was saturated with water because it wasnt draining fast enough... Luckily the washing machine was only a temporary thing and this is just going to be for the kitchen sink. It should be able to cope with that amount of water no problem.

This music is pleasantly annoying...is that possible? It hearkens to the old school arcade games & I must say it fits the project in a very weird way. Says something about your sense of humour. Certainly not the everyday RU-vid 'film score'. But if you were to re-upload this video with truly annoying music & add the word 'HACK' to the end of the title...nevermind have a nice day & thanks for the info & great video!
hahaha yes, who knows why i chose that music and as you say it is pleasantly annoying, expecially when its starts to get a little excited. thanks for your great comment, made me chuckle.
julian Baberze yeah, my soil gets pretty water logged in winter and it doesnt drain amazingly. I should have put gravel down as someone else has pointed out.
This is completely unacceptable for a Gray Water System, and grossly inadequate in terms of size. Typically, for a Kitchen Sink and/or Automatic Dishwasher you install a 300 to 500 gallon capacity drywell... that's Dry Well. A 55 gallon plastic drum is so small and undersized, it's not even funny, and it won't last long... maybe 2 or 3 years. Not to mention, you need lots of crushed stone or gravel for proper drainage of the gray water, usually 2 to 3 tons of stone.
I don't mind the music so much but the fundamental lack of respect for the earth bothers me. No grease trap and no real understanding as to how septic tanks actually work. I could also imagine the soil will either wash in or the barrel will collapse over time with the weight of soil. The one small meeting serface with the soil acts as grease trap, biological processing and for dispersion. As others have pointed out the meeting face in the tank will fill with food, grease, debris and soap forming a stinking bacterial scum barrier.
