It's incredible watching these dogs run and sprint, even walk. They have such beautiful grace and it's amazing how they're literally sailing throughout the air when they run, especially when they clock their top speed at 45 MPH.
Number 3 looks like one of my girls. We turned her loose in a field where she flushed out a rabbit and ran it down. Bunny hunkered down waiting to die. Our dog never had caught a bunny before. She just stared at it in confusion. Bun-bun hopped off slowly. Greyhounds are the product of 5,000 years of breeding. They are pursuit hunters. All of my hounds love people. Racing does not automatically equal cruelty.
I can totally appreciate that. I've had my grey for about a year and half now, and at first didn't really like they way they looked either. I now have a lot appreciation for their uniqueness and elegance, and I've got say...I've never had a dog that gets so much attention when he's out in public.
A greyhound has no undercoat and their skin is as thin as ours. A stray tooth or nipping as dogs like to do when excited can tear their thin skin. Once retired, it's common to see a group of them muzzled to play. They are actually very gentle, friendly, happy dogs... and once they retired, they are generally of the age that they are "laid back", tho they do get bursts of energy throughout the day (aka zoomies) where they will run around and play like a puppy... then sack back out sleeping.
My wonderful retired greyhound would catch me in a second then lean on me, they are the most gentle souls. Support greyhound rescue charities if you care ❤️
@@nataliemaclean9458 yes my Greyhound is the same she would run and catch me in the yard.and won't leave until she got her pat she just stops right in front of me she is dark Brown at night you can't see her if you go in the yard she would sneek up to you and stop in front of you like somebody put a tree stump in front of you.lovely dogs
My dads best mate used to work with trainers in Ireland and he said that he had to quit. He told me that when he started out, it was small-scale and ex-racers would be kept in the trainers family. But he said that now it's too commercialised and greyhounds just come off a production line. I don't know much about greyhound racing because its more for older people and I don't know anyone my age (20's) that's into it. But I trust his opinion because he's actually worked in it.
I can't believe the front legs/wrist bend like that (end footage). So thats what that extra pads for. I've two Retired Greyhounds. And had one before. They make brilliant pets. You need to give them time to settle in. Some, like my most recent one is still settling in after 2 years. He's now muzzle free and off lead where there's no cats. But some like my friends Grey only took a few weeks to settle in. I did know mine was going to be difficult, and its so rewarding seeing him change and grow
this is beautiul video i have a retired greyhound at home called bruce he is brown and he is 1 and a half years old his birthday is on christmas eve i love him so much
Greyhounds love a good race. While there are some owners that mistreat their dogs, the vast majority of licensed owners take excellent care of them for obvious reasons. If a dog is ill, malnourished or just in general bad shape, it won't win any races.
ive had 2 greyhounds for years now, great pets very intelegent and very very very loyal.both ex racers that we love very much and would recomend them to any one as a pet.
I work as a greyhound catcher and the place I work at there is a rule where no dog is to be put down... unless it is better for them like a broken neck... I have a retired racer and he’s beautiful he’s white, big, and gentle he was a great runner winning $46,000 over 18 months!!! His race name Fantastic Hulk and his sure was Black Magic Opal his Dan was Fantastic Barb!!!
Great video showing the speed, grace and amazing athleticism of this wonderful animal. Let me also say that the vast majority of greyhounds are treated well and loved by their owners and trainers. Can dsullivan52266 accept the fact that there are bad people in every sport but all of us genuine racing enthusiasts treat our dogs with love and care, we know that the greyhound is special and such a genuine and lovable dog breed.
bitterman co For sure! :) I appreciate these animals, and I have a strong interest in justice. They are kool! I remember my grandfather worked at a dog track in my hometown, when I was a kid... You sound like you are or were in the industry. As far as what you said above, is any of this actually happening? In other words, are there any ethical racetracks??
bitterman co That's neat. Glad to know the people fighting such an injustice. Thank you! I def want to look into adopting a greyhound one of these days.. Are they better like on a farm where they can run?
I ran out of characters in the last post, but i'd just like to add that he did say all the trainers he worked with were good people. But I think it would be better if they didnt breed so many, because then trainers could look after the dogs in retirement and there wouldn't be soooo many greyhounds in rescue centres!
Id love to find an ethical dog track business, one with owners who sign up there dogs, no killing. It is fun to watch and I know it could be done ethically if someone tried.
Do not believe all the lies spread by the anti racing ( unbeknown to them are actually being anti-greyhound) only on the rare occurrences is a dog put down, lots of pet owners dogs injure themselves badly and end up being put to sleep. The racing industry creates incredibly healthy pedigree dogs that us lucky mere mortals get to adopt at the end of their career. If you think its cruel go and visit a racing kennels.
I am a fan, these dogs are so amazing they love to run. A lot of people say they are exploited but they are doing what they love and that is to chase a rabbit. From 30 years of watching them today people actually care about these dogs and make sure they are not abused.
Some of you need to realize that greyhounds are some of the healthiest dogs, most greyhound racers are just average joes who sign up their dog for a couple of races and not professional kennel owners and the dogs love it. Most dogs injured aren't put down, they're sent to greyhound adoption agencies or bred if they are champions, and finally greyhounds are not turned to meat, that is idiotic, they would be too touch and flexed, same reason no one its fighting bulls or wild cats.
Look at them in just the fifth second of the video the greyhound was almost breaking his/her paw even seconds are cruel they break their (everything actually) legs tail even lose an eye and after the race they are REALLY tired Treated like shit by its owner open wounds that hurt when even walking this is cruel and we have to stop it And the worse is they are trained with live rabbits
Any and all dog sports, or sports in general, will have a risk for injury. I don't see you even glancing at lure coursing, the recreational version of racing despite it being almost exactly the same, just with turns added in and betting not being allowed. Compare the injury rate to dogs in agility competitions and you might just be surprised. Does that make agility dangerous? No, it just means that when dogs (and people) do something that involves movement, they bump up the risk of injury by a couple percentages. @@godillysillybilly6024
@@godillysillybilly6024 You are very wrong. That greyhound wasn't almost breaking his paw. That's how they run. Their paws flex so they can get the speed they need. Watch one running in slow motion. They don't lose their eyes or break their tails. That's so silly. And they are not tired after they race. They could keep racing again if they were allowed to. They only race for around 32 seconds. That is all. And NO, they are not trained with live rabbits. That has been illegal for many years, at least 25 yrs or more. They are trained with a stuffed bone, rabbit or dog. They get any wounds treated right away. There is a kennel Vet available all the time and a track Vet is at every race. Stop posting lies.
Jan Hald your right a troll wouldnt.I run coyotes with my grey's,three are retired racers i adopted...the rest we bought and payed for...and they run and fight like bloody fucking murder
dirtdobber blue I have a retired racing hound which I adopted, and a pig dog hunter and a labrador retriever. We don't have trolls in our household. Lucky you. LOL. My dogs don't fight because I'm the boss, not a troll like you :)
I have had a Border Collie, a Kelpie and a Koolie and a Greyhound each and every one of them was the best dog in the world and special in their own way
oh. my. god. Such beautiful creatures! Slow motion gives their running big credit as it is impossible to see how beautiful their motions are in realtime. I'm thinking of getting one to companion my Chinese Cresteds :D
I have 2 rescue Greyhounds and I love them to bits. I have Kitty's Secret whom only got to the trials & Robert's Vision. Robert suddenly refused to race although he had been winning. We renamed him Odin. We have had Kitty for around 18 months and Odin around 4 months. Odin is one big boy!
I have two as well, but I cannot call them rescued, because they weren't. They had good racing records, then the owner retired them. Both in incredible condition, healthy both psychically and mentally, no cowering, no sign of abuse. There was a time that they were treated badly, those days have passed, in the States anyway. I hear stories about abuse in other countries and I don't know if they are sadly true or not. I only know I have two retired athletes, and they are like my kids.
@@ThePunter29 did I say she "went through" anything bad? I was just trying to say that she had a life before we met her. read properly before you have a go at someone.
@@marshall4049 don't play stupid. Saying "but" followed by "now I see what she went through" is how those who speak English would begin to describe a negative situation.
That probably doesn't happen often. They enjoy racing. Many owners treat their greyhounds as partners, rather than property. They work together to win races.
It's apparent that you know little about Greyhounds. We have a retired racer, and they are FAR from being abused. Yes, in the past there were some bad people doing bad things to these dogs. However, nowadays, they are treated like athlete, given great food to eat, have air conditioned kennels, etc. They aren't forced to run, and if they aren't fast enough or get injured, they are adopted out, NOT euthanized. Please don't spread disinformation about these wonderful dogs.
I am really against racing the dogs, seen to many hurt on the track, and have dealt with the scarred and mentally wracked after their race is over. There is no doubt that the dogs love to run, a few of my greys beg to have the muzzle put on because it means they will race. I like this video. It has captured the spirit of the dog, no doubt the black is having fun. You would never have been able to see what this clip shows without the nice cam work. really nice job, a plus vid *****
Greyhounds have oversized lungs and hearts as well as extra large nostrils to take in more oxygen which helps them to run faster. They have been called the 45 mph couch potato and the canine version of the cheetah.
I'm sure your family looks after the greyhounds really well but that don't mean EVERY greyhound owner cares for their greyhounds. Actually I know someone who until recently, worked at the tracks and he said that SOME dogs weren't treated properly. I personally don't go to the tracks coz its for old people but I think they're gorgeous dogs. It's kind of naive of you to think you can speak for all trainers and owners when you only know the situation from your own perspective.
This made me cry. For a stupid reason too. Well for one I have 2 greys of my own. And two, you can just see the determination in their faces of getting the rabbit. They're never going to get the rabbit, and people are paying MONEY to watch those poor greyhounds run. Animal cruelty. :(((
Such a Beautiful animal to be wasted on a SICK sport. Blood money num1 priority...there is such thing as a JOB out there...instead of relying/exploiting an animals natural ability to make some quick an easy cash. Mankind's instinct to take advantage of an opportunity. I say put this sport on the cold steel table and put it to rest.
I dont understand people - A greyhound running is fine but put it on a track and its automatically creul? wise up , let greyhounds race and adopt or home after career !!!
Everyone arguing about track running. It is 50-70% of the time evil. Not all are, a lot of great ways to give a greyhound a home. Though its obvious that a lot are horrible places.
Lol you don't even get it do you! My original comment was pointing out that you were trying to speak for ALL trainers, I never said they were all bad. Bless you Spapoof- guess it doesn't matter though coz hardly anyone goes to the tracks now!
