CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Tarzan (Christopher Lambert) returns to his Grandfather's (Ralph Richardson) estate in Scotland.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes is a reverent retelling of the Edgar Rice Burroughs original, with a 1980s-sensibilities slant. Shipwrecked on the coast of Africa, Lord Jack Clayton (Paul Geoffrey) and his pregnant wife Lady Alice (Cheryl Campbell) attempt to survive in the hostile environment, but both die shortly after the birth of their son John. Abandoned in the wilderness, the orphaned John is adopted by a family of rather highly evolved apes, and raised as one of their own. Years later, John-now known as Tarzan, and now played by Christopher Lambert-comes across a party of white hunters. Rescuing one of the intruders, Belgian Captain Phillipe D'Arnot (Ian Holm) from a horrible death , Tarzan is taught to speak English by the grateful D'Arnot. Coming across the remains and possessions of Tarzan's parents, D'Arnot discovers that the Lord of the Jungle is actually the Earl of Greystoke. Brought back to England, Tarzan is introduced to society, where his crude, apelike manners offend everyone--except the likeable (and painfully senile) 6th Lord of Greystoke (Ralph Richardson, in his final film role) and Greystoke's American ward, Jane Porter (Andie McDowell, whose Southern-fried voice is dubbed by Glenn Close). Disturbed at the notion of Tarzan's inheriting Greystoke manner, his more greedy relatives begin plotting against him. But it is Tarzan himself who decides that he cannot adapt himself to England-especially after a painful reunion with his ape foster father, imprisoned in a science-lab cage.

Sometimes you see an old movie, made in the 70s or 80s and they age terribly. Bad acting, bad dialogue, bad music. This has aged like a fine wine. Its just perfect. Could have been made yesterday and you wouldn't have to change a thing. Well done, love this movie.

He had lost his son (his heir) and his daughter in law 20 years before, and when he was old and in the last days of his life his lost grandson and heir comes back home. Sir Ralph Richardson looks like the happiest man in te world and the music is just astonishing and fits perfectly with this haunting moment. This always makes me cry.

@@LGBTQ71 Yeah, the film was actually dedicated to him, I saw it in the credits the first time I watched the movie many years ago (before internet) and I remember asking to myself, who was this guy and what had happened to him. Later on time I finally found what was this all about. I also recognized him in the Four Feathers the classic Alexander Korda movie from 1939, when he was young.

It's one of those scenes where you get a buildup of expectation, no matter how short. When that "at a glance" sentence was thrown into the ring, the audience knows that in order for this movie to stay credible, the first moment of Christopher Lambert showing himself must become memorable. And he did not disappoint. Just one look, that was all that was needed.

Any man of any decency would be thrilled to have his lost Grandson returned to him. This man had lost his family and was surrounded by only friends and employees, but no close family. To have his Grandson would be the ultimate reward. I know for me it would be.

I saw this movie many years ago and I was initially not sure what to expect from it at the time. But if there's one thing the movie has that keeps everything together, is the late great Sir Ralph Richardson's performance. Richardson, who died before the movie's release, is truly the movie's centerpiece. When he's on the screen, there's a snap,a sparkle and an electricity, in every scene he is in. The scene where he meets his grandson for the first time, is mind blowingly emotional, particularly with the music's build up. Brilliant!!

The casting was perfect in this film. Aside from the fantastic Richard Richardson, and the incredible Christopher Lambert, they got Johnny's parents just right as he resembles his fathers dashing looks, but also his mother Alice's features which made this scene believable as the Earl shot down Sir Evelyn "If he's a Greystoke I'll know him at a glance" And yes it makes you cry.
