Grid (2019) Review - Is it worth a buy? 

Okay, that is a confusing title, dammit Codemasters. I was like, why the hell his he talking about a game that came out like 5 years ago? Grid Autosport, Grid 2, and now Grid... make perfect sense...

For the Damage Models point - it tends to be the car manufacturers decision how much they want their cars to be trashed. Obviously they only want to show minimal damage to their fancy cars and if the devs want that car in their game, they have to agree to it which is why the damage models are butt. Source: Am dev and thought it'd be an interesting titbit of info.

The bits that never made the review: It has no VR support which sucks and I did not test multiplayer as I loathe multiplayer in racing games, way too many dickheads out to ruin your experience. Also many people asking about my wheel and pedals, I do mention this in the review but for those that missed it I have a Thrustmaster T300RS

Reflections in the wing mirrors too, you don't get that in some non arcade racers.

Back from work, a cold IPA and a quick WAB, lovely.

Codemasters has always had the best racing AI bar-none. The race engineer, the nemesis system, the coded race events, this is all what I've been wanting since the original came out in 2008. It even looks fun with a wheel, which has never been true of the Grid series. I've moved away from arcade racers over the years, but I've gotta pay full price for this one. I need to encourage this kind of development.

To be honest, the first Grid was the most fun i ever had in a racing game, that and Colin Mcrea 3 or 4 and Dirt 1. I will give this a go just because its Grid, but i have a feeling it won't live up to the first one. It already looks and feels different from what i can see.

Grids always been a solid racer for me, grid autosport is my favourite, just loved how it played and the music was great too

First driving game I have played so far that with only 10 mins play, and one setting change that I could play with my wheel, everything else I have tried was so bloody difficult to set up..... alter the sensitivity just a tad and I was off and driving, so far so good :)))))) great review by the way :P

That Prost/Senna/Suzuka reference hit me right in the feels.

I'm probably the only person alive who loved Grid Autosports. I'm glad the reboot is really good. I might buy it when it's down in price though.

I played Grid Ultimate on XSX. Started with the Hypercar Season 3 and worked my way back to GT Season 2, Hatches Season 1 and Original Career. I finished the hypercar season, did many gt races and just a few hatches ones. Didn't do much of the original career, found the cars underwhelming. Alrhough I had fun overall, my problem is car handling can be treacherous around corners. Even in a straight line when breaking heavily, I had difficulties keeping some hypercars on the track, like the Koenigseg Jesko on a wet track in China, for example. Many corners feel like I have to fight against the slippery car. A small tap from another car will easily throw me off the track. Terrible car physics. It's a shame because the game looks great and feels super fast at 60 fps. The atmosphere is also good, kind of gritty. Some tracks look incredible with tons of eye candy. I will be trying the 2022 Legends soon. I really hope they've sorted out the lacklustre car handling around bends.

Really wish people would stop hating on the rewind feature. If you don't like it don't use it. It is there for those who want/need it. I appreciate the option to avoid last lap spinout frustration and things happen sometimes.

Best car racing game review I've ever watched .....and I've watched a few !! Nice to watch someone who actually knows how to play a racing game so can accurately review it properly i.e. covering every aspect that you need to know. Great accent only helps me give it (and the game) 10/10 ................and 'Worth A Buy' you should consider taking up driving professionally judging by your driving expertise in this review footage !!

If you can't use your pedals with your wheel, you can configure the wheel's paddles as throttle and brake, this is what I do as I can't use peddles without crippling pain in my legs due to spinal stenosis

I thought Grid was an old game from 2008. I had no idea a new Grid was out.

How was your experience using the wheel? I have a thrustmaster t300, but I’m still debating on buying this. The lack of tracks really turns me off

Had some fantastic races in this game against the ai on hard difficulty.

I'm getting bored with F1 2019 but this looks fun.. I know you reviewed the PC version but is the PS4 version good also?

Macketh mate we need to know does it have VR support? You know as well as anyone how much immersitivititus you get playing a racing game in VR with wheel and pedals.

I don't mind the preferred driving line on an arcade racer but I also turn off all assist & that Godforsaken rewind cheat feature.

I dont know sh't about racing games, but the circuits are really well done. I recognized each country in a matter of minutes. That tells something of the attention to detail.

Mack if you want a game with a truly insane sense of speed, isle of man tt, going round the photo realistic track dodging bus stops and lamp posts, everyone needs to experience that. Get it on offer and play it once just for the experience. The speeds you get on uk roads are incredible.

Great review, Mack. I'd been wondering about Grid since I saw it on the release schedules. You'd have made my mind up had it been a little cheaper - say £30-35. I enjoy racers, but not £45 enjoy sadly. They're a side passion for me in gaming, so not sure I'd personally get enough out of it for £45. I'll spend my money on the other big titles upcoming for now and save Grid for a later date.

The first and only game I pre-order and it is a good one. Loved the Grid series, especially the first one. Maybe it's worth a Retro review. It has been removed from the Steam store year ago but there are a few keys over at G2A

Play this game at least in Hard. Other then that, this game is tremendous fun, good arcade and simulation blending. The cars feel really good driving.

The original grid was a great game that I could sit back and play with a controller. Some sims are so hard core you actually need a racing wheel to compete its nice to have games like this where you can just race and not theory craft an hour straight before playing.

Mine should be coming today. I hope the damage model will improve over updates though. That's something I remember being excellent in the first one.

I have the original Grid on Steam and have a total of about 152 hours into it. I loved it! I'm glad Codemasters decided to keep the franchise alive and push out a newer version. It's the perfect time too because so many people have full on racing wheel setups. No doubt pulling the trigger on this. Getting tired of Division 2 anyway. Good vid, mate!

The Deluxe Edition is part of the humble bundle this month and I'm cheered up Mack likes it!

Mack Do you have a high refresh rate monitor because you have a 2080 id be playing in 120hz or 144hz minimum, it does make a difference to 60hz

Looks interest ing but only 12-13 tracks? I wonder if they plan to update it with more further down the line?

Do a video Mack on which TV or monitor to get for over 60 hz 50 hz please! It says I'm getting 84fps on iracing everything on max settings but my tv is 60hz I know theres 144hz monitors but I wanted a bigger screen , more the 27 inches

Codemasters jumped on that microtransaction train hard. Id stay away.

Grid brought me back to Racing Games ( The Original)

Great review mate. I feel like other reviewers focused way to much on career/progression. I feel like this game is more about pure racing and fun. I am having a blast with the game but it’s not a game I will play for hours a day. I’ll start up once in a while to get my adrenaline fix

Great to see how this 2019 version stacks up to the 2009 version. The original is a gem, and it almost runs on a potato it's so well optimised. It's aged very well fair play, so I'd guess that this one will too. The sense of speed is bloody amazing, especially in the tighter circuits. Nice review.

What do these modern games do different? It's like Granturismo 2 but better graphics, I don't know what modern racing games do now, I'm asking because I always skip out on racing games even thought I used to love them

Great review Mack again! :), I have bought it but it transpires that the retail version only has dx12 option whereas review copy (and pirated version!!) has dx11 and work better than retail version! this is affecting a lot of people who cant play the game, people who bought the game legit.. if you google search 'Access violation at address 0xce4a9b65 in module 'Grid_dx12.exe' + 0x7b9b65. Grid_dx12.exe' theres a ton of people with this problem.. I dont see why codemasters have done that! :(

Mack, I would *really* like to hear your opinion on Gran Turismo Sport. I know it's not a new game but it's the biggest name in car games and I know how much you like them.

This almost looks like a remaster of the og grid. I miss the freestyle drifting online on that one..

Loved the first Grid and drove for Team BEER Racing (RIP P.J. you would have loved this) good to see some of the original track back as well, really looking forward to playing this.

You didn't say how it compares to the other grid games. How does it feel compared to the original? More/less features and tracks? Did they remove drift events? What about online? Destruction derby?

I would buy it, based on your review, it's just that when I dropped £60 on dirt rally 2, I was expecting to get a full game instead of half a game.

Hi Mack, thanks for this review, as I was really excited for this but didn't want to buy it too early in case it was shit, now I know it isn't. Also, Codemasters have said there will be more tracks as free DLC down the line, so the tracks issue should get fixed.

what wheel do this reviewer use? just recent bought a thrustmaster wheel myself, but finding myself not playing much cause I dont get the feel of speed. 200mph feels like 30 :/

Music score is a bit low, why? Is it not good or... Well, I think this will be the first game I buy for Stadia. Let's see if this will run at 4k with HDR.

Great review Mack. Historically I don't care for arcade racers either but you're making me want to check this one out. Also I thoroughly agree with the rewind systems in a racing game they're nonsense.

Grid series is one of the best racing games of the last 20 years. If you don't play grid you can't understand what incredible game is.

Played it today, the throttle has little power. Once I touch it its all the way in red. I am using a thrustmaster tmx pro wheel and manual clutch. It is very arcadish!
