One thing that helped me when our dog passed (in a similar way, on his own terms), was that he only knew love since he joined our family and he didn’t know his life was cut short. He just knew love. People want to get rid of grief because they see it as hanging on to loss, but really it is about holding tight to love - which is why we always feel it. Run free, Pukashell. ❤️🌈

I have found grieving for a beloved pet is so consuming because their love is so pure and doesn't come with the complications that human relationships have that make grieving so difficult. But it's also what makes our relationship with them so important. Wishing you love and support at this time. ❤

Also while sometimes you have a relative living with you pass away, statistically more often than not it’s someone that you don’t see every day or live with. Meanwhile a pet is always supposed to be there. You walk in to your house, they come to greet you, you can no longer smell or hear them, they have toys that aren’t getting played with anymore, your chores that revolves around them are no longer needed. It is like if you were a caretaker for someone and that person has passed away. Just as strong and devastating.

I lost my furbaby after having her 16.5 years as bad as it sounds that’s the toughest loss I’ve ever experienced and I’ve lost a lot of people. She passed 2 years ago and I just recently got a new puppy. It’s so tough. I’m sure our love will grow but right now it’s still so hard and that bond isn’t fully there. I know if Darby would’ve been my first furbaby I’d love him so so much already, but Punkin was my first, my best friend, and he’s nowhere near her. I’ve been unable to work since 2010 so she was with me everyday, all day. She really lit up the room, and all our family loved her so deeply. 🌈🌉💔🐶❤️

Every minute of 12 years were spent with my little 2.6 pound yorkie, Teaka. I was shocked when she died suddenly and unexpectantly exactly 48 hours before my husband also died unexpectantly. The grief was unbearable. I went through a very dark time, but after a year, God brought me out of it with his comfort. God bless you Tati and James.

I'm so sorry. Pet loss grief is so deep. I lost my soul dog last May and still find waves of grief hit me. Be gentle on yourselves. Grief is not linear.

I can’t stand when people take pets passing so lightly and say things like “it’s just a dog” but no it’s not just a dog. That’s your family. It’s like taking care of a Baby. I hesitated watching to press play on this video because I just lost my sweet girl Gemma (profile pic) 6 weeks ago and have only just started coming out of the pit of that depression. My furbaby that passed is in my photo. I told my husband if you hear me crying I’m watching RU-vid and I’m watching Tati who lost her furbaby Puka and I’ve been watching her for 10 years. He handed me a tissue and rolled over to go to sleep. We got her right after highschool, moved in together while in highschool and she passed at 16.5 years me and my husband both was so afraid our relationship was gonna change because we loved her so much and our world revolved around her. I imagine it’s how a couple becomes when a child graduates and moves off.

I'm a vet tech so i deal with animal loss daily - but it still threw me for a loop how hard I was hit with the loss of my own dog. They are truly the one thing in the world that loves unconditionally. A lot of times they're the one constant in a life that is unpredictable. There is nothing you could do that your pet will turn their back on you. And he trusted you both enough to choose to spend his last moments in your arms. That's so beautiful! I think when a pet connects to someone who has passed that makes them even more special to us - Puka's connection to James's mom made him almost an extension of her. I'm so glad you got to experience Puka and Puka got to experience you two. He knew nothing but love in his life. Thinking of both of you

In our 4th year of marriage, I lost my cat of 14 years suddenly in my arms (heart attack), and within the month we also lost my husbands chihuahua of 7 years. The grief of losing half of our family back to back in so short a time was intense. Pets provide a very special kind of love and comfort.

The loss of a pet is such a unique loss. All they want from us is love and time. They are judgment free, and they give us the purest love of all. When they leave us, it is a grief that just can't be explained unless you have been a Kahu (Hawaiian for your pet's guardian, protector. Never an owner). I love the quote you shared about having a close relationship with sadness. With depression you feel hopeless, like nothing you do will help and there's no point. I know because I've suffered with it for so long, and am currently in a period of strength and recovery. I do also know that depression is not always permanent, it is a different experience for everyone and can come and go many times. From what you share, it seems like you intentionally try to be hopeful, even when things are going wrong and that IS inspiring! I know people always say that, it can almost feel cliche sometimes, but it really truly is inspiring. Thank you for being vulnerable and sharing your self and emotions, it inspires hope in others, too. I miss my dog Pablo, too. May Puka rest in peace 💖

I'm so sorry you and James are going through this. We lost our beautiful dog Buddy in August in very similar circumstances. I can relate so much to everything you said. Buddy is buried under an apple tree in our back garden because he loved sniffing around among the trees and would sometimes eat the windfalls. We both regularly spend time with him there and it helps but there's a huge void in our lives now. To you and James I would say it does get easier with time just as it does when you lose a person. Take the time to grieve and keep telling each other the funny stories about Puka. We have found that smiling and crying together has helped us. My thoughts are with you both.

Losing a pet is much harder than some people realize. I lost my dog Sparkles the day after Thanksgiving in 2022. I was crushed when I saw a picture of my dog not alive in her bed. The days leading up to it were rough because she basically shut down and was not going to live much longer. I knew in high school that she was going to not be alive by the time I graduated college. When it actually happened it was my very first loss in my immediate family. I'm sending my prayers and love to you through this because it reminded me of how my dog's passing really changed me and still makes me cry every now and again. It will get better and know Puka is always with you.

There are few words that I can compose to say how deeply sorry I am for you both. They say time heals all wounds… it’s been four months and I still cry everyday. I can’t even bring myself to touch his toys, treats, or his “house” the most gut wrenching experience. All my love to you both. Thank you for sharing little Puka with us for all these years. Hugs ❤

Not long before I unexpectedly lost my beloved dog I had read the book “signs” by Laura Lynn Jackson and she had a whole part dedicated to pets. I’m so grateful I had read it, because I was instantly able to see the signs he was sending and it was so helpful during the grieving process. They truly don’t leave us, they are just in a different form ❤ So sorry for your loss.

I hope you read this: My deceased parent’s dog passed away last summer. I took her to live with me when my mom passed. My parents passed in the same year. Sophie saved me. She was the last piece left I had of them. My heart broke all over again when Sophie passed away. I did get some relief knowing she was back with her Mommy and Daddy in heaven. The pain doesn’t fully go away but it is a reminder that they lived their lives to the absolute fullest and completed all that they had to on our earth. Losing a pet hits in just a different way. i think that the worst part of losing a pet is just being around the house and seeing the spots they used to sleep/play/etc. my dog passed in 2019 only a week after my birthday and it shattered me... he was my only friend in a household that made me feel so lonely growing up... he was such a good dog, i still miss him a lot.

Pets are everything. They are our best friend, our children, the love of our lives. They are apart of all of our key moments in life both good and bad. They love us truly unconditionally. The loss of a pet is unique in that way. I’m so sorry for your loss Tati and James. How lucky he was to have your love and you to have his memories. Blessings to you as you heal the loss of Puka.

My dog passed a few years ago and I still catch myself feeling sad that he's gone. I saw something once about how grief never gets smaller but your heart gets bigger so that it doesn't feel as heavy.

I tried to watch this several times before I was finally able to watch it today. Every time I started the video and heard the music, I started to cry. Losing a pet is one of the absolute worst types of grief. Praying for peace and comfort for you and James during this difficult time 💖

Oh man, seeing this brought me to tears. My furbaby Scoot Scoot passed several years ago but seeing photos of him still can be gut wrenching, I love him so much

Some people truly don't understand how people can love an animal so much. I completely understand your sadness. We have a cat and he is another family member. He is my husbands best friend and all of us adore him so much. He is like a dog, but is an orange tabby. When he passes we will be beyond devasted. I so sorry for your loss ❤😢

Pet grief is a different beast. Even just thinking about my precious Shih Tzu passing brings me to tears. My sister recently went through her dog passing that she had had for so many years through everything from poverty to abusive relationships, and even though I wasn’t particularly fond of the dog I cried so hard.

I didn’t know how much emotional support my dog gave me until he was gone. Even after a year the grief was overwhelming I couldn’t watch commercials on the television with dogs that he would flip out over and try to get the dog in the tv! My heart literally hurt to beat for months. I finally broke down and got a dog a year later to fill the void. It’s so strange but also a blessing that this new dog does things just like my Chai Chai. So sweet and so warming!

Thank you for sharing Puka with us over the years! I have enjoyed the videos of him and learning about his personality! I'm so sorry for your loss. My in-laws dog, and my cat got me through the loss of my husband. A little over a year later a couple months apart, they had to be put to sleep because they had different cancers. That was so, so hard! Sending all the love and hugs your way. That quote you shared, "You're not depressed. You have an intimate relationship with sadness." I felt that. I have lost so many people and beloved pets in my life, and I'm not depressed. However I do feel sad and still deal with waves a grief to different degrees, and that phrase fits so well.
