Grieg - Lyric Pieces (complete)

Short, lyric character pieces were very much in vogue in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, especially so in Scandinavia. Edvard Grieg was an undisputed master of the genre, and his ten books of Lyric Pieces, with a total of 66 items, span the better part of his composing career. More at home in smaller forms than in large formal structures, composing these pieces came natural to Grieg, to the extent that he half-jokingly complained in a letter to his close friend, the Dutch composer Julius Röntgen : "... I have been lyric once again. Can't you please cure me of this affliction ?".
With some exceptions, the Lyric Pieces are of small scale and modest ambition, which has ensured them a prominent place in every amateur pianists' repertoire. Yet, their ever-fresh inspiration, distinct Nordic flavour, and occasional flashes of virtuosity offer great opportunities for the enterprising concert pianist.
I recorded this complete set in march-may 2016, and took off the 4 separate videos for Books I - IV which I had already uploaded here. It supersedes my earlier set from 2007 on pianosociety.com (the mp3's there have been updated, too). I hope these can be enjoyed, there's probably not another another single-video Lyric Pieces complete set on YT.

Grieg is my favorite composer. His music is so expressive of different moods. I don't need to see a picture. What is in my thoughts is better than any painting or movie.

A "tour de force", really... When I was in Denmark, my father asked me to try to get the integral of the Lyric pieces of Grieg... almost 20 years ago, time passed, my father died, but my promise to at least hear this masterpiece remained. Today I feel lucky ending this 20 yrs search. Thank you so much, and compliments. You are a great pianist. Respectfully. GK.

@ChrisBreemer
@ChrisBreemer 6 лет назад
Thanks and you're welcome ! Good luck with the concerto. I used to play through it long ago, it works quite well in the solo version. While it's not the most difficult of romantic concertos, it is certainly not to be sniffed at. I always found some passages very tricky.
@fymathRUS
@fymathRUS 6 лет назад
Chris Breemer totally agree with you. The Coda of the 3rd movement is a really technical demanding passage. However it is not as brilliant as the rest of romantic concertos, so it is much more intimistic and introspective piece, what I think is the really essence of Grieg's music. (Sorry for my English).
@ChrisBreemer
@ChrisBreemer 6 лет назад
Nothing wrong with your English ! Grieg's piano writing is intimate by nature, but can occasionally be brutally demanding (e.g. the Ballade and the last Halling from the Lyric Pieces).

Great recording and interpretation, Chris! Congratulations!! Just out of curiosity, what gear did you use (mics - brand and model - and recorder), and how were they phisically disposed in relation to the piano and the room itself? Was there any kind of post-processing? Thanks in advance!
@ChrisBreemer
@ChrisBreemer 5 лет назад
Thank you João ! I use a Tascam DR-2 portable WAV recorder with its built-in microphones. The sound quality of these mics is very decent but of course they are not as sensitive as dynamic or condenser microphones. If I had a better instrument, and could play better, I would probably invest in a pair of good microphones. Although it's a hassle, a portable WAV recorder is very handy. Yes I do post-processing, for two purposes : 1) cutting out errors or blemishes. and 2) to add some reverb so it sounds more like a real concert hall recording. The recorder is located about half a meter beyond the far end of the grand. Though these days I put it on a tripod close to the inward curve, which seems to be the usual position.

I'm so happy I found this! What a joy to listen to! However, I was looking for a piano piece from Grieg that I thought was one of his lyric pieces but it's not here. I think the key is E-minor and the German title is "Auf den Bergen" (=on the mountains) - it has nothing to do with Evening in the mountains. It's incredibly hard to find a recording of it, which is weird because it's very catchy. In the beginning both hands play the main theme which builds up to total epicness! Can anybody help?

Just letting you know, many of the timestamps in the description are wrong. Amazing video nonetheless!

Indeed, I see it's a bit of a mess in places ! I'll clear it up. Thanks for the comment !

I've corrected all the wrong timestamps ! There were about 5 or 6. Thanks again for reporting it, I wish more people would to that. I also spotted one wrong title (on "Shepherd's Boy") but I'd need to recreate and re-upload the video for that. Too much hassle.

@@ChrisBreemer Thank you! This video is extremely useful as I am writing an essay on the Lyric Pieces and yours is the only complete/accurate performance I have found.

@@user-td4do3op2d You're welcome ! I don't know about accurate (it's probably not always), but it is certainly complete :)

What kind of piano are you using? A Kimball?
@ChrisBreemer

It's a Gabriel Gaveau about 100 years old, but with new hammers and strings. See one of my other videos (e.g. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8iHsWzi6kbI.html) for a look.

darn I wish this was more spontaneous so there is room for deeper interpretation

Yes it could be more spontaneous. And yes there is room for deeper interpretation, whatever that is. But do you kind of equate the two ? Personally I don't mistake spontaneity for depth. Only the very greatest can combine the two. I'm alas not one of them.

@@ChrisBreemer Nothing related to the music. It was meant to be a pun.

Wat een werk...alle lyrische Stucke...Hulde....I don't want to be rude, but your skill deserves a better grand piano. Your grand is a bit out of of tune and a bit harsh. And try some more emotion...a little bit more rock & roll. That's what Grieg meant and what is Norway all about.
@ChrisBreemer

Yes, a better grand, that would be nice. I wish I could afford it (and had the space for it). As things stand, the Gaveau will have to do. Its sound is not to everyone's taste and it does go out of tune more easily than a Yamaha or Steinway. As for rock and roll, I think I'll pass on that - even though I do like the Stones ;-)
