Peer Gynt, the son of a peasant, is a young man of twenty years old and full of ambition. He lives poorly with his mother Åse. In the village, the wedding of the young and attractive Ingrid is celebrated to the sound of violins. Act 2. On the wedding day, Peer Gynt kidnaps Ingrid and runs away with her into the woods. But very quickly, he gets tired of her and ends up abandoning her. Fleeing his native village, he meets one of the daughters of the king of the mountain, who leads him into the world of the trolls. When he realizes that he must renounce his human condition if he wants to marry her, Peer Gynt runs away again. Act 3. The young man finds refuge and comfort with the gentle Solveig, but eventually renounces his love. After returning to his mother, Åse, and witnessing her death, he leaves Norway. Act 4. Twenty years have passed. Peer Gynt has failed in the East, where he has become a rich slave trader. After losing his fortune in the sinking of one of his ships, he is welcomed as a prophet in a tribe of desert Bedouins, stripped of his last possessions by the beautiful Anitra who has become his mistress, and ends up "emperor of the mad" in an asylum in Cairo. Act 5. Many years have passed, and it is an old man who now returns to Norway. There, Peer Gynt finds Solveig, faded by the years, who has never stopped waiting for him. As the old man exhales in his arms, Solveig consoles him by announcing that he has finally completed his journey and found the meaning of his life. He dies like a child cradled in his arms, symbols of redemptive love. Edvard Grieg PLAYLIST (reference recordings) : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_IJO2TaXAI0.html
Grieg is to Norway what Sibelius is to Finland, Nielsen to Denmark, Elgar to England,Janacek to Czechoslavakia, Villa Lobos to Brazil. Enescu to Romania....and many more truly nationalistic composers. The whole story of Peer Gynt is amazing . This is a great Beecham performance.
@Lidia Magdalina I am not a professional musician but i inherited a love of music from my father. Ive been collecting recordings and attending concerts since i was 10 yrs old......61 yrs ago.
BTW Enescu was mentor to Yehudi Menuhin who when in Romania was fascinated by the gipsy music however Enescu wouldn’t allow him to play or appreciate it just the classics Bach etc . Later in Yehudi’s life he got the chance to gig with Stephan Grapelli he of the hot club de Paris .
All these years listening to The Peer Gynt Suite, and never knew there was a vocal chorus. Thankye for this, memorable and stimulating. A pleasure. Cheers
Ilse Hollweg is fantastic in Solveig’s Song. One forgets what a phenomenal colorist and orchestrator Grieg was. And all that ‘Orientalist’ melodic treatment (The East).
Grieg was a genius. I got up in the morning to grieg's morning and now I am feeling all roused up. Thanks @Classical Music/ /Reference Recording The wedding march is amazing! Why dont I see it with the first suite always?
Wie wunderbar. Mache die letzten Arbeiten im Garten und alle sind hier. Die Feen, Elfen Zwerge und Lichtwesen. Danke. Zu viel Werbung... schämt euch...habt doch mehr Achtung vor der Natur....
I had forgotten how marvellous the complete incidental music is. Wonderful orchestral colours. It must have been amazing to see Peer Gynt in the theatre, what a spectacle it must be.
This Beecham recording is still selections from the score; this is about as complete a recording as you'll find: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YIk5oxSnrIw.html
Love this!! I want to use this for my toddler music class! Is there a way you could add one more second to the end so we can hear the very last notes for a few more seconds? Thanks for sharing your talent!
Agreed, he had no time for so-called musicologists he just enjoyed conducting wonderful music in his incredibly talented way. Fortunately we do have some very good conductors now but I guess none with his personality. Wonderful playing from the Royal Philharmonic orchestra.
This is quite different from the Karajan or the Ormandy version. I do not know which of all is the closer to what the composer wanted the public to hear, but I like much better the Karajan version.
A drop of dissonance: The glorious music of "morning" sounds at the time when Per is crossing the Sahara Desert. Which is also bedazzling, though shorter. Grieg and Ibsen were friends.
Morning….. the colors on the mountains and meadows immediately before sunrise with the crescendo at the moment the sun breaks the horizon, then again as the bottom edge breaks the horizon, all of the plants, animals, birds and fish responding to a new day with the end of song being the visual of a flock of birds flying in formation across the sky. When I enter the afterlife, I hope Grieg is conducting God’s huge orchestra comprised of all 12 Tribes of my Israelite kinsmen as my welcome (with Handel immediately following). I will fall on my face in awe.
