No one can match Gould's playing or his interpretation of opus 7. Nearly drove off a dark highway driving through the Catskills while hearing Gould play this. How tragic to lose him at 50.
Grieg, wrote Gould, "was a cousin of my maternal great-grandfather." Bazzana, pg 30. So yes, a distant relation. Also distantly related to the Clan Gregor outlaw Rob Roy.
I’m sure Grieg woukd love it. When I heard Glenn’s grandfather’s cousin was Grieg, I really thought this had somehing to do with the performance, perhaps why Glenn decided to record this in the first place. I don’t know…
@@pianosbloxworld4460 That's probably true. I read that Glenn looked into all of Grieg's piano music and wasn't very interested despite their connection. But then there's this.
An outstanding rendition, the best recording of Grieg op 7. Tempos are simply perfect.. Gould is the only to respect the “allegro moderato” indication at the head of the first movement, while all the other pianists take it faster, without touching the real meaning and expressiveness of this music
First time i heard this sonata, instantly look for the score on the internet(IMSLP) . Heard others pianist...3 seconds into their playing and the first thing i asked myself was : Where the F@#K is the "Moderato" why everyone else rushes this piece :/ Maybe i don't understand "Allegro moderato"...
duuuuddeeee! idk what is with people --- this is the only decently paced recording i've heard!!! Everyone else just saw "allegro" and jumped out the gate
Noone can save the Greig Ballade or this Sonata . If it was given material to orchestra and a soloist added to it would make a better impression ! Godowsky thought the Greig Ballade special . He should know but t has not and will not become a repertory item though it has a lot of charm it does it in such a salon or even honky-tonk I'm from the Norwegian countryside . It lacks nobility though Gould invests its slow passages with high affection and style. I feel it growing on me as I've listened to it twice now. This Sonata tells a ballade like story it's not Sonata even though the form is .
I think Gould took the fact that this is in a minor key and tried to make it sound as if it was very sad!! The minuet, in particular, sounds like he is playing it in slow-motion, rather like he would play it if he had the music in front of him for the first time and was making sure he was playing every not meticulously correct!!! Stick to Bach.
People who say this is a bad interpretation, should just go back and put your headphones back on and smoke another joint and pop on another Van Halen or Black Sabbath album. Those would be more up your alley? This is an original interpretation. All versions of anything are interpretations.
