On this episode of Grilling JR, listen as JR and Conrad revisit Backlash 2001, which took place on April 29, 2001, at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Il. In it, we'd see a "winner take all" main event tag team match featuring WWF Champion "Stone Cold" Steve Austin and Intercontinental Champion HHH taking on the WWF Tag Team Champions, The Brothers of Destruction, Undertaker, and Kane. Plus, Shane McMahon vs. Big Show in a Last Man Standing match, Chris Benoit vs. Kurt Angle in an Ultimate Submission match, and much more!

2001 started off red hot but after X-7 it gradually spiraled into a clusterfuck. Austin's heel turn left him with no strong face opposition with Foley retired, Rock leaving to film a movie & Hunter refusing to turn face. The Two Man Power Trip...although something fresh & unexpected...made zero sense. Then when Hunter got laid up with the quad injury it left Austin feuding with Jericho & Benoit. His match with Angle at Summerslam was boss though, loved every minute of it. Don't get me started on that god-awful invasion angle

Man I'm only 35min into this episode and I'm so tired of Jrs negativity. He gets side tracked way to easy then always talking bout offending websites and ppl for not naming the greats, ect ect. Grilling Jr has become terrible I'm not even sure if I'm going to be able to finish this episode and I loved this ppv

@@thewiseguy3690 I tend to agree. I am about 45 mins in and it is worse than usual. It is the same every week, usually I just get on with it but it is effectively the same deal. There is no reason to go on a hypothetical defensive rant after saying Austin is the biggest babyface ever, it is hardly a controversial take. Doesn't help that they discussing Austins heel turn again which has been done several times over the last few weeks on Conrads podcasts. Will continue the listen on my commute tomorrow though!!

Triple H really should've been more like Scott Hall in regard to losing. Dude was bulletproof and the fans are smart. It wasn't even a clean win for Jeff. Don't be such a mark.

I blame Triple H for the Austin failed heel run, because he was supposed to turn face the night after Mania. What a feud that would have been with Triple H as a face. All you really had was the Undertaker and Kurt Angle after that, and he had some amazing matches with Kurt Angle.
@phantomsidious2934
@phantomsidious2934 3 года назад
Triple h knew that he probably wasn't going to beat Austin for the title so he thought I'm not losing to Austin over and over again, I'll just join him instead and ride his coattails, and that's what he did, if you can't beat them join them

I really did hate Triple H back then and I remember being pissed off when he became a grand slam champion when he won the tag belts with Stone Cold. I do think Triple H deserves to be a grand slam champion now seeing the hard work he puts in the ring but as a 12 year old back then, I didn’t fully understand the wrestling world.

That backlash butyrate is mainly on Austin making his first appearance in months at backlash 2000 imo. The card didn't seem as strong as 2000 either so that's part, but that butyrate for 2000 was higher than the average for the time for a 'b show'

Every time this era gets brought up people say that Triple H should’ve turned face and faught heel Austin. That would’ve been so much worse. Austin v Triple H had been done to death at this point, they’d basically been having PPV matches against eachother since 1999 - even if Austin was out for 9 months of that period. Plus we’d just spent like 6 months establishing that Triple H organised a hit-and-run on Austin. We’re gonna cheer Triple H over Austin now because Steve hit The Rock with a chair?

What's really shitty about this *PPV's* booking is that it set up Raw 8 days later (Jericho beats Regal in a cage, Dudleys beat X-Factor in a 6-man tables match) and Judgment Day 3 weeks later (Austin/Taker for the WWF title, HHH and Kane for the IC title in singles).

I always wondered what was going on with the camera missing the finish here in the Main Event. As mentioned, they did something similar on a Raw, and then it happened again when Austin fought Taker at Judgment Day. Made me wonder if they were trying something new.

It's hobsons choice at this point but hhh turning face the night after mania & feuding with austin was the least worst option once you've gone down the rabbit hole of turning austin heel. The stalemate finish at No Way Out set it up a perfectly as well.
@stevepmg9202
@stevepmg9202 2 года назад
They were trying to put it off and do a slow burn so they could have the big match at SummerSlam. Austin accidentally cost HHH the Intercontinental title at Judgment Day, HHH screwed up and cost them the tag belts the night after, the next SmackDown was supposed to be all about the fallout and dissent but Hunter's injury ruined it prompting a rewrite that ended up with TLC3.

Anyone notice JR flip-flopped on Austin's heel change here? He said in the past that it was creative or someone in creative and that they were doing it as a "change for changes sake" thing; in more than one episode. Also, yes JR, conrad has mentioned to you and the rest of us a dozen times that the round table show is up and you've mentioned at least 1x per episode since you did it that everyone is going to accuse you all of being drunk (which I wouldnt, most probably wouldnt).
