Absolutely love the Visions era of Grimes. Sad that I never knew about her before 2020. This album would have made an awesome part of my college years.
Sound engineer here, the reason she sounded off is because her monitors weren't leveled right (notice how she puts her hand to her ear? that's a musician's way of saying 'i can't hear myself through the mix') And, she's fighting feedback the entire time on the mic because the EQ was total trash, being on the verge of feedback kills a performance. Grimes wasn't at fault here, the sound people at the venue failed.
It was probably Grimes. She tries to produce as much of her own music as possible but, problematically, I think wears too many hats, biting off more than she can chew. She wants to be empowered and I get that but I think her live performances have suffered and I wish she would let some of the burden onto others to produce something great TOGETHER (the last thing Grimes wants), at least for the live performances. The worst example I've seen is her DJing until a drop, to then start dancing very energetically to pump up the crowd, getting out of breath, SINGING (trying to), then hopping back over to DJ, repeating the process all over again. Seems like she's given up on the singing live though... which is a crying shame, and just DJs and dances now. But fortunately, these performances are grand and spectacular. She's still a wizard mixer and I would like to get hyper at one of her latest performances but I hope she sacrifices herself to let other talent contribute to her vision so she can get back to singing live and angelically again.
Anyone who is experiencing Grimes here for the first time. This is a horrible intro to her. Check out the music videos " Violence " and " Delete Forever ". She's incredible. -- This was just a very off night.
I actually think is one of her better vocal performances. I think some of the tracks on Visions were a bit easier to pull off than the ones on Artangels.
those aren't even her greatest songs. this performance and her music during this period just shows the chaos in her mind and how over the years she's become more articulate at making songs and how much she's evolved. still in shock you didnt mention art angels or visions.
