The early part of the film features Billy Hukin still working and creating open razors using traditional methods. This is followed by a later film with Ken Hawley talking to Billy who demonstrates how to have a clean shave with an open razor.
Filmed at Sellers’ Wheel, 151 Arundel Street, Sheffield and at Thomas R Cadman & Sons, Matilda Lane, Sheffield.
The first part film is one of a series filmed in the mid-1960s which Ken Hawley inspired. By then he was acutely aware that he was witnessing the disappearance of a wide range of craft skills on which Sheffield's reputation had been built over the two previous centuries. The later part was one filmed for a series entitled 'Masters of Metalworking' commissioned by Sheffield City Council's Ruskin Gallery working closely with Ken Hawley. It was originally released on no.2 of the series of films in 1993.
The film is made available by kind permission of the Sheffield Galleries & Museums Trust who now manage some of the city's museums on behalf of the City Council.

Yes i find it sad that new age masters don’t care about sharing their knowledge as much as the old masters would, nowadays the few people left with that knowledge keep it to themselves and it will in all selfishness die with them, or should i say include you in that statement ? I think yes.

It's very satisfying to shave with a Sheffield made straight razor....

What a pleasure and a privilege to watch these razor maestros doing their work. Anyone know what the final finishing stone he used was? The pre-finisher was a Belgian stone (coticule or BBW most likely), so maybe the finisher was a Charnley Forest or maybe a Thuringian?

Looked like both stones were cotis. Some can be a fair bit finer than others.
