It's a very pleasant and soothing game with farming, foraging, mining, fishing and combat skills to level up, quests, goals, achievements, unlockable extra areas to explore, things to craft and lots of decent NPCs to get to know, befriend and even marry. It's family friendly and all around charming. I recommend watching a Let's Play like on my channel if you want to see the game properly. This guy is messing around with mods which is entertaining but not a fair representation of the game.

Stardew is just a nice game with a few dark-ish twists that have the potential to become darker when mods are added into the mix.
