Her job was getting to her and started with depression. When she was young her father abused her and her mother. Eventually her mother ended up killing him and was institutionalized and Sara was placed into foster care. In the miniature killer case Natalie (the killer) blames Grissom for her foster father Ernie taking his own life to protect her and then abducts Sara and leaves her under a car in the Nevada desert. She leaves saying she has ghosts to deal with, which you can see from the letter.
Out of all TV shows, this scene is by far the most emotional I have ever felt in a series. Unique chords are played on the piano throughout this scene and supports what is going on emotionally for her. When she says "I love you", Grissom immediately takes off his glasses. The piano thenplays a couple more chords before resolving the chord at the end. The screen then goes dark.
I agree. Seeing Grissom in the scene with a very simple effect (dimming the surrounding set lights until they’re off) to accentuate the emotional gravity of the letter makes the scene that much more engaging. In that moment, you knew that his best friend and the one person he truly loved had walked out of his life - at least for a time. In that moment, you know he was alone. And the same effect is used when Sara removes her name from her vest. At that point, when the background dims to black, she has made her choice and emotionally broke away from the lab.
you are exactly right. everyone always says to me "oh its just a tv couple, its not real" and that may be true, but its more than that. you get attached, like you said, and then its like the characters become real, and thats when scenes like this become heart breaking
I've cried every single time i watch this sequence... It's just so damn sad, cried when i first saw it few years ago, cry now that i'm older. For me seasons 7 and 8 were the best of CSI
I've been with CSI since the beginning. I own all of the seasons on DVD. I've gotten to know the characters and I have this problem where I get so attached to the characters that when they leave it's like I'm losing a friend. So, basically, I'm crying.

Why am I even crying over this omg >_< I haven't even seen that many Vegas episodes (I'm a CSI NY girl) but this. urgh it just ripped my heart out :'( I shouldn't ship them but i do!!!
Every once in a while I see this episode..just when I think seen it so many times..not gonna cry..i always do..one of the greatest scenes in the series! And when she reads that letter...just wrenching..she know if she stayed, it would be a horrible end..she had to save her own sanity..
@Dany Planta totally agree. I wish they would of done an eppie of their wedding or at least a flash back. I haven't really watched since Grissom left. I've watched bits when I found out that Sara came bk but I lost faith in it when Grissom and Sara left
In context of the show, at this point Sara was 36 and Grissom, 51. If the timeline went in real time, at least. Sara's birthday is listed as 9-16 and she was 35 when she was rescued in Dead Doll.
She will... I think... She must come back!! CSI isn't the same without her! after 8 seasons with her she's a main character that can't dissapear with just that
This scene had so much impact on me. It can relate to anything that changes where we must leave and walk away to start again.... no matter how painful could be.
This reminds me my mom. That moment, that very moment that you wish you knew it was the last. That moment you would make it eternal. That very moment. Eishhh. I could sell everything just to see her again. Anyhing. Its priceless. The bad thing is that as this script says, tou live with ghosts around you. You get tired bcoz those are unreal, you cant even see or touch. She was my Pillar. My everything.
OMG THIS IS SOOOOOOO SAD!!! Like the saddest thing EVER... The letter is sooo aww and omg and I'm near crying and I just can't stop listening to it :O "Gill, you know I love you, I feel I've loved you forever" "YOu are my one and only, I will miss you with every beat of my heart.. I love you, I always will" :'( :'( :'(
ahh i saw this episode yesterday and i was shocked because i like sarah very much! i almost cried but i didnt want to because my borther was there to.. i will do that now:(:)
this is sooo sad i love gissom and sara and her leaving is like really depressing good thing she will be back but what she is back for is even more depressing :[
A few episodes before this, Sara got kidnapped by a crazy woman named Natalie (what the whole season was about) and Sara almost died. it was a life changing moment i would guess
