Very informative about the ease of loading the traditional conical without modifying anything in the Pietta. Last time I checked a few years ago I was hearing you had to get an Uberti if you wanted to shoot those long spitzerish pointy historical bullets. Impressed with the superior accuracy of the bullet too.

It's a good thing you decided to take it easy on the charge. I seen a video a couple of years ago of Blackie's where he said one of his first bp guns was a Griswold that he shot loose. I think he said he got it in the 70s though. So if it took 40 or 50 years to shoot loose, that's pretty exceptional. He never said if he shot it loose right away, or if it took ages.

Those brass frame, or gunmetal, revolvers aren't as fragile as a lot of people think. You have it nailed. Keep it BP only, and maybe download it I touch. Itll shoot a long time.

Picked up a nice old reproduction of a G&G in .44 brass. Believe it to be Pietta, replaced mainspring, hand and pawl, (broken), with my stash of Pietta parts, top of hand needed filing down. Brass and .44? Not big on that but she really is a smooth, elegant firearm.

The G&G reproduction revolvers I have found have been in the incorrect .44 caliber but are otherwise pretty good. They turned up at a local shop at different times, nice prices. They were made by Uberti in the '70s and don't have the safety pins between chambers, load one, skip one. They are otherwise decent revolvers.

Welcome to the joys of black powder! I hope you enjoy it when you get your guns. Just a friendly reminder, with these brass frame guns, make sure you don't put as much of a powder charge in the chambers. Brass is weaker than steel and if you put a normal powder charge in, it'll eventually "stretch" the frame and make the gun inoperable. I had a Pietta 1851 Confederate Navy Sheriff's Model and I was stupid and didn't listen to that. Paid the price for it after a few range trips. I hope you have a lot of fun with the guns once you get them, they really can be a blast to shoot (no pun intended). 😁

@@clongshanks5206 I buy all of my black powder supplies at a local shop, but I heard Natchez Shooters Supplies is a good website to order from. If you order powder online, one thing to be aware of, is that real black powder is labeled by the feds as an explosive, so ordering it online will also require Haz-Mat shipping charges. I personally use Pyrodex instead of real black powder. For percussion caps, a good start would be Remington or CCi #11 sized caps. With my Colt 1851 Navy, I use CCi #10 sized caps.

I have an Uberti Leech & Rigdon on the way that checks off many of the same boxes as your G & G: an Italian replica of a Confederate gun that is essentially a Colt 1851 Navy frame, cylinder, and loading lever-- but given a round barrel. The L & R should share the same lines as the G & G here, the primary difference being the L & R is steel-framed (that and the Uberti has a historically incorrect engraved cylinder rather than an unmarked one).

Going to admit, I'm interested in finding one of these solely because of the show Hell on Wheels. In one episode though, the main character, who carries a Griswold, does a kind of "speed reload" where he removes the cylinder and replaces it with one that's already loaded. I'm very curious if that's an actual thing that's possible with original Griswolds or these reproductions.
@Mikhail-Tkachenko
@Mikhail-Tkachenko Год назад
It is possible to reload a Colt style cap & ball revolver that way as long as you don't put the wedge in too tight, but having the wedge too loose can result in other problems which could be potentially dangerous. The revolver you see Cullen Bohannon speed load in that scene was an 1858 Remington which are a different design from the Colt/Griswold copies, and are much easier to swap cylinders for that reason. Cullen only carries a "Griswold" (which in the show is just a Pietta brass frame 1860 Army in .44cal) for a bit in the first season. For the whole rest of the show he carries an 1858 Remington. In that same scene you see one of the robbers attempting to swap cylinders in his brass frame 1860 Colt right before he gets shot by Lily Bell, and he's struggling with the cylinder swap because with the Colt design you have to remove the entire barrel to be able to swap the cylinder out. Whereas with the 1858 Remington you do not. In real life the most common revolver used by Confederate soldiers was the 1851 Colt Navy in .36 caliber (steel frame).

Hey dere "big chockoholic capaholic"! Nice review on a very nice gun. BUT WHY use such a "wimpy load" on a gun that needs all the power it can get?! Brass frame or not, I'd use at least 20 -24 grains FFFg for a defensive load, or as much powder as can be put behind a round ball or conical (one needs to figure out how much powder can be used) & not have the bullet schick out of the chamber to bind up cylinder rotation! .36cal. is NOT a real powerhouse!! My first black powder gun (1968!) was the same exact gun you tested, but made by Navy Arms. Don't know if it was worked over by a gunsmith, but the action locks up tighter than any S&W you'll ever see (absolutely NO cylinder play at all!!!). And NO cylinder score line by the locking bolt either (take note S&W!!)! The action is "perfection"! I haven't fired my revolver all that much over the past decades so I can't say anything about "frame stretch". But this type C&B revolver sure pleases my "aesthetic eye" for its fine beauty! If it doesn't do that, it's not for me (think "black guns"!)!!! "Gesundheit"!
