We were hunting in our home state but I wouldn't consider this our "home turf." The whitetail woods in northern Michigan is significantly different than what we're used to in the southern part of the state, and I'd be lying if I said we weren't a little overwhelmed when we arrived at camp.
The public land in this area is expansive. Acres and acres of public ground that all looks the same on the map. So, task number one was to figure out where to focus our efforts. With endless possibilities, we needed to cover ground fast.
Early in October we're usually focused on bedding to food source movement. Northern Michigan is big woods country, and finding the right food source was nearly impossible.
Water sources didn't matter because it's Michigan and there's water everywhere.
Cover for bedding was everywhere too, and if you've ever hunted Michigan you know that we have no shortage of deer. This meant sign was inconsistent and all over the place.
Our number one challenge was filtering out the good opportunities from the bad. Luckily, this is a hurdle most public land hunters are used to dealing with, and for us, this is what we love about the mobile hunting game.
Kevin Leach is our most passionate swamp hunter. The guy chooses frozen, wet, feet every time. And in this area, Kev had plenty of swamp to work with.
