Grizzlies Fighting Over Elk Carcass Yellowstone National Park 9.26.20

On the weekend of Sept. 19th - 20th, a large Grizzly Bear took down a Bull Elk in Yellowstone River just South of Canyon Village (Otter Creek area) and dragged it back to shore ( • Grizzly Kills Bull Elk... . The large Grizzly nicknamed "Hercules" guarded and fed on his prized Elk up until later that week. Sometime around Thursday Sept. 24th or Friday Sept. 25th a new Grizzly Bear showed up on the scene and dug up the carcass from the shoreline and dragged it to the spot we see on my video. There, the new Grizzly Bear guarded and fed on what remained of the leftovers. On Saturday Sept. 26th, I arrived to the location early in the morning with my camera at the ready. While clicking off pictures and filming the new Grizzly protecting the carcass I noticed a another Grizzly Bear coming out of the woods from behind. Working it's way around to the river, then stealthily stalking in the river, the new Grizzly began to slowly test the other Grizzly's determination up until the confrontation in the river. A truly amazing experience to see this. I hope you enjoy watching it.

I saw these two bears yesterday morning just after sunrise. The big one was still in the river. There was another one about a half a mile down the road, too, way up near the trees. I saw someone stop real sudden and jump out with scopes. I stopped and asked what they saw. Grizzly. I was able to see it with my binoculars. Through these people's scopes I could see the bear had a blonde face. These were the first bears I had seen in the park.

Outstanding video! Love the quality of it including the audio. Does anyone know if the second bear in the water (with no collar) is 791, the one that originally killed the elk? I can't tell for sure based on the videos and photographs I've seen. It does seem to me that 791 was larger than both bears seen in this video but so many factors can account for that (zoom level on cameras, lighting, angle, etc.). Thanks for sharing this amazing footage.

Great video! The thing that strikes me about these grizzlies is how dark their coats are. Is that a characteristic found in Yellowstone bears or could it be the lighting? The bear that has his ears pricked forward is the dominant one in almost every case except when they both do and then the fights last longer and are more intense. It was shown in this video that the bear on the kill was dominant and that was signaled by his ears. Where you can see this fact mostly commonly is by watching the grizzlies (coastal brown bear ecotype) battle over fishing spots at Brooks Falls in Katmai Nat. Park. After fights the winners often do a stiff legged walk people call the "Cowboy walk".

Dad was doing well catching trout, and was working his way along and ran into a fellow coming back the opposite way- told him he may want to not go any further, there was an elk carcass about 50 yards further down that had been covered up like we see the bear doing here-that's one of the situations you DON"T want to come up on if there's a grizzly near by, lol.

Ursus arctos horribillis, meaning a mencing powerfull predator! Well it's something like that. Powerful magnificent creature. These bears were once feared throughout the rocky mountains from Canada to Mexico, sadly they were hunted to near extinction. Partly because they were know to be so ferocious, but also because mankind knew very little about them. Found only in small pockets of Wyoming Montana, Idaho and i belive Washington state as well. Small but stable population in the lower 48, BUT still hated by hunters and ranchers who both don't want to share with these magnificent creatures of God. Not to mention the folks who fear them just because they are bears and they are there..hopefully they will be able to sustain.....

If you noticed you will also see that the first grizzly has a brown collar on and it's been well documented that grizzlies are well ahead of brown bears when it comes to fashion sense. These collars first made there appearance during the 2019 Milan fashion week and it wasn't that long before we saw these on Grizzlies throughout the west, whereas brown bears are always behind fashion trends. This also begs the question on what these two bears where fighting over. I believe the second bear is actually after that collar. They are expensive and he probably is just trying to steal the collar, he certainly doesn't look like he needs another meal!

It’s being monitored by the Park biologists - either because it has gotten into trouble with humans or because it’s part of a research project (or maybe both).

@@jeanettewaverly2590 What kind of research justifies subjecting the animal to a 24/7 collar?

mikes2842 Virtually any kind of research that involves knowing where the subjects are at any particular time. It has been SOP in field biology for decades. Those involved with it maintain that the animals become accustomed to the collars and don’t appear to be distressed by them. I have no personal experience with it and am neither arguing for or against it. You asked a question and I strove to answer it as best I could.
