Grizzlies, on the other hand, hit a top speed of 35mph, and they can maintain that speed on uneven ground with various obstructions (small bushes, rocks, and fallen tree branches) in the way for *two miles!* You can bet that even Usain Bolt would be lucky to maintain 15mph on the same terrain on which the Grizzly is sailing at over double that speed.

In 2012 I was on a bow hunting trip for Moose. We were on horseback and had a mule with us, carrying supplies. On the third day, while we were stalking a nice bull Moose, one of the horses ran passed us, some distance to our right 6, across a creek, and into the tree line. The guide looked at me with this "oh sht" look on his face. He told me to make sure my rifle, which was slung to the rear, was on the ready "in case," told me to stay where I was, and took off back toward camp, which by that time was a little more then a mile back. Of course I wasn't just going to wait there. I'm former active duty military, USMC. I'm going to find out what was happening and kill whatever necessary. So I took off too. About a half a mile back we ran upon what looked like a crime scene from the show CSI. Blood everywhere and part of a leg laying on the ground. A Griz got the mule. I mean, it was rough. We could see the bear eating her. He pulled the carcass about 70 yards or so into the woods and was going at it. My guide was obviously upset and we agreed to discontinue the rest of that trip so he could find his 2 horses a get all the stuff back to base. I helped and he invited me back to hunt on his dime the next time. Which turned out a lot better and without a psycho Grizzly massacre. We're still friends now and I've had 2 more mules delivered to his property since then. I didn't want him to run out again. 😂

So what happened!? There was one horse who was not yet full grown. I hope he didn't get any of them. I know they have to eat, but not horses. No! Me and my BFF went climbing up to top of mountain when we were like 8 or 10. Anyone who knows the Catskill Mts in NY state knows how beautiful they are. Took us all day climbing on either side of the streams and waterfalls. When we reached the top, I heard a roar. I asked my friend "Did you burp!?" (remember, kids focus on things like that at that age, she said No. Then we heard a roar and splashing in water. Lots of shallow shale rock streams. We looked over and coming at us at great speed was a huge bear! And a smaller one (not a baby, but smaller) by it's side. Welp, what took us all day to get up, took us minutes to get down! We didn't look back if it was still chasing us, we just flew down stream, falling down water falls, scraped up, sopping wet. When we made it to the house (friends old house that had the old well in the kitchen and no electricity at the time) we ran up to our mothers and told them what happened. "We got a "Yeah sure" and a pat on the head. 40 years later I saw my friend at my Father's funeral. She showed pictures of her husband and kids, then turned to me and said "Remember when we climbed upstream and got chased by the bears and nobody believed us?" I hadn't thought of that in years, but I sure do remember it! What confused me all these years later, was they were clearly brown bears, but it is reported that only black bears live in those upstate NY mountains. Then I read that black bears also come in brown... WHAT!? So how anyone knows what kind of bears are what is beyond me! It was huge and vicious, that's all we knew!

They weren't chasing you to eat you. Trust me, If they wanted to kill you or attack you, They would have, Black Bear's can run 30+ MPH in short explosive burst. So theres no way you and your friend were outrunning them. What probably happened was a case of curiosity that turned into Startlement from the Bears perspective. Or It was a mother Bear and her Juvenile Sub Adult Cub, And the Mother Bear gave you a warning charge. But the second seems very unlikely. It was probably just a case of benign curiosity. Because trust me, If those Bears wanted to Really attack you They would have without a moments hesitation. Bears are extremely fast going down hill and extremely proficient at climbing up and climbing down,So like I said if they really wanted to get you they would have. The whole thing Sounds like a big misunderstanding on your part and The Bears Part.

But I don't think it was in the water long. It problably just went a little bit then went back to its partner. All I know is it was mean, scary and looked exactly like the pictures of angry grizzlies and was brown. I didn't look behind me and don't know if friend did, we just kept going till we saw the back of the house.
