Grizzly Bear vs Silverback Gorilla: Who Would Win? 

You gotta understand that gorillas have more dexterity in their hands and feet, meaning those are four weapons that a grizzly does not have. A grizzly can only swipe and bite and drag. A gorilla can punch, gouge, gorge, pick up, push, twist things.....AND they can bite. In my mind, unless the gorilla is compromised, it would beat the bear in most situations.

I would think that the biggest advantage of the bear would quickly neutralize the gorillas biggest advantage of strength. The bears claws would sever muscle and tendons eliminating the ability of the gorilla to overpower him.

I saw a documentary on gorillas and it said that the big bump on top of its head is muscle that helps him bite down. but they showed like a diagram. but also the gorilla does not have opposable thumbs. it has a little nub but it still can grab things use them to swing or throw, its just not like a humans thumb. and they have been taught some sign language. it also said that the average gorillas arms is 20 times stronger than the average humans arm(don't know how accurate this is). the grizzly bear has to be stronger, its just physics. size does not matter until it gets to a certain point then just one sided. not only does the grizzly run fast you can watch them chase down animal at top speed for like 30- 40 seconds. for an animal this size its hard to see 1000 +lbs just keep coming like that. if the grizzly would hit the gorilla, I mean come on now even if the gorilla took off and ran the 1000+lbs of force would just catch him. and have you guys seen how big a full grown moose is, grizzlies have to live with them daily, and with antlers like that the grizzly is gone to have some kind of strategy to take an animal like that down. well I ll stop typing here, I think the grizzly would win.

I love these "what if" questions regarding animals fighting , but as a proud Canadian I will tell you people once again that there is very little chance of Anything surviving a fight with a full grown, attack minded Grizzly Bear. They are Huge, muscled, fearless, savage and have cardio for days. Just watch any video of these Apex predators covering uneven ground to get at prey and you will see what I mean. One swipe of their paw can decapitate a man.

there are some sources out there claiming the gorilla strength being much higher than that. But if averaging from sources, 4k lbs is about right. A gorilla could literally Hulk vs Loki a bear. An enraged gorilla is a force of nature. Snapping the bears jaw open 180 degrees would be nothing. Tearing off a limb wouldn't take much more effort. Instinctively the gorilla would go for the hands/arms first, then the face. Keep in mind: There are many people that have survived bear attacks. Gorilla attack survivors? Not so much....

If the grizzly did not have claws. Pound for pound, 500 lb silverback would beat a 500lb grizzly. Silverbacks have more muscle, bears have a lot of fat.

The gorilla could just throw punches but the thick body of the bear could resist, when the grizzly does his thing, clawing the gorillas body, which would start to bleed since the beginning, it would make the fight end up very fast. This without the bear even bitting the gorilla or using his weight. If the gorilla bits the bear from behind? The flexible torso of a grizzly would move fast to make him counterattack and win. Gorillas have more neurons than a bear but this is a fight between animals and no matter how intelligent punches a gorilla could throw the bear has claws, weight, shield, eyeteeth and bravery. 1000 pounds is nothing for a gorilla, the gorilla could throw the bear off of it. The bear would have a hard time to pin it down.

You changed the type of grizzly but there are several types of silverback. And the silverbacks can weigh over 550 lbs.

There is absolutely a good chance that the gorilla will win, I am not saying that the gorilla will just completely destroy the bear but there is a 50 50 chance that it will win. I have seen a video of a gorilla shatter 4 panel plexiglass with one punch so yes the gorilla has that much strength. The gorilla has to make the fight last long or otherwise the bear will win. But my point is is that the gorilla has a lot better of a chance to win than 5 percent chance.

Ha! Fun video. Agree, the bear most likely wins. Seeing declawed cats tangle with other cats is a good indicator of that might happen. And cats can generally hold their own against larger dogs - because of their claws. And that dramatic size difference is a huge factor that favors the bear even further. The grizzly would also have a considerable advantage in endurance. They can run long distances in pursuit of prey. They are designed for killing their prey. Their claws, paws and jaws would give a gorilla zero chance of winning.

Bias is definitely an understatement! One slap and the bear would knock the gorillas head off!??? If the gorilla is as strong as we all know, then don't you think their built to take powerful hits from another gorilla? They also take bites from each other with canines just as long as a bear's claws. As far as temperament, bears are extremely protective of their young; that is true but a silver back would be just as vicious as a bear if you were to come between it and one of its troops.

A Silverback would tear a human in half like a piece of paper. Any brown bear over 750 pounds would kill a silverback. But a 300 to 500 pound brown bear against a 400 pound silverback would be fairly even. I still think the bear would usuall win just because of their bone density and thick fur/fat protecting them.

I searched this subject randomly. This was like the third video I watched. I thought it would be the bear initially. But then the bear guy admitted that the gorilla is stronger, smarter and more agile. usually the strongest in a fight isnt also the most agile, and usually not the smartest. I dont think thats to be underestimated. I think if the grizzly stood up the gorilla would just jump at him and knock him on his ass. Which I think would surprise the shit out of the bear. I cant think of any other time a bear would be knocked on its ass. The gorilla would just pound the shit out of him. The ability of the gorilla to launch projectiles is a HUGE advantage. Its not like you or I. It would be capable of hurling boulders that weight thousand of pounds. I really dont see a bear dodging that. Also the gorilla is SO thick. I dont know if a grizzly could even get its mouth around a gorilla forearms. So i think the bears claws are much more of an advantage than its bite. Muscle being denser than fat, I also dont know that a bear could decapitate a gorilla as easily as you're implying. the neck is like the thickest part. I think he could inflict serious slashing damage but not much puncture damage. And if a human arm can thwart a grizzly bite, I think a gorilla could be fine. I think it would also be incredibly dangerous for the bear to go for a bite. putting its head with in arms reach of the gorilla is a bad move. Especially since it only has one mouth. The gorilla is always going to have a free arm. with that I think it would come down to if the gorilla could crush or strangle the bear before it bled to death from all the gashes. I think its a good fight and the bear wins 6 rounds out of 10. But i think a gorilla is going to put up much more of a fight than you or the bear are expecting. I remember I read sometime ago that during the Spanish colonial era here in California they would fight grizzlies and Spanish fighting bulls to the death in a bull fighting arena. Most times than not the bull would win.

During the gold rush they put a bear up against a bunch of different animals. The bear won every time. A Tiger vs Bear would be more interesting.

He could pick up a massive fallen limb and use it to break the bear's jaw. A silverback is a force of nature. No predators in Africa will even try to fuck with one. Lions will give them a wide berth.

There's no doubt. The bear is the easy winner. One good swat and the ape hits the dirt. It's downright silly to believe the ape would compare to the bear. A colonel in the US army wrote a book about the pitting of bears, lions, tigers, bulls, and other creatures for miners to bet upon in the 19th century. They pitted all of these against each other, and the bears killed all animals they were pitted against with equal speed, be it a bull, tiger (which fared less than lions), and lions, which lived for at least a few seconds against the bear. The bears killed all animals they were pitted against in less than one minute. He wrote that there is no creature on earth as vicious as a threatened grizzly bear. Perhaps a badger is as vicious if cornered, or a wolverine.

I don't think a grizzly is that big actually. Brown bear are for sure. I think an average grizzly is about 600-700 lbs. That being said... I think a charging grizzly could end the fight quickly if the gorilla does not manage to move around it. If they are staring at each other, not using speed as a strengh.... I still believe the grizzly is favored but it's definitly a close fight. A bear is very good at grappling but... Gorilla is build for it and got thumb, which is an HUGE advantage. If the Gorilla take the bear's back and pound him, I believe it's over. On the other hand, like you said, if the grizzly swipe the throat of the Gorilla, it's pretty much the same outcome as well. The Claws are deadly, so is the physical strengh of a gorilla's hammer fist. It'll be a very fast and deadly fight which I think the grizzly will win most of the time.

And let’s not forget the hands on the gorilla’s legs. Yea, a gorilla basically has four hands, and his legs which are much stronger than the gorilla’s arms. Arms of which I might remind you again regularly snap 4-5 inch bamboo-like twigs. Bamboo that has been proven to have a tensile strength stronger than steel. Hands on both the legs and arms. Strength that has been estimated to be so powerful that it can hoist 2 sedans that's cars overhead. That's over 8000 pounds in weight. A superior intelligence and bite force actually put the gorilla at an advantage. I'm not sure what meat-eating has to do with size and strength when the biggest most powerful animals on earth are herbivores. Rhino's, Cape Buffalo's, Bison, Bulls, Hippo's, and Elephants are just some examples. There are also several accounts of men killing grizzlies with knives and other basic weapons, sticks bricks, etc. The only advantage the bears has is in weight which is easily negated by the gorilla’s unearthly strength. And the bear’s paw swipe which the gorilla has the intelligence to avoid. I honestly don't see how the grizzly could ever hope to win this contest with the exception of those two factors. I know a russian trainer of wild animals who said his gorillas would regularly, playfully, grab the tails of full-grown male lions with one arm and hurl them 100s of feet like they were nothing but stuffed animals. One person in the audience also eluded to a lion tiger or bear easily beating a silverback gorilla at which point the trainer in so many words said hell no. That’s not going to happen. He said no way a grizzly or any other carnivorous animal that he knows of with the exception of maybe the Kodiak brown bear or polar bear beats a silverback gorilla. He said gorillas are freakishly powerful. And he said the gorillas were just playing around and not serious. That strength is greatly magnified when the beast gets angry. Male grizzlies weigh in on average at 400 pounds 600 pounds tops. Well known animal expert Jack Hannah said he's worked with and studied gorillas for over 35 years and has seen gorillas crush coconuts that you cant bust open with a sledge hammer with one hand as easy as you or I would crush a grape or marshmallow. He said their power is beyond comprehension.

Gorilla doesn’t stand a chance. Grizzlies have been known to take 30-40 shots from pistols and still charge. Too much fat and muscle on a bear to kill without a large caliber rifle. More than twice the weight too. I think if it ever happened the gorilla supporters would be disappointed how quick the grizzly kills the gorilla.

People seem to forget a bears strength, even though the polar bear is a different species of bear, the polar bears have been in recent fights with brown bears (because of climate change)and polar bears can drag a male orca on land, and a male orca can weigh from 7,000 to 12,000 pounds, and grizzlys still have shown to stand up to them as if they were another grizzly. so yea just saying a bear easily tips the strength scale. An average male can easily run over 30 mph, and can decapitate a mooses head with one swing. With that being said I think a bear can crush a silver back gorilla, don't get me wrong there strong in their own wrights but bears just have everything against a gorilla, except maybe smarts but then again bears are pretty smart (at fighting) as seen in documentaries they use their upper weight as a cannon, throwing their opponent side to side until it loses its balance, then the bear goes for a killing blow to the neck. And if that somehow doesn't work they could always do their crazy freak out mauling attack.

Strength stats don’t make much sense. A more heavy animals will have more strength, plus being able to move that weight at great speeds means it is WAAAY stronger than we think.

Gorillas would have the strength advantage in specific movements such as dumbbell curls, rowing, and lat pull-downs, this due to physiological differences that would have evolved as a result of having opposable thumbs, but the bear would have far more core strength as well as pushing, swatting, and bear-hug strength. Average on average (450 versus 800 pounds), the bear would quickly overwhelm the gorilla using its weight, core strength, and claws/swatting strength.

I'm going with the Grizzly. As strong as Silverbacks are, I don't believe they could contend with a 900 - 1,000 lb enraged Grizzly. Grizzlies are just too big and strong. Plus, if the gorilla were to bite the bear, it couldn't get through that thick fur to do enough damage. With his carnivore teeth and claws, the bear would do significant damage to the gorilla.
