Not only do Grizzly bears eat berries, salmon, grass, but they also eat clams! Bears open clams with such skill and delicacy that they don't break the shells.
Grizzly bears have an incredible sense of smell and are strong diggers with their massive shoulder muscles and long claws. I watched them use their noses to sniff out clams below the sand and so delicately use their powerful paws to access the morsel between the shells. The intertidal zone provides a feast of clams, mussels, barnacles, and other sources of protein for coastal bears.
In other areas on the coast, grizzlies don’t dig for clams. It’s a learned behaviour that not all bears acquire. Mother taught her cubs who I saw do a lot of clam digging as well.
