Grocery Prices in RUSSIA after the RUBLE COLLAPSE 

We have a thing they call 'shrinkflation' here in the US. Sometimes the maker doesn't increase the price of the package, they just put less product in. A package of cookies I purchase once per week was US$1.00 before the virus, now the same package is US$1.75. Some bread rolls I buy was US$1.00 before, now US$1.25. 32oz bag of whole bean coffee was US$14.95, now is US$19.75.

I have to say if I was living in Russia at this time and converting US dollars to Rubles, I could live like a King!!!! 😊

With or without..."sanctions" we are ALL in the same boat, when it comes to prices out of control, and unjustified increases the world over, especially when it comes to groceries and other basic staples with prices artificially blown way out of anything remotely resembling normality...Thank you Svetlana for this brief look on how Russia is impacted and affected by it all, in the real world...

Svetlana, I always enjoy your "grocery store" tours. I do understand that Russian wages are so much lower than those in the West. However, if I were able to travel right now to Saint Petersburg and exchange my U.S. $ for rubles I would be buying quite a lot of the smoked salmon, marinated seafood and even some "kielbasa". The prices compared to what we pay in the States are extraordinarily much lower. Take care and have a pleasant and rewarding week.

Prices seem cheap to an outsider but what locals can afford is a different matter. Great video. Can you compare restaurant menus for dining out prices? You don't have to eat there just show the prices.

Kielbasa is also known as polish sausage. The recipe for the sausage includes lots of the spice paprika, or red pepper. It is served with saurkraut or potatoes, or in scambled eggs. My favoite way is sliced thin and added to a mixture of fired onions, eggplants, peppers and tomatoes with just a bit of brown sugar. Thanks for the video.

In Estonia the dewberries have gone cheaper, 3274 rubbles per 1 Kg. In winter they were 4265 rubbles, that's about 30 rubbles for 1 berry.

I understand that there was likely some inventory and retailers are not automatically pushing up prices but are selling fairly based on what the inventory costs were. Greatings from Serbia. I can say, prices in Russia are simmilar to prices in Serbia, biger cities.

Some of those things cost the same in the US, that's nuts to me when you consider the income difference.

everything is far far cheaper than even Aldi in the UK, btw I bought one bag of basics in Aldi this week compared to last year, same things cost £8, now they cost £13, crazy.

We have high inflation here too in the USA . Oil and gas has doubled in the last year making our electricity prices very high. My electric bill was almost double from the same time last year. Petrol here is very high. Groceries for me are up by 30% to 50% in the last 18 months.

Compared with Canada some things are much cheaper, while other things are about the same. I think you are right that there will be massive price increases coming.

It is hard for people in the West to relate . For instance the average household income in the Toronto region for a year is equivalent to 6,813,439 Rubles or 567,786 Rubles a month . We would all be rich .Looking at Canada's richest city Wood Buffalo the average household income would come to 12,513,667 Rubles or 1,042,805 Rubles per month .And in Toronto you can just get by on that much .

Pricing is similar in the USA I think a lie better prices in Russia. The true difference is based on your salary/income and how much money you bring home versus how much you have to pay for food, gas, rent etc. I like to look at it as a percentage of income to determine the real cost or the true prices based on what percentage we pay. So if you normally pay 10% of your salary for necessary items and suddenly now it’s 20% of your salary then that’s a real problem. I do like the fact that even with sanctions that the government is trying to place on other countries/governments that the people become very resourceful, and still have the things they need to survive. Hopefully this will all resolve soon.

Relative prices don't mean as much as the amount of time you need to work to afford similar things. Even here in the US there is a large difference in the cost of living in different areas not just in housing but also things like grocery prices or a fast foot burger.

Standard Russian Vodka 700ml there cost about $9 converted to Australia 🇦🇺 dollars here it cost $54 normal price, discounted $38. So its 4x, 5x or 6x the prices. Our sin tax is high.

kielbasa is usually called Polish sausage in the States, although I guess most people would know what kielbasa is, just like pierogies. I took a Med cruise in Europe this year just recently, and I saw kielbasa type sausages in many places in Italy, Greece, or Spain, so it seems to be popular in Europr too. I mean the whole kielbasa thing, not cold cuts. To me, as someone living in California, those prices are very low. I am also surprised at how nice most of your grocery products look like. The selection seems to be quite good as well. I just wonder what a "baked milk" is. 🙂

The prices don't look that bad if you have dollars, but what is the average wage in Russia in Rubbles?

We pay $10- Cdn for a flat of 30 eggs here, so even if the price goes up a lill, it's still much cheaper in Russia. Thanks for the update Svetlana..

Hi Svetlana! No, the prices in the store there are pretty equivalent to prices here. Our prices have been going up a lot ever since the pandemic hit and they seem to still be going up from month to month. I think, logically, you will mainly see prices for imported goods are the ones that would mainly be affected by the change in the Ruble. What may cause prices to go up on goods grown or made in Russia would be inflation. If the Ruble continues to fall, that could contribute to higher food prices then. Sorry to hear you are now living alone. I and my ex split up a few years ago after almost 20 years. We had just grown apart and that happens. I will write you about a young lady in Southern Russia that makes a living selling her own home made soaps and skin care products. You two would benefit if you did wind up selling her products to people you know, much cheaper than imports, and splitting the profits. The 1000 rubbles you said was $10 is crazy because that what I spend on lunch 3-4 times a week. Thank you for sharing.

We have great Kabasa as well as all the other meats. I love Taylor Ham known as “Pork Roll “. When I was delivering home heating oil in the winter after we put all the farm equipment away I would get a “Porkroll,egg and cheese on a Kiser roll “ for breakfast.

I like how health conscious you are with food. The warning we are hearing, is that food shortages are on the way. For example, you can expect rice to be much higher in the near future. In my country, we make a tremendous amount of food, but it is sold to the highest bidder. This makes them rich both ways, by selling to foreign countries and shorting our supply at home, which guarantees prices stay higher than they should be. You should buy extra food and supplies if you have the money to do so. I reside in a food secure country and I still have a year's worth of food, vitamins, toilet paper and lots of camping gear. The economies around the world are slowing down and a very painful recession is forecasted. I think it will metastisize into a full depression. Big 🤠🤗

In the US we have a large selection of sausages,the best are at European stores/butcher shops.The portions ate also much smaller than the ones in the US for most items.

I was in Moscow in July when 1 dollar was about 90 Rubles and the prices were almost similar to that of India in a couple of Magnit stores. However alcohol and cigarettes and cab fares are much cheaper in Russia than in India

Thank you Svetlana for your very informative video; that package of Salami is about the same size as what I bought at Aldi here in the States which is about .45 kilograms. The price was 6.59. Over 6 thousand Rubles. It's incredible that it would have cost me 70 cents! Your Coffee low end brand is even cheaper. The average cost for Coffee here is about 6 dollars for even lower end brands. But I have noticed there are just some things I can't get anymore.

In Western Countries it's called bologna, 8:20. Your grocery prices are 4 times lower then in Canada, but I'm sure your wages are much lower as well. I liter of average olive oil in Canada is $12 to$13 ca.

Today i was shoping in a mid price chain store in Norway. I notice how much of the groceries is simular. The fish section is very simular. I noticed the varity of tomatos you have in your store. Many countrys in the vest have not so many types of tomatos too choose from. Moust of the tomatoes we use come from Spain and Italy. They have had a lot of problems with weather. Egg prices is not so big diffrent. Witch is crazy! And the chiken price is way too high.

We have "klobasa"=sausage usually cooked meat or "salama"= salami which would be air dried or smoked. Prices are very similar to my country. Or perhaps a bit cheaper if you compare them to Hofer also called Aldi in different countries. Check prices online for Italy, Croatia, and Slovenia...They are not much different. We do have a lot of different sausage names or brands..possibly because sausages are a lot like bratwurst..and a lot f Germans came to the USA a hundred years ago.. most of the jars of mayonnaise are about 32 ounces..candy bars like snickers.. are about 59 cents to 89 cents..you should take a trip to the United States..to experience a different lifestyle..when fruit is out of season..fruit comes from Costa Rica..but usually Florida and California are usually always warm enough to grow anything..

I saw another video from Russia explaining cost at groceries after crash and it didn’t look too bad. I mean it’s bad, but the cost is pretty much the same in North America. I guess like what you said, when the old inventory runs out and the store needs to restock.

Wow. You guys have lots of variety. When I went to Russia 20 years ago they didn't have much. The standard of living looks to be on par with the west now.

From what I've seen prices in Russia are about 1/5 of the USA, but incomes are 1/10. So, in effect, everything is twice as expensive for Russians versus for Americans.

Consumer price inflation (the CPI) in Russia is actually lower than the UK, EU and US at the moment. The CPI is defined as the change in the prices of a basket of goods (groceries) and services that are typically purchased by specific groups of households. It's actually cheaper now to do your grocery shopping in Russia (it never used to be) than it is to do so in the UK, EU or US - and this has been the case for a year or so.

The food prices in the United States I can tell you are still at an all-time high, as a benchmark $100 at a similar store in the United States will only get you a few cans a few box food items that aren’t great in terms of flavor or taste, but literally won’t last but three or four days for maybe one or two people let alone a family

Hi Svetlana, 👋 Question for you or anyone else what do the stores do with expired food? Here in the US, they donate it to food banks. In some cities, the restaurants donate to soup kitchens. On average our grocery prices are double or more on most products maybe more on some items.

Actually prices seem reasonable when compared to the USA, BUT retired pay in the USA is 4 to 5 times higher than a Russian pension SO in that case prices are quite high, and will go much higher as the ruble devalues. Thanks for the grocery tour and will be looking forward to the update.

Russia is not alone, when it comes to inflation. Here in California, since the war, doubled or tripled, energy, food, rent etc.. In my area to rent a room cost $1000. Government keep raising interest rates to curb inflation, but it effects home owners who pays mortgages, adds to cost of living big time. Those Russian prices are cheap compared to the food prices we have here. Hang on, it's tough all over. 🤔😱

To be fair, a lot of those prices were VERY cheap when compared to current American grocery prices, but like we know, average incomes between The US and other places around the world, there's quite a bit of a descrepency. I noticed this when i had a Filipino girlfriend 6+ years ago. I don't know what their consumer prices were, but I do kniw their wages were EXTREMELY low compared to American ones. Like for instance, at the time, I was on Disability, making roughly $750/month, I think...(i make $900 now), but a FULL TIME Phillipines Teacher only made about $650/month, if i recall. So the point is that there are some really wide ranges of equivalent incomes around the world. And comsumer prices tend to reflect that as well, meaning that they are generally scaled to what locals can afford. Getting back to these Russian grocery prices, somethings are really cheap, but others are extremely expensive even for us Americans. The one thing that jumoed out at me was those cheese pie pieces. In America, they'd sell the whole circle of cheese for about that much. And I also notice that thus is what it must be like in UK stores as well, with small portion sizes, because Brits will often come here and say how big our poryion sizes are compared to theirs. Well, part of that is due to the fact ghat our fridges and other storage spaces are much bigger than what they have, so we can store a lot more stuff than they do.

Brilliant video. The prices are unbelievably low, and I don't think that they will go much higher in coming days and months simply because most of the food has been produced in Russia. Russia is self-sufficient in about all of the home consumption, so no worries there 😉 👍

If we are trying to understand how much the items cost relative to average wages vs say US, I think we would multiply each item about 4 times.

I would like to see home prices. In the states a 20 year old home, like mine in SW Missouri, is valued at $399,000.00 to $419,000.00 US, with one home being $799,000.00. My house is nearly all brick with a 3 1/2 car garage, a wrap around front porch. It has two master suites but the one up stairs we let guest use it. Our home has an office space, three downstairs bedrooms again one of them is the primary master suite. It has a formal dining room, third bath, laundry room, living room, kitchen with a breakfast area. We have just over a half acres and live on a quite street. We have a homeowners association which takes care of the pool, common areas and trash and recycling pick up once a week. We bought our house at $105.00 a square foot. Today it’s closer to $180.00 a square foot. Please give us an idea of size of homes and what they cost.

I'm shocked how cheap your eggs are! 😱 I remember that during winter period (from November to February), a 10 pack of eggs used to cost 2.89 euros or a 30 pack, a staggering 7.59 euros or roughly 8.40 USD. That's almost 5 times more expensive than Russian eggs. By the way, I'm from Slovakia.

The more the ruble collapses, the cheaper the prices are in dollars.

I am sure the US dollar will be coming down soon as well. Food prices on average have increased at least 30%. I have noticed cooking oil has gone up in the US too. It was around $4.00, now it is $9.00 last time I bought it. It frustrates me how our governments like to play their games when the regular people like you and me are just trying to exist and be happy. Take care, I hope everything in Russia stabilizes, I'm sure the ruble will come back like it has in the past. Maybe put aside some rubles if you can and they might be worth more in the future.

It is hard to realize life with a different currency and the impact of devaluation. The prices may not seem high compared to US grocery stores but she documents how much cheaper the products were in the past and the relative income differences in Russia and the West. $10 month for groceries is hard to imagine.

Still so much cheaper than my country Greece where prices have almost doubled. Feta cheese used to be about 8€ per kilo. Now it is about 12€ or 13€ or even 16 € per kilo when it is on sale ! Chocolate bars are around 1,60€ here. Our PM is killing us...with his "love"... !😢
