i'm 42 and have lived around Alaska my entire life. bethel is a remote village and that is why it is so expensive to buy things there cause it costs alot to get everything there then it's supply and demand that kicks in. I've lived in a small town, and I currently live in a big city, the prices are nowhere this bad that people are shocked by. it's only like this in the most remote of places here. on average everything is roughly around 1-2 dollars more expensive here than in the lower 48 states. but then again we have no sales tax either. so that is figured into the price. don't think just because this video shows how bad the prices are in bethel, that they are like this everywhere.
@seanarmstrong7767
@seanarmstrong7767 5 лет назад
Thanks for that clarification from an actual Alaskan.
@zandergar9729
@zandergar9729 5 лет назад
@The Duck Pooped In My Sardine Smoothie yeah no sales tax and no state tax at all. only tax you need to deal with is the normal federal income tax. I remember when I lived in kenosha wisconsin for a little bit, I went to a 99 cent store and wanted to buy a candy bar while waiting for the bus, I had exactly 1 dollar left in my wallet, so figured i could get it. imagine my surprise that when I went to go check out, I was told I owed like 1.08 or 1.12 i forgot what it was. but ultimately I was told I couldn't get it as I didn't have enough for the transaction. lol I was so ticked off. lol
@zandergar9729
@zandergar9729 5 лет назад
@@seanarmstrong7767 no problem Sean, I was shocked by the prices shown in this video myself. in actuality some stores have the same prices here as it was in the lower 48. walmart and fred meyer (kroger) reflects the same prices I remember that I payed at places in the lower 48 as well like piggly wiggly. a loaf of typically ordinary white bread is around 1.35-1.50 here, whereas I remember paying only around 99 cents at the piggly wiggly.

Reading through the comments about the prices and wages. When I lived there and I assume it is still the same if you worked for the govt. You got a cost of living that was really very good. Of course if you lived in Bethel or Yakutat or any of the other places in the bush country you had to fly out for everything. I flew to Juneau to see a doctor while expecting number one child but ended up flying to the lower 48 to have him and be with family. But not everyone could do that. Like I said below famlies did garden when they could and if you lived where you could yes you could try to raise stock. My ex just went hunting and fishing it was easier besides we didn't live where we could garden, it was govt housing. You do what you have to do just like if you homestead say in Mt or if you live in Canada. One thing I found everywhere we lived was the closeness of friends had a lot to do with few had family close by so you helped each other I still have friends from that time and I would never trade those years for anything. Sharon.

Some of those items are similar to what we pay here in Canada, but others are quite higher! We also freeze our bread at $6 a loaf, but we eat gluten free so when it's on sale, we stock up, haha. Thanks for sharing!

Hey there happy people!! Lord have mercy!! How do people survive there?? 30 for hot pockets, $10 for Doritos, $15 for cereal. I guess I'd starve there. We pay $10 for a 24 roll pack of tissues here. Doritos are usually 2for $6 at our store. 12 pack of soda are 3 for $9. Wow that's crazy.

Valerie Knauber in the big cities in Alaska it is slightly above your prices you mentioned with a $11+ minimum wage in the secluded small towns and villages, you better know how to fish and filter water correctly

Doritos at the grocery store cost $3.49. My kids and I love Doritos but we rarely get them cause they’re expensive. I can’t imagine paying $18.00 bucks for them. Probably would never buy.

This is really interesting to see. I live in a small town in BC, Canada. Some of the prices arent that far off honestly. A lot of the frozen foods were much more but lots of the fresh produce prices were similar. I went to buy a head of cauliflower the other day and it was $6.99/head....no thanks.

@norddalle6408

The worst part is that some of those prices are similar to the prices in Denmark. $11 for 12 cans of soda is normal, possibly even "cheap" in Denmark. But 90% of the stuff is just crazy. I had to look up Bethel on a map, to realize how far away from everything it is. It's quite insane that things actually can run around like this, there gotta be some valuable raw materials in the area. But just looking at nearby cities as well, there's way more than I expected.
