God, people love to complain....literally the first comment and it's basically _"YOU'RE NOT WATCHING MOVIES THE WAY I THINK YOU SHOULD!!!!!!"_ There really isn't that much comedy in this film that can't be understood or appreciated if you haven't seen James Bond. Sure, it clues you into a lot of the overall satire but imo that's not even the most important or enjoyable aspect of the film. Most of it can be appreciated without outside context. I mean, you're acting like they just sat there confused the whole time, but they were literally smiling and laughing through most of it. Why isn't that enough? It's okay if every viewing experience they have isn't completely 100% optimal and to your standards. The fact that you even say *"They* don't have" (talking _ABOUT_ them) rather than *"You* don't have" (talking _TO_ them) makes it seem less like you wanted to personally let them know how they could have improved their experience of the film, and more like you're just wanting to just let everyone know that you would have enjoyed this more had they done things your way.

British television shows such as The Avengers (not related to the Marvel characters), The Prisoner, and American shows like The Man from U.N.C.L.E. were also influences. The transitions with the band are an homage to a TV series called Laugh In. They had many of these transitions per episode. This was the TV series that launched Goldie Hawn‘s career. So much of the 60s is referenced in this movie, I absolutely love it lol. The black cat suit that Mrs. Kensington wore in the beginning, and that her daughter wore later on, is also an homage to a character named Mrs. Peel from the British TV series,The Avengers. That series was a completely unique spy series. With absolutely wild storylines. Mike Myers was also paying tribute to the Our Man Flint spy, movie series, as well as Matt Helm movie series, which was comedy, spy, movie. I love all the references to 60s stuff. When this came out, you were hearing one liners from it everywhere. "Yeah, baby, Yeah!!" & "Groovy Baby" especially. Some of my friends from the era will still address me as Mr. Powers, using the Dr. Evil voice. Powers was a Great last name to have while these movies were big.
Mike Myers (not Michael... that's a fictional murderer) is a lot more than just The Cat in the Hat. He was a very popular SNL cast member in the late 80's/early 90's, where he created a little skit called Wayne's World (playing Wayne). They made a movie out of it that was a surprise hit (also a good reaction idea), spawning a sequel and launching Myers' successful film career. He made another Wayne's World, 3 Austin Powers flicks, AND... voiced Shrek in countless films and shorts. He has also done a few well-received dramatic turns. Not sure if you noticed, but he played BOTH Austin and Dr. Evil.

For the voice of Dr. Evil, Mike Myers is doing a pretty strong impression of his old boss at Saturday Night Live, Lorne Michaels. Myers doesn't really think Lorne is evil, but Lorne is Definitely in charge at SNL, and his "big boss" energy is HUGE, which makes him a perfect template for a comedic autocrat like Dr. Evil.

He had a lot of fond memories of watching '60s British spy movies with his dad as a kid, so he wrote this spoof as a tribute to the movies his dad loved so much. Yeah the guys need to check out some early James Bond movies to get the spy cliches being ripped off for laughs like Dr Evil’s look (You Only Live Twice) the girls innuendo filled names (Pussy Galore - Goldfinger, Xenia Onatop - Goldeneye), the henchmen etc etc. Also draws on another 60s spy film series “In like Flint” and “Our man Flint” which was equally cheesy (but didn’t mean to be funny…!).
I remember when word got around back in the 90's about this movie. Everyone rented this from Blockbuster. It was never promoted or placed in theaters. But it was the most rented video that year (the wait was soo annoying) but when it was available we were in tears😂 school was a mess with various quotes 🥰🥰thanks for the memories
As someone else mentioned, the transitions pay homage to the show Laugh In. Elsewhere throughout the movie, Mike Myers did a great job at basically mocking the spy movies and shows of the era, James Bond being one of those, and especially those where the bad guys say they were going kill somebody and gave the opposing characters every chance to survive. The scene with the sharks is a great example. It’s probably challenging to understand the brilliance of all the references had you not lived in the era. Born in 1965, it was a hilarious throwback. 😁
Born in 68, so got all the 60s and 70s references. I mean some of it was before my time, but there'd be reruns and references to those things, especially with slightly older siblings. The idea that most people think it is ONLY a direct parody of Bond is misleading to them. The general theme is, but Austin himself is more compared to other spies of the time.

I'm convinced all react channels have had horribly boring childhoods. That being said I love you guys. You two have really good and unique takes on movies..... 99% of the time.
The key element to a successful reaction channel is a large library of stuff they haven't seen. I couldn't ever do a reaction channel for many reasons, including my personality, but even if I was charismatic I've seen just about everything. Some people just don't watch a lot of movies or listen to a lot of music outside of a single genre. And whereas growing up in the 70s, 80s, and 90s we didn't have a lot of entertainment options outside of TV, movies, and primitive video games, today's younger people grew up in a world where RU-vid exists.

There's a lot of 'Bond' references in this, such as Dr Evil's hench man 'Random Task' is based off 'Odd Job' from the Bond film 'Goldfinger' the same is true for, 'Alotta Fagina' in the Bond film there was 'Pussy Galore'. 'Dr Evil' is based off a Bond villain called 'Blofeld' who dresses the same. The next two Austin Powers films are just as good.

The anti-radioactive suit at the final battle in Dr Evil's lair is from 1962 "Dr. No". The promiscuity, the irresistible sex-appeal, is a well known Bond characteristic. Dr Evil and his cat is a parody of Ernst Stavro Blofeld, the chief of the criminal organization Spectre where its members were designated by numbers, hierarchically. Frau Farbissina is a parody of Rosa Klebb from 1963 "From Russia with Love". Number Two was a parody of Emilio Largo from 1965 Bond movie "Thunderball". Basil Exposition is "M" from the Bond series, etc. The references are so many...
The guy who throws shoes is based on a James Bond Villain called "Oddjob" he is famous for having hidden blades in the rim of his hat and throwing it like a frisbee
The transitions are done in the style of the late 60's TV show called Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In. They would do transitions like that with girls in bikinis with writing all over their bodies Goldie Hawn was very famously one of them. You can find official clips on RU-vid. They also did similar transitions in other more campy spy movies of the time.
The sequel ("The Spy Who Shagged Me") came out a few years later and was a play on the Bond film, "The Spy Who Loved Me." The Austin Powers title caused controversy in England since "shagging" over there is the equivalent of the F-word.

Mike Myers has this... obsession... with Scotland. Not even a terribly accurate one, but he's fun. There are people with Scottish accents in Axe Murderer, he gave Shrek a Scottish accent too (there was no reason for it... that's just what he did), and then he did this skit for SNL about a Scottish guy in America running a Scottish gift shop that never actually made it onto the show. My Senior year of high school (1998), the monday after our JROTC Military Ball. We were watching this in JROTC. The scene where Dr. Evil is trying to do the Macarana, another classmate shouted out, "Hey! It's Brian dancing." I replied, "What are you talking about! I can't dance that good."
I don't know what possessed Mike Myers to give Dr. Evil a son, but that storyline is one of my favorite things about this trilogy. Such a brilliant way to highlight the difference between then and now. =)
The actor who played Basil (Austin's Boss) is Michael York, a very successful and well known actor. He was in another series of movies that I strongly recommend, "The Three Musketeers" (1973) and "The Four Musketeers: Miladys Revenge" (1974). Awesome period piece films with plenty of humor. Years later there was a third movie in the series, but it did not do as well.

I went to see it in its original theatrical run in Spring 1997 and I was in there with maybe 20 more people. When the " Who does number 2 work for? " scene happened, I was laughing so hard that I was crying. Lol. " Damn, son,what did you eat!?", lol. Goldmember from 2001 is also hilarious.

International Man of Mystery was actually a commercial success in theaters, grossing over $67 million worldwide on a $16.5 million budget, but it was more of a modest success than a mega blockbuster. Then, like you said, the home video sales and rentals, especially being one of the first feature films released on DVD, helped it become a massive cult phenomenon.

What a groovy reaction!! When this came out for what ever reasons it didnt make a big splash at the box office. It became a sleeper hit over the next two years. Between DVD players becoming available and this movies passionate fan base a perfect storm was brewing for the release of the second film in 1999. It grossed 54 million on its first weekend, which was huge for that time and more than the first movie grossed for its whole run. There are a lot of references to the James Bond spy series, I think you guys would enjoy reacting to. For the second one ,Madonna has a single on it called Beautiful Stranger, please react to it, I think she won a grammy for it, it s discoish and physcodelic popish. and one of my favorite songs of hers.
It's a combination spoof of James Bond, sixties culture, British and American culture and stereotypes and and how it relates and/or doesn't relate to modern culture. Doctor Evil is wearing a type of Nehru jacket...a popular style in the 1960s. Those "Transitions", as you called them, are references to a 60s cultural comedy tv show of the late 1960s called "Laugh In"....which was a take off on the 1960s social phenomenon known as a "Love In'. I'm glad you got it as much as you did...the cultural and historical references really hit home for those in or near my age group, as they are much more recent history for us...as well as carrying of into the following couple of decades, to some degree......you did well.
Loved your reaction to this. I don't think Amber was enjoying the movie at all in the beginning, but by the end she seemed to accept the fact that it was a spoof, a quirky, ridiculous comedy full of absurd people, situations, and plot. I think the '60s vibe and music helped her get into it a little bit, so I was glad to see it. When you get the chance, please add "Weekend At Bernie's" to your list. Another crazy comedy that I think you'll both like, especially you Jay since you love oddball movies like "Napoleon Dynamite" and "Ace Ventura" (two of my favorites also!).

The best thing about this movie is that it's a parody of old spy movies, but it's so funny that you don't need to have seen those movies to get the jokes. When this movie came out, it was a special treat for those of us who grew up watching 1960's Spy-Fi movies. The early James Bond films (especially Goldfinger) and the James Bond knock offs like Matt Helm & In Like Flint. If y'all ever watch any of those you are going to get so many jokes from Austin Powers all of the sudden. AndI just gotta say, if you liked this, you should check out another Mike Myers film Wayne's World. It came out before Austin Powers and has a great soundtrack.
There are TONS of references to James Bond films. The Villian's names are all take-offs of the Bond Villans. I HOPE you watch the 2nd one as it includes Mini Me which is so much fun!

I loved how totally lost they were with those interludes! They felt so natural to me when I first watched these movies because lots of shows did transitions that way in the 60s and 70s (popularized / stolen from Laugh In doing it first), but they've clearly never seen anything like it. Lol X)

The Fembots were inspired by a couple of spy spoofs from the '60s: _Some Girls Do,_ in which androids disguised as beautiful women are dispatched to assassinate horndog political figures around the world, and _Dr. Goldfoot and the Girl Bombs,_ featuring Vincent Price as a mad scientist. They've been a minor staple ever since; fembots were the best-known enemies of _The Bionic Woman_ and probably inspired both _The Stepford Wives_ and _Westworld,_ as well as a crummy _Terminator_ knockoff called _Eve of Destruction_ with Gregory Hines. (Poor broken Eve has an armed nuclear bomb in her womb.)
Dr.Evil’s jacket was called Nehru popular in 60s and in India. The song in the big fight was Secret Agent Man from 1966 by Johnny Rivers, loved this song as a child.
Y'all are too young to know this, but the big Asian henchman of Doctor Evil who "threw the shoe" at Austin 44:16 he is supposed to be a parody of one of James Bond's (007) most notorious villainous characters (named "Oddjob") in the movie, "Goldfinger" (1964). That actor's name was Harold Sakata. In that film, Oddjob would throw his hat at his victims, like a flying guillotine, which had a very sharp blade in its brim. Oddjob was a notably funny name for the main bad guys right hand "go to" guy, so that's why they named the Asian guy in this movie "Random Task", LOL. By the way, this whole movie was a parody of all the 60s British spy movie and televisions shows what were always over the top. Also other British cultural things that were popular back then, like the TV show "Laugh-In" (which was the inspiration for all of those wacky "transition" scenes that you thought were weird, lol). And if you may or may not know, the famous character, James Bond, was always a ladies man in those spy movies, hence why they joked about Austin Powers being such a ladies man in this movie. Also, the third installment to this series, "Goldmember" is obviously a parody of the James Bond film I mentioned earlier, "Goldfinger" (1964). LOL, oh, and the "Judo Chop!" joke is making fun of the old school British spy movie fight scenes, which actually utilized that as a common fighting technique. Back then, Europe and the West were just getting introduced to Asian martial arts, and all they could seem to get was the Judo chop technique, so they ran with that. LMBO! :D

"I expect you to die, Mr. Bond". You have to know about the early evil characters from the 60's Bond movies with Sean Connery, in their Mao style clothes. Then you mix it with the humour of the great Peter Sellers and director Blake Edwards (The Pink Pather movies), spice it with some swinging sixties London into it and have the genious of Mike Myers to create it (Mike Meyers is a huge fan of the late, great Sean Connery. Watch Myers speech at Connery's AFI Life Achievement Awards). I've mentioned before, that you have to see some of the "Pink Panther" movies (the original ones of course), you'll cry from laughter. The two best are: "The Pink Panther Strikes Again" (my favourite) and"Revenge of the Pink Panther". And you must of course see "Goldmember", the second Austin Powers film.

I had a day off of work the day this came out and decided to see it, but didn't expect much. I libed it so much! After I got home I called my mom at work and told her I was taking her to see Austin Powers after she got off work! She agreed and we both loved this movie! It was so funny!

When Scoot meets Dr. Evil fir the first time, the Macarena and him lunging at Scott was all adlibbed. At one point Seth looks away almost into camera. He was looking at the director, for suggestions because he had no idea what was happening. The director simply signaled to roll with it. "Get away from me, you lazy eyed psycho!" was his own adlib. The odd transitions with the band are important, in an inside joke way. When Mike was on SNL, he created a 1960s spoof band with him as lead singer Austin Powers. The original members appear in each film. The female guitarist is Susannah Hoffs of The Bangles. Her husband is the director. The bassist is singer/songwriter Matthew Sweet. "Girlfriend" (1992) is a good song to start with. A lot of the names and a few of the characters are direct spoofs of things from the James Bond films. Particularly, the cat, Random Task (Odd Job in Bond who throws his razor edged hat), Alotta Fagina (Pussy Galore).

He plays Austin/Dr.Evil/Fat Bastard And Goldmember. If you have ever seen SHREK... he is the voice of Shrek. Oh.. and yes.. he plays The Cat In The Hat.
Love the Duran Duran shirt. Like all British boys of a certain age they grew up on James Bond movies. So it was a huge thrill when they did the theme for A VIEW TO A KILL and it was the first Bond theme to hit #1. This movie is a sort of spoof on the spy movie genre so you probably should have watched a Bond film first. It's actually more based on Bond type films like IN LIKE FLINT. I wouldn't try to convince you to do all of them but you should at least watch one of the Connery ones and then move on from there.
The Austin Powers movies are spoofs of the James Bond movies. For example, one of the villains in a 007 movie was named Odd Job, and his weapon of choice was his razor-edged hat, which he threw at his victims. In this Austin Powers movie, they named their villain Random Task, and he throws his shoe instead! 🤣 Another example is the name of the femme fatale. In one 007 movie, the character's name was Pussy Galore. In Austin Powers movie, it's Alotta Fagina! Clearly you can see the play on words, which was cleverly done. Mike Myers plays the characters: Austin Powers, Dr. Evil, Goldmember, and Fat Bastard. These movies are hilarious! Can't wait to see you watch all of them! Especially Gold Member! 🤣🤣🤣

"I expect them to die" was a direct spoof of James Bond. In the movie "Goldfinger", as the laser is about to cut Bond in half (crotch first), Bond says "Do you expect me to talk?" Goldfinger replies "No, Mr. Bond -- I expect you to die" and leaves the room.
Not sure if you caught it, but Mike Myers (aka Austin Powers) also played the part of Dr. Evil. Most younger people probably wouildn't have known it, but there were some pretty big names in this film. You should look up the cast! Thanks for another great movie reaction! ✌💙✌
The fellow playing the piano on the double-decker bus was Burt Bacharach, a famous songwriter who wrote many hit songs in the 60s and 70s for Dionne Warwick and numerous others.
Great job, guys, as always! Interesting trivia for this movie; the guy who played Random Task (the shoe guy) is currently incarcerated on murder charges. Totally agree! So I Married an Axe Murderer is hilarious and should be on your comedy list. Also, not related to this, but another one that should be on your comedy list should be Better Off Dead. Many classic one liners. In the 80's some of the funniest zany movies were written by Savage Steve Holland and Better Off Dead is the funniest to me.
33:17 - The Security guard in this scene is actor, Michael McDonald, who played an iconic character ("Stewart") on MadTV back in the 90s and 00s. You two should check out some of those comic sketches, they are hilarious!!
Here we go! Such a hilarious movie. Mike Myers was on top of his game coming off the success of Wayne World. This first part and pt2 are the best. Pt3 Goldmember is mid so if you enjoyed that, you're definitely love the first 2.
Guys this was by far one of my favorite reactions. The second is funny too but the third one is Goldmember and it’s my absolute favorite of the trilogy. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE watch Dumb & Dumber!!!! Please just know that is the same humor as ace Ventura and Austin powers. It’s beyond worth watching and I guarantee it will make You laugh until it hurts.
