Richard was almost always laid back, quite quiet and thoughtful when doing interviews. Seeing him on a talk show makes you appreciate just how much he put into his standup. He was an absolute genius and Steve Martin is no slouch either. These old shows, which happened when I was about 20, are great glimpses into that time which was a really cool time to grow up.
I dont mean to be so off topic but does anybody know of a trick to get back into an Instagram account? I was dumb lost the login password. I love any help you can give me!
@Anthony Jaylen Thanks for your reply. I got to the site through google and im trying it out atm. I see it takes quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
All of these comments bashing Steve or saying the interview is awkward… you’re completely missing the point, lol. That’s the whole joke-Steve’s entire shtick is that meta, 4th wall irony. The “interview” is just one big bit in the same style. I don’t know how that isn’t obvious. It’s amazing, very Kauffman-esque.
Oh man poor Steve. I thought this interview was pretty damn awkward. Steve is just not cut out to be interviewing someone. Luckily Pyror was laid back and helped him out. Numerous times Steve just threw out fluff when he had nothing to say and you can sense that look of 'Oh god.. what am doing' on his face.
You're dead wrong. Rich was humoring Steve. Steve knew it and was intimidated (CLEARLY). This is one of the worst interviews that I have ever watched unfold.
I thought this was a great interview, Steve and Richard showed great calm and collectiveness showing their great showmanship that they've expertly homed throughout their fabulous careers!
I don't know why Martin stopped being funny after a while he sold out and just got paid to act it corny kids and family movies while Pryer just hilarious for life
@@charlesciminera5881 Only Murders in the building 😍 Bowfinger (saw it in the theater when it came out in the late 90's All of me (saw that as a kid in the 80's). He was very good, the movie. was just ok. People seemed to like Father of the Bride, I had no interest in it. Parenthood he was ok, in that, ok movie. Beyond that, I wonder what happened as well.
@@srldwg he sold out and cashed in much more money in corny kids movies than stand up only movie he did was funny was the jerk just in my arrogant oppiion
its weird how ahead of its time this was/is apparently, with people thinking they had bad comedic chemistry. This was almost a short masterclass on meta-humor. And to people who think they didnt like one another Pryor's on words about Martin were "Steve is an artist." (and 'dont talk shit about think' lol something to that effect its in the mormon interview)
Steve Martin seems intimidated by Pryor and it almost seems as though Pryor decided to give him nothing after seeing that Martin didn't want to have a real conversation with him.
put yourself in this time.. The Carson show was still huge at the time and Johnny Carson was royalty. It wasn't like today and all the failed late night hosts. To host the Carson show was a big, big deal and huge shoes to fill for this era.
i would agree that this interview clearly revealed a lot of tension between the two although Rich definitely held his composure in contrast. But I would not agree that it was the worst. I could just sense the rivalry so much between them that it made me feel uncomfortable. Even their body language gave it away.
This interview is a lot more entertaining when you realize Steves just trying to take control of Pryor, Steve isnt as fummy as Pryor but he still holds almost a debate for laughter
When guest go on a talk show they are usually expected to say something that would entertain the audience and do it with some degree of enthusiasm. Seems like Richard Pryor didn't feel like "entertaining" and just was content to schmooze with Steve. Richard's understated tone may have thrown Steve off just a little but Steve seemed to have played off of it and rolled with it. Richard might've recognized it in Steve and intentionally perpetuated the understated approach (maybe, maybe not). It seemed like a poker game or chess match in keeping coolness in a somewhat unconventional interview. It was an interesting meeting to watch especially when you understand that they were the 2 hottest names in stand-up back then and today are iconic figures in comedy
they are just messing with each other and people (us) are taking it wrong. Don't make this into something it wasn't. Martin has always had a weird sense of humor.......
Rest in peace Richard Pryor... This is amazing!!! And a complete brilliant work by two comedy masterminds. I'm betting Andy Kaufman was fully mesmerized if he saw ever saw this! :D
It shows interviews are not easy. Hosting a Talk show is not easy. Bill Cosby was awful at it. So was Jerry Lewis. So was Chevy Chase. They couldn't step back and let the guests do their thing. Cosby was always rude and evil to the guests. So what a Carson or Letterman did isn't easy. Here Steve Martin struggles at it, as he often did. So a less comical Jack Parr, Dick Cavett, Mike Douglas, Phil Donahue, Tom Snyder could interview a wide range of people from Popes to Presidents to all forms of entertainers, and that ain't easy. The Tom Snyder interview of Charles Manson, few could do that. The David Frye interview of Nixon. Lester Holt actually got President Trump to admit that he see's nothing wrong with Russia rigging a USA election as long as Trump wins......Now this is NOT the worst interview ever, but it shows how hard hosting a talk show is, and the ones who make it look easy are rare talents. I think Morgan Freeman could have gave good interviews, but I feel there is little Morgan Freeman can't do. I must mention one woman, and Barbara Walters gives good interviews....I think the trick of giving interviews is to be able to step back and not hog the show, and many comics can't step back. As for hosting, we saw Chris Rock error at the Oscars, and it shows that Hosting a show is Not Easy. Often, less is better, but comics often can't step back and do that.
like two boxers feeling each other out. fair play to pryor its not easy getting steve martin on the back foot in a verbal sparing session but pryor did almost wright from the start. althought steve arguable had the harder task as host being expected to lead the questions. must be alot of pressure for comics together on a chat show, there both going be wanting to hold there ground and out wit the other. thay almost cansel each other out in this. there no stright player for a comic to counter off.
Steve Martin is a terrible host and interviewer. He doesn't even know what to say. Richard Pryor literally has to help Steve Martin make conversation. Richard Pryor covered Steve Martin's inability to make conversation. Steve Martin was totally unprepared for this interview as a host and interviewer. Steve Martin is definitely not gifted with Hosting a talk show. He is more of a private actor and comedian...
2 great comedy legends together, wow! Both has done some of the greatest and legendary comedy films that will forever be in the great halls of comedy. Even though they didn't share any scenes in it it's great that they actually shared the movie together, The muppet movie which was great!
@@Danimal77, yep, for instance, American audiences would laugh at you Dan Maler if you fell into a vat of sewage. Me, I would look to come to your non-rescue with more sewage and a dump truck.
Wow y'all. Here's my two cents:(1). I believe they're both playing ridiculous twists on "the straight man". (2). They are not "messing" with each other as their primary objective; they're "messing" with US! C'mon y'all, don't you hear all the hidden, absurd, dry ass comedic commentary, disguised as droll, lazy, nearly clever, blow-hard chest-thumping? But none of it ever really takes, for either of them? Cuz they're constantly working us, together to that absurdist humored end! 😮🙃 I say to them both:BRAVO! Excellently pulled fast one!😂😂
Why is ths world trained to divide & conquer there was no tention here you can tell it was high respect & regard from them both. Thet both had become successful for what they both loved agreed to free lance the interview & got away with some great chemistry during an improv type of interview let's just bounce off each other as comedians
Sad terrible interview...it just seems like Steve is unprepared and desperate. He should have traded seats with Richard and let him show ya how done!!! Everyone take note!!! Especially with what we see now with the tonight show...what a waste.
I feel like comedians, especially years ago, were highly competitive and jealous of another one stealing their spotlight. As great as Richard is, he’s definitely not giving Steve mush here. Seen him not getting along with Chevy Chase, and even Eddie Murphy has said that he wasn’t supportive behind his back.
Steve was a horrible guest show host. This is just a terrible terrible interview. Two comedians and this is the result ? Seems like some kind of tension here. There's a reason why Carson was so good at what he did.
This is just incredibly funny. Pryor is so honest and funny and Steve Martin was just starting to explode and become the number one funny man in the nation.
Steve martin is the whitest person I have ever seen. his hair is white, his skin is white, even his damn clothing is white. if you look at his watch, I bet its white too! lol not that there is anything wrong with it, but he was perfect for "the jerk" because of it I think.
One of those last shows was at CarnegieHall(ithink?) and featured TheBluesBrothers as an opening act..... And that movie theWiz just freaks me out.. "..gotta get on down, get on down, down the road..."
Johnny really dig richard pryor. Something was off about this interview. Steve appears intimidated by Pryor. I like how Pryor, started interviewing Steve Martin
Richard was top of his game at this point and Steve was just about to become the next big thing. This is a very interesting point in both of their careers.
Steve Martin is a dork....here he had a great opportunity to do a great interview with a comedy legend and he screwed it up big time......never have liked Martin....
They were both super talented, but this struggle just proves, without a doubt, what a genius Johnny Carson was. Steve had a great comic ability himself, but couldn't pull it out of Richard. Richard was not at his best, and Johnny wasn't there to bring it out, which he could do with ANYBODY. This is a great piece of nostalgia just seeing these two at this moment in their lives, but you have to know the best work of both of them to get anything out of this SAD segment.
Pryor was tense in every interview. Just watch any clip of his interviews here. He was an intense guy, There was no rivalry but Pryor didn't know Martin at the time. Search "Richard Pryor on cocaine" where he says Martin is a genius.
