A couple weeks back we summited the highest peak of Austria - Grossglockner. It was a two-day ascent. On the first day, we hiked from the parking at Lucknerhaus to Erzherzog Johann Hütte. It took us about 4 hours. We got just in time before the snowstorm arrived. It only took about half an hour until the weather cleared and we saw the beautiful views before night.
The following day we woke up early, ate breakfast, and climbed to the top of Grossglockner. The weather couldn't have been better, and the snow from the night before didn't affect our climb much.

This caused me to relive memories from 1976. I am British and went on a 2 week ice climbing course in Austria. I was only 19. I remember climbing the Silvrettahon and we went East to climb the Gossglockner, the highlight of the trip, and did the same route as you (along with a team of course). We had good weather. It is my only experience of the Alps. I went on to walk up all the Munro peaks in Scotland (last one in 1996), however lived in New Zealand for 5 years and climbed in the Southern Alps including Mount Cook. The Southern Alps are all rubble compared to the Alps, and unlike the Gossglockner, found Mt Cook really scarey. In hindsight wish I had done more in the Alps. However a superb memory and thank you so much for posting.

Respect for the team because I know what you went through. My team and I climbed Grossglockner on August 1, 2022, and we were not served by the weather like you. There was new snow that fell during the night and we were followed by fog. Mostly an extremely nice experience.

Some parts in the shade were a bit icy, so it’s easier to climb rock with crampons than climb ice without them :) Although I did decide to put them off eventually.

Nice video!! Thanx for posting. I am planning to go there soon. My question is: How long did it take you from the hut to the summit?
@andrazegart
@andrazegart 11 месяцев назад
Thank you! Hmm I think it was probably about 2hrs… but that was because we were roped up. If I were to go again I wouldn’t use a rope and then it’s more like 1hr…

Some beginner question: do we need to stay connected to a rope together with my friends when we are climbing and what is the purpose, i am talking about the orange thin rope? Isnt the via ferrata gear just enough?
@andrazegart
@andrazegart Год назад
This is not a via ferrata. It is an alpine ascent, and if you don’t have experience with alpine climbing and glacier crossing, you should hire a mountain guide.
@petkopetkov7333
@petkopetkov7333 Год назад
@@andrazegart it looks like you can use via ferrata gear for more safety, i know its not exactly a via ferrata

So i think i have enough experience for the trekking/ rock part, but never did an glacier crossing, except once when i climbed the Zugspitze with a lot of snow(i know there is a glacier crossing part but I didn't realise where exactly), so is that part of the grossglockner hard or?

@@petkopetkov7333definetly dont recommend going to a mountain like this if you havent done atleast 1 alpine climbing course you can put yourself and the people that gotta save you in danger
@TomaszKalisz-rb4ym

Note that there are only metal posts around which you can wrap the rope to minimize the risk of a "long fall" and pulling other people with you. This is definitely NOT a via ferrata.
