I watched your whole video waiting to here this guitar, rock music with a jazz guitar, you should stick to a strat lol and leave the jazz guitars alone,no rocker would come on stage with that guitar.its a jazz guitar and you didn't do it any justice at all.
sir any guitar can be used for literally whatever. i dont care about the jazz tones from this guitar i love everything else about it, especially its price so this video is great for me. there are plenty other demos that play some quality jazz just go watch those
Well said! I see more people take hollow body’sand try to rock out on them along with a few penetonics. I’m sorry to say this but either they don’t play jazz or they don’t know how to get the sound out of the guitar. It’s Boring!!!
I bought mine a couple months ago and i have noticed how everyone who has one of these seems to love it because it is so easy to just play around the house acoustically without bothering the family. It sounds good plugged in too, but also like the convenience of just picking it up anytime or anywhere and play it. Not real loud but loud enough. I love mine . Thanks for the honest gushes!
I don't remember if I posted this on the last video with this guitar, but back in the initial rush for Firefly ES-335 style guitars, I jumped on the boat a little late, but kinda got obsessed with getting an inexpensive guitar in that style. Looking around I found a factory direct Grote dealer on Ebay, before they were on Amazon. I eventually pulled the trigger and purchased it for 199. The fit and finish were very good, however the fingerboard was filthy, and there was a decent amount of sawdust in side the body. After a cleaning and a string change, I was super happy with the guitar. The fret work is solid, the neck feels good and the hardware is solid, if unexceptional. It plays well, and sounds good both plugged in and acoustically. All in all it was a really nice purchase, and filled that semi-hollow hole in my heart. I'd have to say, I'm decently impressed by the brand and would recommend it for someone looking for an Epi level of experience
Agreed with everything you said! Got mine a month ago and after a new set of strings, graphite on the nut and slight intonation changes, couldn't be happier!!
I bought one of those, got it about a month ago, love it! Mine's a daily player too. Planning on getting a bone nut for it, but not modding anything else.
@@Arcturian1111 there's a reason Gibson quit using plastic - Other materials sound better. I've had many plastic nuts replaced with tusq, and it definitely improves the tone. No doubt about it.
@@Arcturian1111 I put a bone nut in every guitar that I can. I used to believe that the Tusc Graph Tech nuts were the best, but the older I got and more experienced I am with working on guitars, I think the unbleached buffalo bone nut is the best. Add some nut and saddle lubricant and you will understand why. Just try it.
It’s awesome with fuzz! I want to hear it clean more. I should just get one. Flatwounds might be nice too. What Willie Nelson songs do you like to play?
Just woke up from 4 years of sleeping on this grote guitar. I'm left handed but Im not gonna flip the nut or string it backwards because it is awesome. Been playing backward chords with it. You were right way back then that these grotes are gush worthy
Your reviews are excellent. I’m a jazz guitarist, and I get that same late-nite itch to play often and this git is perfect for that type of use…but I might use it gigging. 😎🎸
I have two Grote guitars this one in Tobacco Burst and A red Gibson 335 type and man, like you said, I LOVE THESE GUITARS! My very first guitar was a Harmony semi-hollow body that I bought from Sears, I eventually sold it. But I always wanted another. As the years progressed, I became a BC Rich fanatic. My main guitar is a red BC Rich Bich with a 24 fret neck, but when I hit the stage I have these two Grotes with me as well. They are my main 22 fret guitars. I love Grote guitars.
Bought the same one same color 2 months ago. I fully agree its a long and gushing love affair. I just love to sit on the couch and play chords during the commercials. It has 1 flaw but it could have 20 and it would still be worth 169.00. What amp were you using in this vid. Great tone. Also having the pickup lower pushes the guitar into sweet spot tone its not EVHs guitar.
I have a Grote 335 and love it. I have 15 guitars and it’s my daily player. I just ordered an LP Grote and will do a live unboxing on my channel march 15th. Can’t wait
Picked up my Grote full hollow in perfect condition for 80 USD with a hardshell case, used of course, and agree with you! It's a very fun guit to play. I also have its big brother 335 and love that sucker! Would love to hear your opinion on the Grote Tele semi hollow! Stay grounded!
Guitar "experts" are a dime a dozen on RU-vid but you don't come across like a know-it-all or an egotist. You seem like a regular guy, the kind you'd meet when you're out & about & enjoy a beer with. VERY refreshing! I l also like what you said about this guitar, kind of. You see, I prefer the look of the 335 copy semi-hollow but now I don't know which one to buy... Nice one...! And I thought we were going to be friends! But seriously (yes, that was an attempt at humor,) great channel. I look forward to exploring more of your videos & making the decision about my next guitar even more baffling.
I still have and use this guitar reguarly as my 'house guitar'. I ended up selling off all my 335 style guitars but kept my squier starcaster, I have kind of odd tastes but those are just the guitars i like. welcome to the channel ;-)
So just wondering, what is your recommendation on Strings to replace factory strings. Thinking on buying one. I'm an acoustic player, and this would be a great guitar for me I think.. Great Video! 👊
I bought a Grote electric 12 string. It's beautiful. I had to put on heavier strings. When I played chords on the light strings it played out of tune because of the fret height. The heavier strings fixed it. The vine inlay going up the neck is amazing.
Do you mean because of the nut height or the string height perhaps? Both of those you can adjust if you want of course. If chords sound out of tune when using lighter strings, it's almost certainly because you're pressing down too hard and nothing to do with the fret height.
My GOD, the Fuzz combined with that thing gives off some SERIOUS QotSA vibes. I'm loving it. I wonder how well it would hold Baritone tuning, though.. .
it would need heavier strings for baritone, its already got fairly low tension on the strings. But you could get some cool duane eddy vibes going baritone.
I just bought one, a natural, from Amazon. I was also lucky, best finish I've seen after 10 low cost guitars. I love it. It's the "Anti-Strat" which is not only fun to play, but makes my Strat more fun too. Kinda like that Dane Electro 12-string. I love that thing too :)
I was looking at this guitar for several months, and decided to buy it primarily based on your excellent reviews. Initially I thought it would be just a “knock around” guitar that I could take anywhere. Hah! Second thoughts now. It’s such a surprisingly good instrument, that I have now started again looking for a guitar I can knock around with…great stuff Ryan!
I've got the same guitar but its brand is Redid and I got the vintage sunburst finish. I cost me $189.55 + sales tax. I really love this guitars vintage tone and vibe.
Had mine about 6mon.,changed the tuners to locking tuners put a roller bridge w/rosewood base and changed the trapezoid string holder and took off pickguard and I love it.Very east to play neck...took pickguard off because pickup is so sensitive it kept picking up my pinky finger nail hitting it at higher gain settings, but it's great for jazz if amp vol set properly,oh I also put a set of .10 jazz round wounds for a nice full even and articulate jazz tone
I think you helped me make up my mind. I'm a drummer who wishes he were BB King or Buddy Guy and I've been looking for a way affordable fully hollow electric. Oh and I love P 90 pickups.
I'd probably just burry a telecaster bridge pickup under the body for a little more volume without feedback. Or I wonder if you couldn't hide a small pickup next to the bridge. I'm thinking a lipstick chrome thin-line pickup. Use a push-pull pot to activate it, and use caps and resistors to bleed the treble off, and set the volume of that pickup. Gotta be a way!
Specifically came to your video because I knew you'd put fuzz on it. This would be great for some white stripes on a budget if you're into that kind of thing.
Just got one... - gotta say: "gush-worthy" - out of the box: perfect. - nicer fretwork and action than guitars I've paid over $1000 more for - amazed at the playability ( haven't even plugged it in yet - acoustically it sounds great) - NONE of the QC-issues that most RU-vidrs have mentioned How in the hell is this possible? 🤔 🤘♥️🎸💥
just ordered one. gary clark jr por favor. this may be the ultimate budget guit. cant wait. and total budge rig : monoprice, azor, dan electro, +? hello Grote, good bye gibs, fendys, parkers gretch and so many more. Oh boy, ima gonna be rich!! great vid. p.s. love the pickguard
Hey man...where did you get this cool red Grote...I can only find sunburst on Amazon! Love the price and the Red. Gotta have one. You really seem to like it. Sounds great!
Another reviewer on YT said to be prepared to have to file level the frets. That put me off buying one of these. Is it true? Did you have to level the frets for it to be playable?
I did not. There can be a lot of quality control variations at this price point so I wouldn’t be surprised by anything. It’s always a good idea to order from somewhere that makes returns fairly easy.
thats why p90 guitars are the best an why not make a thinline L5 for that price ... i havent commented in a while Ryan ,...but the jazzy track u were started with in the end with reverb an maybe delay ?"unsure" but was inspiring an thats what its all about nice video dude those are opinions i want to here ,...the guitar an your truthful opinion ...nice vid man
Any recommendations for a hard case and gig bag to order with this? (If I were you I would make it an affiliate link and add it to the description. Both here and at the other review.)
Mine just arrived yesterday; I got the Sunburst finish. I don't have much experience with arch tops, but out of the box, I'd say the guitar I received doesn't have much mojo. It sounds brittle and isn't much fun to play. I actually put it down after less than a half hour, which is never a good sign. Still, I see potential. It is a beautiful instrument; sounded good plugged in. I want to change the strings, maybe try a slide. Who knows? Maybe it will grow on me as much as Ryan's did on him.
@@60CycleHumcast What's up, Ryan? Yeah, man. Just doesn't sound too good. Doesn't have that "warmth" that makes you not want to put a good guitar back in the case. Like I said, I don't have any experience on an arch top, though. I've read you have to adjust your playing a bit to get the best out of it. Ryan, can I ask, what strings did you put on yours? Also, got any tips/good links for adjusting the bridge? I notice it sits kind of high, definitely affecting the action. I don't know, maybe I will use it strictly for slide. Yours sounded pretty good, that way.
I havent changed the strings yet but using electric string unplugged is always going to sound thin and bright. Im going to do a video soon where I swap in a set of acoustic strings. Im guessing there will be a huge difference.
@@60CycleHumcast Cool, man. Looking forward to it. Strings aside, its a gorgeous instrument. I had it delivered to work, and everyone who saw it said it was beautiful. I'm hoping it grows on me.
I just got this guitar and see that the pole pieces can be individually adjusted. Can’t we just back them out a bit to bring them closer to the strings like on a humbucker? I’m less experienced w p90s but my instinct is that it would work the same way 🤷♂️
Grote guitars, a bargain at $ 169. Quality at a low price, unlike firefly which has too many issues that effect playability and very costly to fix and sometimes non fixable. Thanks for posting, Ryan!
Sounds like ya didn't get a "good one" from the comments. I'd def be in if my Dad didn't make guitars and I have like 34. And I also DID get a "Good One" red Ibanez Artcore afs757 archtop. It's unbelievable and I've been offered way over what I paid and even a trade for a Gretsch which I turned down. But man. That in sunburst....
