Nothing learned from Puttumala land slide that occurred years ago. Those who distrub top region of the mountain are responsible for this castratrophe. When solidified top soil is loosened, excessive water penetration happens and devastating consequences follows. Unfortunately the victims are those who are settled in the valley who have no control over the landscape alternation going on with Government's connivance. Dr. Madhave Gadgil has cautioned the authorities of the likelihood of such happenings much earlier. Some other points to be noted are that virgin (undistribed) soil is somewhat rigid and as such resistant to excessive water percolation, further it is usually covered with a very thick layer of dead leaves which further prevent water percolation to a great extent.

Rivers flow and can change their course only due to gravity. Rivers don't have a permanent course. They change. This time the flow is so high that it washed away engulfing the entire town.
True, unauthorized developments were permitted in low lying area. No construction should be permitted in the slopes and low lying area approx 1km from the river bed.

Red Alert was already sounded long back by the scientists & ecologists to the Kerala Government when more & more houses, resorts and lodges were indiscriminately being built on the higher ranges of western ghats in Wayanad and the State Govt was allowing it to happen. The maze of pipelines that was laid under the top surface of the Soil & in open trenches, for drinking water & sewage lines was loosening the top soil and making it prone to flowing away during heavy rains. This flowing away of top soil along with stones & boulders, resulted in landslides which had a cascading effect on the lower reaches of the Mountains, washing away the entire villages and causing death & destruction of the scale not seen in Kerala.
Where everyone knows that landslides happen, one has to work towards reducing the chance of having a landslide. Instead, everything is being done to have more landslides. This will continue not just in Kerala but throughout the western ghats and Himalayas.

Rampant destruction of forests and trees (Deforestation) has resulted in natural disasters like landslides and floods which are going to get worse in the coming years as the greed for commercialization (hotels, resorts, commercial establishments) and urbanization (residential layouts, houses, home stays) across the natural eco sensitive regions across Western Ghats continues. Amongst the most vulnerably dangerous regions are Nilgiris, Wayanad, Palni Hills and Idukki are the most critical rather a ticking time bomb of soughts due to unchecked rampant destruction of forests and tress by the corrupt politicians, government officials who have been granting permissions and licenses left right and center to cut chop and destroy precious irreplaceable hectares of forests for building hotels resorts layouts etc. If this freedom to mercilessly destroy the only few existing precious irreplaceable forests and hills continues in the coming time these regions will no longer exist except in few pictures and videos. *WAKE UP NOW! We learn in schools that the tree roots in a forest hold and bind soil together preventing landslides. Now with 51% of the forest lost to tea and coffee plantation, these plants don't help retain any soil.
Our Indian channels are not good in presenting proper graphics. They do not invest in technology and research. Just naming hills, and showing some google pictures does not cut it. Its difficult to understand the scale and extent of damage. There could be some aireal shots from a helicopter that could be shown to know the extent of damage etc. Poor presentation of facts ....always have to present a map and explain initially and then go to the field and correlate the info by talking to survivors in these washed out villages etc. Our news channels need to improve a lot and present the facts better.

Adani Group can speak to CM Pinarayi Vijayan and take Kerala Govt approval to transport the Boulders which have come down the mountains in Wayanad to Trivandrum, to be used in Vizhinjam Port Expansion. They should immediately pay an advance of Rs 500cr & weigh the boulder-trucks on road weighbridges en-route. Market value can be ascertained and paid to State Government later. The money can be used for immediate relief works.
