Grounded theory is one of the most widely used methodologies in qualitative research today. The concepts of grounded theory can feel complicated to wrap your head around, so we break it down into simple terms.

Grounded theory is a qualitative method that enables you to study a phenomenon and discover new theories that are based on the collection and analysis of real world data.
Unlike traditional hypothesis-deductive approaches of research, where you come up with a hypothesis and then try to prove/disprove it, grounded theory is an inductive approach where new theories are derived from the data.
The process of data collection, data analysis, and theory development happen in an iterative process. Iterative data collection and analysis occurs until you reach theoretical saturation, the point at which additional data adds no additional insight into your new theory.

Ok, firstly, the video is a very good and concise description of the grounded theory approach. Secondly, it's not perfect :) What it misses or it's not clear enough (among hundreds of other details you can find in books or articles written by Glaser, Strauss, Corbin et al): the goal. Any grounded theory research have a goal - the core concept(s)/category is not the goal, neither is the theory - but what that theory try to explain, a phenomenon of prior interest for the researcher. Also, the process of coding for GT - it's not quite trivial and must be explained in detail, in another video maybe, together with the idea of circular research and constant comparison :) A very good video, excellent for presenting this approach in a method class.... thank you :)

Great video thank you and subscribed. I like how grounded theory is being renewed in post-qualitative approaches. In fact I've found the differences between grounded theory and post-qualitative methodologies are often few in practice and philosophy. I'm writing this comment because you might be interested in viewing your final theory as an 'entanglement, 'actor-network', 'situation', or 'arena' and other such ontologies of post-qualitative researchers which can be constructed through grounded theory.

Hi there, my professor mentioned grounded theory in terms of interactionism, saying that interactionism adopts grounded theory, and under grounded theory, she said "although many believe this is a qualitative method, it is not- it is a general method" and then stumbled upon this video-- the first definition really threw me off- is it or isnt it?!
@DelveTool
@DelveTool 2 года назад
We would certainly say that Grounded Theory is very popular as a qualitative method, and that's certainly how we use and discuss it ourselves. But especially in the context of interactionism, I can see why your professor would say it's not an exclusively qualitative method. Though we would love to hear more!

How many participants do we need for grounded theory research?
@DelveTool
@DelveTool 2 года назад
Thanks for your question! In grounded theory you keep recruiting and interviewing people until you hit theoretical saturation. Theoretical saturation is the point at which a researcher has collected enough data and conducted enough analysis to feel confident that they have identified all of the relevant categories in their data. In grounded theory research, the number of participants needed for theoretical saturation varies depending on the type of data being collected and the complexity of the phenomenon being studied. You can read more about it here: delvetool.com/blog/theoreticalsaturation
@miriammwangi1520
@miriammwangi1520 2 года назад
Thanks alot for the satisfactory answer. During the lecture you talked about generalizability but in phenomenology people give their own subjective experiences which might not be similar how can we generalize peoples experience situation to other people's experiences. Please give an example on how this happens.
@DelveTool
@DelveTool 2 года назад
I’m glad that you found our answer satisfactory. The original grounded theory was developed based on the assumption that people perceive the world differently, so there is no fundamental conflict with the idea that people provide their subjective experience. Grounded theory does not assume that all people will experience a phenomenon in the same way, and often times those conflicts in experience will help you build a richer theory. I recommend reading our article on Constant Comparison Method to learn how to analyze interviews that may conflict with your developing theory: delvetool.com/blog/ccm

Can I ask why grounded theory is presented only as a qualitative methodology here? There are many established studies that use ground theory methodology, that employ quant research methods/data sets. Why do you think that grounded theory only uses qualitative methods and data?
@DelveTool
@DelveTool Год назад
We cover here the Grounded Theory originally developed by sociologist Glaser and Strauss which is a qualitative approach. We are also a RU-vid channel about qualitative analysis, so we tend to cover primarily qualitative approaches. Though we would love to read a study that uses the type of grounded theory that you are describing. Feel free to send it over!
@user-ob6nw6yk9i
@user-ob6nw6yk9i Год назад
@@DelveTool I can send over a study, but it is not rare to see grounded theory which works with quantative data. It is worth noting I think, that often the methodology is mixed method and employs both qual and quant methods. I'm sure you've probably read this anyway but this is a best practice framework for grounded theory methodology: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6318722/. "A hallmark of GT is concurrent data generation/collection and analysis. In GT, researchers may utilise both qualitative and quantitative data as espoused by Glaser’s dictum; ‘all is data’".

@DelveTool
@DelveTool 3 месяца назад
A qualitative code is a label used in qualitative research to categorize and identify themes, patterns, or concepts within textual data. These codes help researchers systematically analyze and interpret non-numerical data, such as interviews, observations, or documents, to extract meaningful insights.

Without statistical inference, what make the theory reliable?
@DelveTool
@DelveTool 2 года назад
Great question! Statistical inference, which is used to infer properties of a population based on statistics, is not appropriate for grounded theory. Instead Grounded theory’s purpose is to describe phenomena, and provide rich and deep analysis. To ensure your grounded theory is sound, do iterative data collection and analysis using theoretical sampling until you reach theoretical saturation. You can read more about this process here: delvetool.com/blog/theoretical-sampling.
