Groundhog whistle call

Woodchucks use a whistle call to sound the alarm when a predator or other threat is spotted. They don’t alarm nearly as much as other marmots, but they use their whistle enough to have earned the nickname “whistle pig” (although the yellow-bellied marmot shares this nickname in the west). Why do woodchucks sound the alarm even when they live alone? One reason may be that woodchucks usually live close to other woodchucks, and even though they are competing for resources it is still advantageous to all be on the lookout for predators. There is also fascinating evidence that woodchucks listen closely for alarm calls from other small mammals, especially eastern chipmunks (Tamias striatus), and that chipmunks may also use woodchuck alarm calls as an alert system.

This is their early-season call for mating. The males always wake up before the females and start searching for partners, but usually just find other males in the beginning, which leads to battles for territory 😆. They start doing these calls to attract mates until the season is over after a month or so

I’m glad groundhog expert like you are here to help us understand the groundhogs!! You are absolutely right! I saw two groundhogs right in front of this hole kissing each other!!! I’ll share that video soon! 😂

Puff The Magic Garden 😂. I have just researched them a lot since I’ve had them in my property like you do. This year two fox families are back with a bunch of puppies and they are taking over the yard. They are digging up a lot of groundhog holes and making them bigger for their families, so the groundhogs aren’t around as much. I see them every couple days, and they eat the veggies I leave for them, but it seems the foxes have begun to take over this part of the property for now

They can be pets also! As they're just overgrown hamsters XD with LONGER lifespans (up to 14 years in captivity with proper diet and healthcare) a licensed USDA TN ranch called "Fraizer Farms Exotics" sell hand-reared, bottle baby Groundhog pups for $750.00 ( as of 2023) includes a care/health guide and some starter pet accessories! They've been doing this over 10 years now. Can't wait to get my own next year!

@steffir9506
@steffir9506 2 года назад
It's very loud. I had a mama and 4 babies in my yard but didn't know it until a few months ago. I let the dogs out, and I saw the big dog chase something big and brown across the yard. I went outside to look, and I heard the whistle without the chatter. It was very loud and piercing. It sounded like a smoke detector only louder. I finally followed the sound to a foot wide area between our privacy fence and the neighbor's fence that I have blocked with a baby gate so the dogs can't get back there. It was a huge mama groundhog, I mean HUGE, it was twice the size of my 16lb cat. It was so strange to hear that loud sound coming from that critter! I think she was calling to her younguns, warning them of danger. She was not friendly looking at all! She looked scared, mad, and ready to fight. I have not seen any other adult groundhogs, only the 4 little ones around and under the neighbor's shed, so I don't think she was calling for a mate. They mate in February after hibernation, and their gestational period is 33 days.

Last week I heard what I thought was children screaming, we don't have full time neighbors just occasional weekend Neighbors. I went outside to see if the neighbors had arrived early for a weekend stay, and it was two ground hogs fighting or mating, I'm not sure which. One groundhog was chasing the other and jumped on its back. The one trying to get away rolled down the hill and landed against our dog fence, it laid there a bit before it got up and ran off. We have a family of groundhogs living in the hill beside our house, I see them more this time of year as they come out to eat the tender leaves on the new plants, they can strip a black berry bush in no time.

I had quite the encounter with a groundhog today. I came out of the garage and she was running down the driveway, but instead of running away from me as most animals would, she kept running right at me. I had no idea that she had decided to nest in the space between our stone wall and deck, and she came about a foot close to me at full run, and I thought she was attacking me, but suddenly she turned and dived into that space. So I got a live trap out and caught her in 10 minutes with peanut butter. She wasn't too happy at first, but I took in the garage and started playing some praise and worship music and singing to her and she seemed to love it. We finally took her to a nearby marsh land and let her go. I'm sure she was happy to be free again. I've never heard that whistle, even though we have groundhogs around us. (We are near a wooded area with a water source and fields with lots of shrubs and berry trees.) That's quite the sound they make! Oh no! I'm playing this outside at night. I hope I don't draw more groundhogs with that sound, lol!
