Hilarious! The fellow originally from Mexico @ 10:04 talks about a 'mess, what a mess we have & we have have to change things'. Then the filmmaker segues in the very NEXT scene to an exterior view of different house with muscovy ducks waddling immediately around house, no doubt crapping ALL over the area. As camera scans you see innumerable plastic buckets scattered around and weedy paths and assortmemt of lumber laying around willy nilly! Geez, you cant make up such dissonance if you had a $10,000 budget. I bet that duck crap adds a wonderful atmosphere to that locale 😕

This is amazing, I grew up with family that lived in the forest, our home was a mud-hut and I worked my self away from this and became aware of concrete house building with steel etc., which I worked hard to pay for with a 30yr mortgage. I worked at the Bank and so money was available and I now have a 2 storey building and I am still building. Now I want to go back and build a mud-hut that was my childhood days with freedom that we have. I love the coziness and the earth. Nice.

My grandmother used to live in a house just like this one up until the early 90s - made of cob and built in a south indian, traditional Tamil way. Then came this thing called “modernization” and everyone started building with concrete, plastic and other nonsense. The result is what you see today - most cities in India are an unmanaged concrete mess.

it feels like our indian ancestors all knowledge has been taken by other countries & we indians only never understood the value of our ancestors knowledge of building cob house , living simple life & eating simple organic food & their ancient learning in every manner that was kind to each & every animals .. It’s all was with us but thn we called muddy people by thn & now these people are genius. I’m really feeling so sorry for ourselves that we didn’t care their value, their approach of life & their view on everything that has purpose to live an completely organized organic life but we’re thankful to them that they left us legacy & we had our ancestors who built the lifestyle that was always encouraging entirely earthly values. I still remember my grandparents cob buildings in my village,they are still standing since 100s of yrs ..As children we lived there, played there .. cob houses were not only in my village but everywhere in indian villages we had cob houses but we were called villagers, muddy people.. should our Indian ancestors not deserve an recognization, i just question?

It is cute and bucolic, however try having chickens and ducks in most any neighborhood and the health inspector would be on you faster than files on shite! I like the alternative building materials but for chrissakes, the vast majority of people looking to build will not have access to any of these options. Cob, straw bales, or other so-called cheap materials will be stopped to maintain that local builders and banksters can get a sweet profitable piece of the action. In other words this is for wealthy people, and not for us.

cob was a primary building material in great brittian so yes lots of rain ...they had a motto a building must have good shoes [foundation] and a good hat [roof] and you will have few problems so yeas foundations with drainage makes site work a priority...Take your time with it ...install cysterns for rain water harvesting...[The water is naturally soft] cysterns that over flow to natural pools and ponds ...take a few steps up in to the home so porches covered with roofs like porticos, and earthen cement floors and tile. lastly consider a very old heat system called a gloria...a throw back to the roman hypocausts and korean ondols or they where also called crimean ovens the external hearths keep the mess of fire and ash outside the home and actually convert the house to a gentle rocket stove where for a minimal amount of wood you easily charge the structure with heat in the winters...as the mass exchanges with the inside environment low cost heat and in the summers the same gloria returns to subsoil temperatures cooling the structure and regulating humidity....

I want to learn more about this construction method. For example, what kind of structural loads does it have. In my region of the country tornados do happen. How would a cob wall withstand winds compared to other materials. I know the typical stick framed drywall "tents" that everyone builds around here don't do well at all. Would cob withstand winds better? It seems everyone that knows anything about it, lives in the northwest or Canada. I'm in the southeast US.

@@H1ST0RYWriter Thanks for the reply Marcus. The humidity is precisely why I'd want to do it. If you've ever torn out drywall from a stick built structure here, you'd understand. The wall's interiors are literally black with mold. Thanks for the link suggestion. I was looking at rammed earth, because I like the security of it against winds. But I like the simplicity of cobb. Maybe there is some way to combine the two.
@H1ST0RYWriter
@H1ST0RYWriter 5 лет назад
@@Edmund_Mallory_Hardgrove Not sure of a combo between those two. Hempcrete is actually a great way to keep humidity out of your interiors. I'm building with an earthbag foundation, then straw bale walls with cobbed exterior. I'm further north now so I need a higher R value for winter. Cleaning up New Orleans after Katrina taught me all too well how worthless it is to use fiberglass or drywall.

@keekeemyfirstcat google "rocket stove" "rocket mass heater" -- it is a woodburning stove that burns very hot and efficiently (due to an insulated stack which pulls the air through) and the exhaust is recaptured and rerouted through the mass (like an earthen bench with ducting running through it) to capture the heat before the (now cooled) exhaust finally heads up the chimney. Takes very little wood. Burns very efficiently so it is a cleaner burn. A rocket stove can be used for cooking and the same principals can be used in a rocket oven for baking, rocket water heater, rocket mass heater...

The ceiling panels (10:50) struck my eye. They look like a woven basket. Can you tell me more about this product?

I love how this video has been edited. Earthen homes are so intune with the real spirit of life and existence, we are indeed one with the earth and to build a home with hands and feet does indeed infuse the spirit of those who helped to build it. Earthen homes is definitely a trend I pray will continue to gain traction and the wide spread popularity it deserves.
