My dog is a Glen of Imaal, and he is a rare breed with only 57 registered in the COUNTRY and mines one of them. I don't think this breed gets enough recognision, and I HOPE his breed will win one day!

YES! So pleased with these results!! After the Bedlington, the Skye and Irish are my fave terriers! Think I'll be pulling for the mega-underrated Skye for BIS unless more favorites of mine turn up in the remaining groups. :D :D Go Salena!!

Eugenics applies to humans. A word chosen by a documentary maker for effect. All animal shows are about showing the best of the breeding stock. and breeding stock indicates a breed or type of animal.

Unfortunately you are mistaken. Crufts has nothing to do with breed standards and as i said, is just one dog show. So you went in for pedigree dogs yourself? Where did they come from? Was it someone that exhibits at dog shows, a real breed enthusiast or was it what is known as a backyard breeder... The single biggest contributor to the dog market worldwide, not the people showing at Crufts. Sorry if you have bad experiences with your dogs. Research is the key.

so what? it's the kennel club that actually releases the standard. But Crufts promotes the judging of dogs by their appearance and receives a lot more attention. I didn't buy the dog my parents did, had it been me I would have bought a cross breed or adopted a mongrel. My dog came from a 'someone'. The mother of my Dog won several awards at Crufts. The physical part of Crufts is great, I can't understand why you would defend the whole 'master-race/breed' part.

What are you talking about? I own a Cavalier King Charles spaniel No the dogs don't have to be from the same family. You just get a wide selection of starter dogs with desired traits from different families and breed them. Occasionally you add new dogs with similar desired traits. Remember all breeds of dogs used to look like wolves. Keeping track of family history makes it easy to avoid inbreeding. People used to selectively breed in a different way then they do today. It's much worse now.

What are dog breeds bred for then? Kennel clubs everywhere are OK with inbreeding because that is how breeds are created? Do you think they happen by accident? Proving someones dog is unhealthy is going to be a very tricky matter isn't it? If you tell someone their dog is unhealthy you better be able to prove it via a vet and then when the owners vet disagrees it's going to get really complicated. Remember that it is only the vet profession that has recently got on to this subject!

Why would i defend it? Because master-race makes no sense in dog terms. All dog shows, infact animals in general is about appearence. You have pedigree cats, horses, cows, sheep, rabbits and so on. As i said, if you want recognisable animals for various purposes there has to be a pedigree.. A record of the breeding that went in too said animal. Then there has to be a written standard that pedigree animals conform to.

So because it's about animals that makes it okay to breed a 'master race' ...I'm sorry I mean pedigree. What's sad is that so many Dog suffer horrible genetic conditions because of crufts.

'For various purposes' please, the reason the kennel club (which by the way runs Crufts) sets out breeding standards is because they enjoy making dogs look how they want them to. I don't like the complete disregard for the dog's health for their shallow desires. The kennel club was happy with inbreeding and cosmetic killings before the press found out. Crufts still knowingly lets unhealthy dogs into the competition and gives them awards. leading to the breeding of more unhealthy dogs.

please don't patronise me. You don't have to inbreed to create a breed, you can select dogs with desired traits from different families. Breeders are too lazy and self centred to do this. I'm studying biology and genetics, Inbreeding is the way to destroy a breed, it leads to infertility and a plethora of disorders. I watched this Crufts with my cousin who's a vet. She could tell instantly that many of the dogs had a problem with their gait and that many were obese Example; the fat Labrador

Look, just because Pedigree dogs exposed tried connecting dog breeders with the Nazis doesn't mean anyone is trying to breed a master race as you so dramatically put it! Firstly dogs are not a race. If you want individual breeds of dogs then there has to be a pedigree, you understand that don't you? Or do you picture armies of Rottweiler goosestepping around sometime soon? Crufts is only one dog show and dog shows just like it go on all over the world. People like pedigree dogs.

Hah! I knew you were a kid who had never really owned a dog themselves! Yes you need selected dogs for desired traits but you couldn't just keep adding random dogs if you wanted a fixed type. Total inbreeding has not destroyed breeds though has it? Hence all the whining. I'm not a fan, but thats the way things have been done to create breeds. Some of these breeds are ancient so nothing recent is going on apart from your interest.
