Counting the red grouse on a moorland is all part of the run-up to the shooting season. The knowledge gained is key to maintaining a healthy and sustainable population. Dogs and their handlers will cover the same ground year on year and the results will be compared to historical records.
BASC is the largest shooting organisation in the UK.

This is a disgrace, a disaster to the environment. How could you play such a blood ridden game and call it fun. Its taking away lives of birds that have emotions, as crybaby as it sounds. Not only this, but you are killing the predators and other animals that live in the heather moorland too just so you can shoot birds with lead-ridden bullets. This 19th century sport needs to be ridden with.

1. Depends on your opinion. 2. It's very conservation-based, so I'd be inclined to disagree. 3. I don't know, ask fisherman about his sport. 5. That is true, regardless of it sounding "crybaby" or not. 6. Not sure where you got the impression of killing off other animals, fowling involves the target birds in flight, which would be rare to have any other animals within the target area, espescially those without wings. 7. Hardly "lead-ridden bullets." People tend to shoot birds in flight with shotguns, loaded with a projectile known as "Bird shot" This, is often a shell filled with multiple small chunks of lead (smaller than buckshot, which in turn are smaller than slugs, which are single lead projectiles.), to get a decent spread over an area in the air. Differing shotgun shell types are often pioneering tech for hunting that we've reached since we started using rocks to bash other animals with. Quite an interesting subject if you're into history. 8. That also depends on your opinion. You need to bear in mind that most of the species that are hunted would be under threat if people stopped hunting and conserving the animals habitats to keep hunting them. It's like the Mitchell and Webb sketch regarding vegetarianism where David claims that "there would be more polar bears if more people wanted them for lunch." Then goes on to say; "Where are the pigs daddy? In the zoo." Implying that if people stopped eating pigs, they wouldn't be bred anymore and would become an endangered species. There's often far less support for animals that people don't have a use for/have some iconic hold within the media. Conclusion: Whilst i'm sure you feel passionate about what you believe in on the subject, I would recommend preparing your arguments/concerns so that they're less of a mash of self-proclaimed statements.

No grouse = no moor. It would be covered in conifers so look at the ‘big picture’ please.

Richard : Privately owned grouse moors bring in income. No income from grouse shooting will probably cause the moor owner to look for alternative sources of income such as conifer tree planting or sheep rearing thereby destroying the heather moor environment. Unmanaged the heather moor would deteriorate and become scrubland. Many jobs generated by grouse shooting and peripheral support businesses would be lost in regions where jobs are in short supply. This is the ‘big picture’ I ask you to consider. Any proven persecution of raptors should dealt with severely within the law.

There were grouse before people. And the climax community in upland England is Silver birch, not conifers. But there would still be some grouse Habitat. Your arguments are ridiculous.
