Those are ghost notes. You hold your fretting hand over the string(s) to mute them and with your plucking hand you hit the strings as usual.

I play bass myself, and if I'm not mistaken, the x's mean to play "dead" notes which are basically playing notes normally but not pressing down on the fret. This gives a thudding sound which can be said sounds "dead". That's my take at least.

He's muting the strings with his fretting hand, they're ghost notes.

I’ve been learning this without the ghost notes, and as i become more confident with the groove then i add the ghost notes.

hi dude, these "x" in the tabs means that you gotta play "ghost notes". You shoud search a little bit about bass ghost notes in RU-vid. I hope it was helpful, have a good practicing ✌🏻

It’s a lot of ad libbing and it’s hard to make out exactly what Marcus is up to. He mostly vamps on the low f with a pop or two on the octave and Eb, he does a little blues thing to echo the vocals on the second time through, and around the ninth time he does a high blues riff at the 13th fret
