Growing Japanese sweet potato in SoCal. This is the purple skin with white flesh. I know there are many varieties of sweet potatoes. This grew very well for me. Started from slips.

I hope you will continue to show us your traditional cooking. It’s better than watching all those world famous chefs . Also your traditional attire and lifestyle are so wholesome , healthy and peaceful. It’s very soothing watching your videos . And it's an honor to have you visit our channel, we can discuss more about our experiences in harvesting and building farms.

Thanks so much for this great video! I live in south Florida and have started growing these in my yard. I have so many that I can't keep up with them, lol. Do you know how long I can keep them in the ground before they start to go bad? My guess is that keeping them in the ground is probably the best way to store them, correct?
@breakinggreatness1010
@breakinggreatness1010 Год назад
Yes, would like to keep them in-ground, but I have gophers so I have to harvest them. Also, keeping them in-ground too long is also an issue, so be sure to harvest before they decompose or start growing again :)

@@breakinggreatness1010 thanks so much! i actually just pulled a bunch of them out of the ground. It has been about 10 months since I planted them. Some of them were starting to decompose but some were still good. I think the longest you can keep them in the ground is 8-9 months.

@@breakinggreatness1010 we have A LOT of gophers. Do you think it’s still possible for me to plant the sweet potatoes directly into the ground?

I think it's not native in Japan, it's also abundant in our backyard in the Philippines

The vegetable name does imply where it is native to (I'm learning)

@@breakinggreatness1010 Yeah that's true because we had them in Africa (Ghana) as well. We grew those and the white sweet potatoes as well. I never knew of the regular American type and the orange sweet potato until I got to America. I think it's because as people travel so are these vegetables. Also, growing up in Ghana, we learned that there were many vegetables and fruits that were introduced to the country by European missionaries. I guess as people move, they move with plants and now we have all kinds of plants in places that are not their native homes. Lastly, I think with scientific research playing such important role in agriculture, this 'migration of plants' if I may call it that, will continue for a long time.

take a tub, or shallow container, 1)add 2 inches of compost, or peat to the container 2)place the organic sweet potatoes on the compost 3)add more compost to almost cover the potatoes, but you don't need to fully cover them. 4)moisten the compost, but make sure it is not wet. 5)place the container by a bright window, or outside if your temperatures are above 55 (that's an approximation). they like it warm. 6)in 6-8 weeks snap off the shoots from the potato and place the shoots (slips) each in one jar of water and watch them grow roots. 7)after some roots develop, plant the rooted slips outside either in the ground, or in a pot. they do well in pots, but make sure it is at least 15 gallon pot. that's it.
