For people following the instructions, when he says to look out for mold and avoid fungus: Basil seeds react with water and in a matter of minutes rather than hours create a grayish mucus layer around themselves, which may look like an infection the next time you look at the seeds. This is nothing to worry about and is perfectly normal. They just look and act a bit different than most seeds in the start. :) (Try putting a few in your drink. This is harmless and common in Asia, as you then have a funny little jelly ball with a crispy seed inside to chew on.)
In Malaysia, we called it biji selasih ( basill seed) and we drank it with rose cordial , and it is a very famous drink . Its called Sirap Selasih . And yeah I am growing sweet basil from seeds, and its germinating but there is a layer of "cottonish' look on the seeding soil, but i aerate it and spray lesser water, it went off... can't wait for it to grow faster!
Thank you for the detailed video. It’s much appreciated. I have been trying to grow basil for a while and I think I’ve been under planting. Now I’m going to use more seeds see how it goes.
Rememeber, kids, vermiculite and perlite are OPPOSITES. Vermiculite is great for Holding moisture and perlite is great for Letting Go of moisture. Used for opposite purposes. The same places often sell both products. :) Often available in zoo stores too, but then in different departments as they do the polar opposites and are used in very different setups.
Your method for growing basil is spot-on. I've been using a seedling tray, and I have to say...I'm done with trays. Too much fumbling, too much transplanting, too little hydration buffer (have to water them twice a day). I used the over-seed method in a primary pot for some chives a few weeks ago, just like you're doing here with basil, and I think it's going to work out much better in the long run. Great content. Keep it up. Sharing.
Looking to grow basil indoors after enjoying the single plant from the garden this summer. Fall and winter coming fast. Will try this. Greetings from a Son of Norway in the USA.
I came home with a pack of basil seeds today and a google search landed me here. It's been 7 hours since i got home and I haven't done anything but watch your videos 😂 so much good content on your channel!
Great video! I started my own small business selling tomato, cucumber, pepper, and other vegetable plants I grow indoors this past year. My wife decided she wants to have her own part of the business growing things even though it seems like she is always working overtime at her every day job. She decided she wants to try herbs, flowers, and bushes. Also doing wood burned signs for the garden. So I set her up a station in my grow room(plenty of windows, heated, air flow, grow lights, and heat mats.) And as she wants to do that, I am the one doing all the research and preparing everything hahahaha. The only basil I have had success with from seed was this year and it came out of 3 separate tomato packets somehow. I wound up with genovese, thai, and opal...weird...but they look beautiful in the same pot now. Constantly having to clip that thing back though as its currently between 90 and 100 degrees Fahrenheit every day. I'll check out some more of your videos...keep up the good work!
@@ChristopherBrandsdal hy Christopher, I'm typing you from Serbia.me and my frienda looking your channel, you are very good.sorry,my english is not best.I have one question. I have basil,a lot of basil.and I want to have basil indor, almost is winter time.but I dont know which lamp to use.can you say me which lamp is the best for indor growing?thank you so much,buy..👋👋👋
Thanks for this, i might just try to grow from seed this winter (I'm in Montreal, Canada) My summer basil went to seed and ive been buying grocery store plants. Your last basil video had helped me a lot when i started so thanks and have a great winter!
Hi Christopher, I started mine a week ago, it seems in perfect condition for the moment. Your video is the best in the site, thank you for the entire explanation. Do you have other basil projects going on?
Great information, thank you! I love basil too, I live in New Jersey USA and September is here so I'm trying to propogate my wonderful red basil before frost. I just want one big pot so I bought the GooingTop LED grow light 6000k clip light with a timer since it had lots of good reviews. I stuck a bunch of stems into water to root and then I'll plant them under the light and see what happens. If it works I'll buy another light and plant the basil from seeds!
I do this as well, and even though they get direct sun light half of the day(in istanbul), some of them start growing taller and leave the other ones in shadow i guess. Cause the other ones look healthy but stay shorter and have less set of leaves therefore. so i need to trim the tall ones regularly, even before i let them grow as tall as yours.
Hello from Massachusetts! Just discovered your channel! Love your relaxing vibe! Just starting to learn how to grow indoors, so much to learn! Will be following your channel. Thank you!
Hello Christopher, here in Florida I have a south facing window and I have my pot of Basil in the window which has been growing wonderfully. I usually water 2 times a week because I am worries about over-watering and my plant is getting along quite great! Its been about 5 weeks
Just the thought of having to use a growing light turn me off. I don’t have the space to hang it in my living quarter. But I can appreciate what it does to the indoor plants and in low sun light region. I may not be able to avoid using it. Thanks for the video.
Christopher , Greetings from the Philippines! I like the idea of sowing a lot of seeds in a single pot. I just plant on pots coz I don't have garden soil where I live and this is just perfect. Hopefully my basil turns out as healthy as yours. I am excited to make pesto out of them.
You're right to grow them like microgreens. There is NEVER enough basil on a regular basil plant. If you're making pesto you'll need a few cups of it and any normal plant won't have enough leaves.
Very nice. I am lucky, in Australia grow all year round. Have continental (perennial) and Thai Holly is the best. Italian quick mainly used all-rounder.
Great to see you Christopher. Wow I didn't realize how little sun you get there in Norway this time of year. Your nice little grow room would be a great break from the winter gloom though ... it's really looking good in there and you'll have to give us full tour of all your plants again and see how they are doing. Here in Canada where I am we get down to about 5 hours of sunlight but can be really bright and intense and so low on the horizon can make driving painful when heading towards it. But it sure feels good through the window ..lol Take Care my friend, and always looking forward to the next one ;)
Thats what i was thinking. Would be great to see your lighting setup for that huge basil plant. It is awesome, even the color it looks like it grew on the hills of Genova.
That’s a beautiful pot of basil. Great explanation of your methods on this video. I didn’t realize how little light you get there this time of year. I will stop complaining about our “ short” 8 hours of sunlight. We are creeping up to the shortest day of the year 👏. A few more weeks and the daylight hours will begin increasing again.
Chris Good morning Can you please provide the details of the BIO GRO that you have and where you got from There are plenty of BIO Gro products on their web page and is confusing Thank you for the great video Please make a video on your grow room and how did you do it and the cose
Hi Christopher! Norwegian expat in Thailand here, I believe we are both Norwegians? Anyway, I have to grow all my European herbs indoors at all times also Heirloom tomatoes and a few other things - organic growing in a tropical climate is crazy different from home, I had to re-learn everything starting my little "Organic survival garden" here.. What I would like to know is:Do You have any experience with tomatoes growing indoors? Space, lights and so on. Thanks for any info You can provide (if possible) Great channel btw, I just found You!
Hi! Sure Norwegian here. :-) Indoor tomatoes are fun and not too hard. They need a lot of light and water. They grow super fast and taste very good. I think I have tomatoes in some of my old videos. Take a look.
I have mine in a container in the shade outside with a plastic clear lid on it. Should I bring it inside or let it stay outside in the heat? Should I take the lead off and put it in the sun?
🤩 the best looking plants...I aspire to have such gorgeous basil plants. Will this work with planting outside in a designated planter with full sunlight? I noticed when I start a plant indoors and transfer outside when weather gets warmer the plants go through a confused stage, or is the time change from night to day creating the delay in growth?
Hi Christopher! Great video, I hope you're keeping well. I tried your dense planting method and everything is going great, the canopy is really thick and the plants are about 3 or 4 inches tall now! However, I've just checked the plants tonight and there's aphids all over them. I know that aphids are easy to get rid of on single plants, however the density of the Basils in the pot is going to make getting rid of them a nightmare. Have you had to deal with this? Do you have any tips? Thanks and stay safe!
Hi Chris, Which temperature do you need indoors to grow basil? Also how often do you put the basil under the light, every day or else? and for how long? Thanks.
Hello, first thank you for this amazing video! Second I would like to know where you got that pot for the basil because it looks really beautiful. Do you have a link or something? Thanks and keep it up :D
Assuming your talking about the spider farmer sf1000 are sf1000d I’m currently using 3 in a 4/2 tent witch works well for herbs that don’t flower and fruit. But when it comes to fruiting are budding they fall short. Wish I knew that before buying 3 of em.
Thank you for the great video. I followed all the steps (aside from making my own soil) and got great germination and healthy plants. Good sun by a window. I’ve also used a grow light, but my plants are not growing. They’re healthy but not growing. Any suggestions?
Thanks Chris for the detailed info. I am going to try to fertilize like you do. Question, since you have so many exotic plants growing indoor, have you tried growing moringa tree on a pot? If you do, please share a video. Thanks!
Hi Christopher, ques... I started my basil indoors. I'm in Florida but I don't have a window where I can place my plant and get sufficient lighting for it. The basil sprouted in about 10 days but for the past couple weeks it has not been growing anymore. Do I need to keep my led grow light on constantly? And should I fertilize ever time I water at this stage? The sprouts are only about an inch tall.
I dont understand how did you grow so many plants in that container? did you pull some out? or most of them are under the big ones? I planted a container just like you did, and like you say - 10 days late its like touching rock but it looks like most of them are not going to grow and live well
what happened? am on the same boat: day 20, the canopy looks really good but worried that container is too crowded and that most of them may not grow. please tell me what steps did u follow and what happened. thanks a lot
@@krishnapunyakoti643 I grew a lot of basil the last 6 months in different conditions and containers.. I wouldn't recommend growing in such a way if you care for efficiency most of the seeds in such growing conditions will just go to waste since only a few will grow a lot, and will cast a shadow in the little ones which will stun them till they die.. I'd grow 2 plants in the same size container.. 5 tops in worse case scenario.. the method shown in this video is the easiest, since out of 100 seeds, some will survive and thrive but its definitely not an efficient way to grow basil
My basil stopped growing after an inch in length. I was either under or over watering, probably. Moved it to a self watering pot and it still won't grow. But it won't die, either. Should I just start over again?
I would like to germinate my basil in the warmth of my grow tent but it is in a 18-6 light cycle for other plants is it ok to germinate under lights. A good answer to this question has been elusive. Anyone have an opinion? Thanx.
How much distance in inches do the grow light spider farmer 1000 and the top of the basil plant need to be and how many hours a day do you need to have the lights on? and what percentage of intensity do I need to set. thank you for the advice
Hi Christopher thanks for all these videos. I'm at day 14 and my basil are kinda stuck at the stage where they only have 2 leafs they stopped growing. Did I stunted there growth somehow? any suggestions?
Be careful with manure in your compost because most farm animals are on de-worming medications that can kill your friendly worms. Love your videos but you need a vacation with your family here in Augusta Georgia USA. It's going to be 78 Fahrenheit here on Tuesday.
I don't think that's a problem with the local product I use here, but might be a large problem in larger productions I guess. Great point. Oh boy I would LOVE to take my family there right now. We have two feets of snow, and it's getting down to -4f next week. Brrrrr!
@@ChristopherBrandsdal my grandson is attending university of Edinburgh and it's way too cold in Scotland for us. Let us know if you ever get to come this way. Winter is a terrific time for golf here. Wonderful food too.
Hi there from Egypt.. Thank you for the video.. Those are great looking basil plants right there. I have a question. I have tried growing basil several times but failed. The basil sprouts and grows to about 1 inch having between 2-6 leaves. Then it stalls and stops growing completely. I dont know what i am doing wrong. I grow it indoors next to a window and it gets strong sunlight all day long. For the soil i use a mix of flower mix and coco coir.
@@ChristopherBrandsdal SOL == shit outta luck. Genevieve, i grow basil (Genovese and Thai) in Norway purely by window light. I'd recommend a grow light eventually though.
Please advise on what brand of seeds you re using Also how can we get those lights but i want it to take the energy during the day from the sunlight and not to use my electricity
