Gooseberries are one of my favorites, I create cuttings from Gooseberry bushes by pinning the lower branches to the ground with a rock, the part of the branch which is pinned to the ground will sprout roots, once that happens cut the branch off from its mother plant and then you got a new gooseberry plant.

We are happily growing Red Lady muscadines, Southern blueberries and raspberries. How tolerant are gooseberries of heat with humidity? It's a rare day between late April and late September that's cooler than 38 degrees Centigrade with humidity below 90 percent. The best tomatoes tolerant to our area are Juliet, by the way.
@csgowoes6319
@csgowoes6319 2 года назад
Gooseberries do fine in my climate where it's similar. The plant seems incredibly drought tolerant, at least the established one I have, It fruits quite early in summer, early July I seem to remember, and then it's done, so usually doesn't get hit by the worst of the heat, though did last year to no ill effect. Oh, and I don't water it at all. Same for the josta berry I have, but definitely not for raspberries and currants, which I have struggled with.
@i2ndsight
@i2ndsight 2 года назад
@@csgowoes6319 So, if it has 90 percent humidity and rains every night all spring, summer and fall, would it be too wet for gooseberries? We have high heat AND brutal humidity.
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg 2 года назад
Gooseberries are generally found in zones 3 to 7. They can cope with heat but in these situations are best grown in the shade, or at least somewhere that gives them shade during the hottest time of the day. The high humidity raises the risk of disease, so make sure there's good air circulation between plants and within the gooseberry bush itself - through proper pruning to keep it open.
@i2ndsight

@@GrowVeg How humidity and rain tolerant are gooseberries? We are blessed by lots of shade. All my berries are growing in the shade. I'm attracted to gooseberries because they are shade tolerant. Amazing info! We planned and planted both raspberries and thornless blackberries down in the fruit garden. Last year was our first summer and crop. A goodly amount of raspberries…and a whopping 16kgs of blackberries! All from around 6 plants! My freezer is still full! Which is good because this summer the fruit arrived..but we’re all dry and seedy. It was a really weird year weather wise. All tied in now and I am waiting for next year! My gooseberry plants weren’t happy. Several died off and I’ve been left with a single green one. But no fruit. It’s obstinate! I grew real passion fruit last year….and again had hundreds ! Wonderful! I’m enjoying the different fruits I can grow here in northern Portugal 🇵🇹!

You mentioned that taking grapevine cuttings is similar to those of currants, but I'd like to get more information please. I currently have one Concord grape vine and one Muscadine vine. Would I use the same process as that for currants? Do I have to wait a year or more for the cuttings to be ready to plant? They were originally sold as bare root plants, and they grew prolifically in the first year. How long does the cutting method for propagating grapevines take before they can be planted? Do you recommend the Concord or the Muscadine? Thank you from my tiny garden!

This web page gives a great summary of propagating grapevines. Most can be propagated by hardwood cuttings, as completed for the currants, but the Muscadine cannot be propagated this way apparently, so other methods can be used for this variety. Excellent video, will get round to doing this on my own bushes very soon :) Grateful to anyone who can help me with the below Qs: 1 - Is it possible/recommendable to make multiple cuttings from one single branch (e.g. a longer red-currant plant with only one stem)? 2 - I have a medium-sized pot filled with raspberries that I dug up and potted last Winter, and the plants are strong. Back when I potted them up, I also added one red-currant cutting for good measure and it also took. In Autumn it was looking fine, but hadn't grown so much. I'd like to give the red-currant the best chance at thriving, so should I: A) Leave them together in the one pot B) Try to extract the whole red-currant plant including roots C) Take a cutting or two Thanks!
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg 2 года назад
You can take multiple cuttings from a single stem, but I wouldn’t want to completely decimate your one redcurrant stem if the plant is still establishing. I would try and fine a more established redcurrant to take cuttings from if possible. For the redcurrant in amongst your raspberries. I would try to extract and replant it, particularly if the plants are all currently leafless and dormant.

Liam. Get that Currant planted up separately. Maybe, pinch out the growing tip on that single stem, when it comes into bud this Spring. The plant will become more Bushy (in this year's growth.) And in the Autumn, take a few side stem cuttings. They do great in water, re rooting them. See above comment I answered re Black Currants. Applies to all Currant propagation. 😎

Many thanks for all of the advice in this film. Blackcurrants and gooseberries are amongst my favourite things from the garden. We have very little space and so need to grow many things in containers. I have 2 blackcurrant bushes that appear to be growing well, there is however a problem that I need to sort out as soon as possible. Late summer saw both blackcurrant bushes stripped of their leaves in very little time. I was advised that this was due to sawflies but have yet to see evidence of any creatures living on the plants or in their soil. Assuming that sawflies are the problem can anyone advise what I should do to ensure that the current bushes are not attacked again this year? Many thanks in anticipation of your assistance. There is little nicer than blackcurrant sorbet at the end of a summer meal!

I've been considering taking some cuttings of wild blackberry plants from around where I live. It's unfortunate that I don't think I'll be able to find a sunny enough patch for them- it would be wonderful to have some easily available blackberries, which the deer don't seem to eat. The wild blackberries are also particularly tasty, even though they are much smaller than store bought blackberries.

Wild blackberries are incredibly tasty. I imagine they would cope with a little shade, as they are generally such vigourous plants.

You cam bend a blackberry stem and bury the tip in a hole then peg the stem down and pile soil around it. Doing this in August will usually result in roots having formed on the tip by the following Spring . You can then sever the cutting from the main plant dig it up and pot it on.

Can you grow these plants from seeds or do you need to use cuttings?
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg 2 года назад
Yes, you can grow them from seed. It's just that cuttings are a lot quicker at establishing and producing a fruiting plant.

Black Currant Cuttings do great in a bucket of Water ! Just snip off those low hanging branches in Spring, (you don't want 'muddy' low growing fruit touching the ground. Or prune off that top growth after harvest. And shove that in Water. These cuttings will be super roots say in six months. In Spring, Summer, or Autumn... Will give you loads of Blackcurrant Bushes really quickly! A Win, win. (Do change the Water in warmer months, as it goes a bit pond like !) If in colder months, just stuff that Bucket of Cuttings down the side of the house, shed, or garden. Soon you will have loads of Fruit. Quicker than cuttings in soil. Promise. 😉

when should I start feeding my blueberry cuttings?
@GrowVeg

I would wait until you separate them out and put them up into their own pots. Set them into acidic potting mix (ericaceous potting mix). They probably wouldn’t need feeding on potting on for about another two months.

Strawberries are a great place to start - see our video on that. Raspberries pretty low-maintenance too. Blueberries great, but you do need acidic soil, or at least to grow them in pots of acidic potting mix. We have videos on those too.

@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg 2 года назад
I only have muntjac deer in my garden, which aren't a huge nuisance. I guess if they were a problem you'd need to grow your fruits in a fruit cage, to physically bar them from nibbling.

What I do not understand is why would you bother disinfecting your tools if you put the cuttings into DIRT anyway? Is the dirt also disinfected(heat)? Or do you leave the cuttings a few minutes or hours be before you push them in, so they can form some protective layer?
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg 2 года назад
It's really all about avoiding the spread of plant diseases, which may be on one plant but not another. So you're just making sure the cut is totally sterile. I know it then goes into the dirt, but bare dirt is less likely to have specific plant diseases in it.

The method for propagating blackberries is slightly different, as they need to be fresh canes. Here's some handy advice on this: www.gardeningknowhow.com/edible/fruits/blackberries/propagating-blackberries-cuttings.htm And some advice on dealing with their pests: www.gardenfocused.co.uk/fruitarticles/raspberries/raspberry-pest-disease.php

The cane fruits like raspberries may spread a little, but you can easily just pull out any canes that pop up away from where you want them to grow.

Do raspberries grow in sub-tropical areas like Louisiana? Help please. Tks. Strawberries, Blackberries, Blueberries all grow just great here, but not sure about raspberries.
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg 2 года назад
If blackberries grow well, then I reckon raspberries should grow well too. But check for varieties that are suitable for Louisiana. Plants should fruit within about three years of planting.

Is Frost a problem for the cuttings ?
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg 2 года назад
Light frosts are fine. The reason to keep pots of cuttings under protection if possible is just to stop the potting mix from freezing solid for weeks on end. But the occasional frost is absolutely fine.

@@GrowVeg Thank you. I am from Germany , the region where the river Rhein and Mosel met and the Riesling (wine) grows, its so mild here we have not had frost yet. I still have the option of putting my cuttings into the cellar to protect them from the worst. Frost for a week or more is still possible but very, very unlikely since my hardiness zone is closer to 8 than 7! Cheers Nik

I’ve got some black raspberries in my yard. I don’t know if the previous owner bought them, or if they volunteered, but I’m definitely going to get some cuttings going this spring. I want to transplant them to a more convenient location; I did not know I would need to give them a year or more to be ready for that! I would think in zone 6, if I do them early enough this year, they will be good by next spring? Or do you think I’m looking at closer to fall 2025 or spring 2026?
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg 6 месяцев назад
Raspberries are usually propagated by runners, which can either be potted up and grown on or just transplanted to where they are to grow immediately (if they have a bit of root to them). They may fruit next year.

Professional propagators use parafilm to wrap cuttings of plants that are not super easy to root, such as blueberries. (Gooseberry and currants are super easy, so no need for parafilm.) Parafilm keeps air through and moisture locked in, and it allow buds to penetrate when they send out leaves. See #jsacadura youtube channel.

Do gooseberries and currants need full sun? I have a slightly shaded spot in the garden and was wondering what would be good food to grow there.
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg 24 дня назад
If the area is quite open with good airflow, then a part shady spot can work well for these fruit bushes. But airflow is important to avoid fungal problems from stagnant air, which you can sometimes get in areas under trees etc.
