If you save the water you started your willow in you can use it as a all natural root hormone for starting your other trees! It’s all I use now!

Oddly enough, the best result I have achieved when rooting in water was with an old Kambucha bottle. Not sure if it was the old content of the bottle or the fact that it blocked out light.

everyone of them will root, use a kitchen paring knife and just scrape the outter layer of bark off the bottoms from cut tip up about 3-5 inches, making sure you have at least one "node/joint" of the trunk close to the bottom. The outter bark won't allow roots to form, you have to remove it, and so scraping it off, or razor blade thin cut all the way around and then just peel it off. roots will form in usually bout 2 weeks, just by sticking them in the ground and keeping them watered or by putting them in a water-wet location or in the bucket
@marklee81

Willow is actually a good source of the root hormones that you could use to grow the other trees. Idk if you can just add the sticks to the same water or if you need to make "willow water" like other people do or not.

I'm glad I found your comment I was about to tell him the same thing the reason that Willow is working so well is because the willow itself is kind of a hormone just as this gentleman said add the other trees that you tried to the same water with the Willow and you might find that they will root as well

What kind of trees to plant? Do all trees get along? Are some invasive or harmful to certain habitats?
@TXLoneStar_

This is what has worked for me..took cuttings from tree sucker branches with bark still green (6-10 inches long), scored the first 2 inches of the base, removed all leaves except for top pair, dipped ends in water and then in rooting hormone powder, and put into individual 24 oz cups. I used an aquarium pump (not required, but had one) with air stones on mine and had signs of root buds within a few weeks. I didn't use clear or opaque cups because they can increase the chances of algae growth. The trees I propagated were Red Oak, Arizona Ash, and Red Maple. Much easier and faster than from seed. Good luck on your barrier tree fence.

First, gonna say I'm not an expert. But I have grown and cloned many types of plants. One trick that would probably work better for the hardwood conifers is to take a knife to the base of the stick and remove a thin layer of the outer bark about 3-4 inches in length. Removing the outer layer of bark will make it easier for roots to grow. As for rooting hormone human saliva is surprisingly an excellent aid in the development of roots. (Use gloves if you think Ewwww). Also, instead of just throwing them in water, place them in a pot with a mixture of bark, peat and perlite. Then water and place and tie a plastic bag over the cutting. Leave for several weeks then slowly begin a cycle of bag tied bag loosened to adjust the cutting to the reduced humidity. After the several weeks gently pull on the cutting to test for roots. Again, I am definitely not an expert but I have had much success with other hardwood plants with this method. If anyone reading this has better knowledge to refute my statements or add to it, please feel free! Thanks and good luck :)

I purchased the Amazon Austree (willow) deal last year in the spring...they came as sticks, too. I placed them in plastic drinking cups in the house for about 6 weeks. Nearly all rooted. By the middle of summer last year they were 3-4 foot tall. I drip irrigated them. Fast forward one year to the middle of this summer. They are nearly dormant. Not really growing. Some are dying. Some are turning yellow. I want to say that out of about 75 I have 65 still alive. Other problem is they are spindly and offer little to no privacy whatsoever. They will not be the type tree I need for a windbreak or privacy. I also planted about 75 hybrid poplars last year the same time and planted them the same time. They were sticks also and rooted in plastic drinking cups. I put about 10 in each cup and maintained the water level for about 6 weeks as well. Some of them are now 8 foot tall, full and healthy looking. I would much rather have 150 hybrid poplars then 1/2 willow. By the way, I've planted hybrid poplars in other properties I've owned. I went by to look at some I planted 8 years ago and they are 50 foot tall and completely form a solid privacy line. I planted those 5 foot apart. The willows I planted 3 foot apart and am sorry I wasted my time and money. I'll be planting more poplars right next to each willow this fall.

One thing I have heard about hybrid poplar is that they grow so fast that flaws and weak points develop in the trunks, and that it is dangerous to let them grow to 50ft near property: They are prone to breaking in windstorms.

As someone who is just kind of... screwing around, playing without a real plan, seeing what sorts of plants I can get to grow where... ...Willow is a lot of fun. The mature trees grow fast and you can use even small cuttings from their branches to clone more. They grow wild around here. No shortage of willow cuttings for me. They're pretty good, aesthetically speaking, too. If I had space to waste I'd put them all over. People say you can use willow cuttings soaked in water to induce rooting in plants that won't otherwise root from cuttings, too, but I haven't managed to do it yet. There are variables. Dice up the willows or not. Boil the water or not. Score the "target" plant or not. Try it with different plants, of course. I'll see. If you have any success with any kind of conifer I'd be surprised.

Willow trees don't require any rooting hormone, in fact some people make rooting hormone from willow trees. Willows will even root in the ground, they usually grow by rivers and lakes. I have also tried rooting other trees from cuttings but only the willows have been successful every time. The best way to get other trees to root is to do air layering before taking the cuttings.

In eastern colorado out in the dry sandy plains (bad soil) i have found that if you sprinkle a thin layer of aged compost and cow manure around the base of the tree on top of the ground and then water over it every other day or two that it really accelerates the growth of the Chinese elm, sort of wakes it up buds start popping out and leaves turn darker green,its like the tree can't grow fast enough,by sprinkling the compost and cow manure over the bare spots of the ground the tea it creates through watering has triggered any root suckers that could grow up to be a tree to really take off fast

I've heard that propagation only works on stalks that don't have bark yet -- so the pines you had would never work. I've heard pines are possible but you have to find the growing tip of a primary branch & use the part that hasn't developed bark yet. I've heard similar about cottonwood & it seems like a rule of thumb. Your willow stalks were green-skinned -- no bark, probably why they worked so great.

I used large branches, and part of a cut from a heavy branch which was approximately 4" in diameter. The 4" heavy branch did better for me than the long, larger branches. Reason why I'm asking when I was younger a branch broke off of one of our trees was roughly for in around and maybe 9 ft long or so and I shoved it in some mud and it grew to a massive tree. Mind you it was next to our pond so it always had water. My thoughts if I can get a big Branch to grow it won't take as long to get big and put off shade
@DaveWirth

1. No, they don't have to be a small branch. 2. I saw a website where they used branches about 6' tall and 2" in diameter, and they grew fine. One thing is that i think you want it to be a relatively "new" branch. I'm not sure, but if it's an older branch then it's less likely to grow roots????
