Growing a Greener World Episode 901: Stone Barns Center & Blue Hill 

Coming to you from 2022, summer, we're headed for food supply chain issues! The drought has really taken a toll on everything, the excess heat is baking the water out of the soil and crops are failing. Time to grow your own food in your own yard... get growing, folks!

Doing what I can to make my life better in MIND, BODY and SPIRIT. Gardening is my way of life. My heart is smiling at the programs you share with us. I do have HOPE that our world will be a better space with the help of everyone, especially the younger generations. Namaste to one and all.

I never thought my mouth would be watering listening to someone talk about carrots and parsnips... SO happy I found this channel!! Hopefully I will have more success in the garden growing what wants to grow instead of what I want to eat!

Thank you Joe for a great show. As a vegan I'm well aware what a harmful impact animal farm factories are having to our lakes and land. The animal cruelty is something most people don't want to think about, but a few meatless meals a week would greatly improve our earth and health. My parents had a fine dining restaurant many years ago and they grew many of the vegetables they served to their customers. What they didn't grow they went to local farms and bought bushels full of produce in WI. Thank you again Marie

This is beautiful! I wish it were available at a more affordable price point. We always hear about how we should all be eating healthier but food deserts exist in many areas across America. The best foods for us seem to cost so much more. Imagine in school lunches followed this model!! You eat what was gathered from the garden that morning. Things would be so different.

This is an amazing farm growing organic and is achievable by many farmers today, willing to change. Thank you for showing this. I am trying to convince farmers to change their practices of spraying. Growing food, packed with nutrients, has much more intense flavor. I hope more will follow this model.

Just LOVE the story about the guy throwing the pesticide truck off the property before he even stepped foot in the door! As a member of The Florida Native Plant Society, l'm struck at how many people refuse to have that kind of "brass". For instance, the University of Florida practically begs people to plant native plants. Then every govt building you drive by is planted with things from the other side of the globe, of NO beneficial use to any native insect. No insects, no birds.

I had trouble reconciling the idea of Blue Hill inspiring the country to local food and 4 hour, $250 tasting menus. They had no qualms mentioning that they buy all of the produce from these local farms for this 1% consumption, which means the same "specialty crops" are not available to the local community. The assumption seems to be similar to the failed idea of trickle down economics. This Herculean undertaking does not showcase how accessible local food can be to the general population; it makes it appear complicated and elitist. Other segments of the local food movement, like CSAs, make produce available to the general public in an affordable and accessible way. Often they offer recipes and a new veggie or two to challenge people's plate. It is great that Blue Hill supports local farms. But beyond their little bubble and influence on other high end restaurants, there is little added value to the diet of the general population and no way to feel that this movement is accessible to them.

Economics student prefers economic fantasy to reality? Economics is there to remind us how little we actually know about what we imagine we can do. Feeding $250 4 hour meals to the 1% of the 1% and believing you can take that model to the world is fantasy. Count yourself lucky you get to be where you are and do what you do. It probably couldn't happen anywhere else.
