‪@cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm‬ Growing cut flowers in zone 8b, Scotland.
In this video we look at growing salvia viridis, also known as annual clary sage. We will look at sowing the seeds through to harvesting the flowers for arranging. It's a fantastic flower to grow for either enjoyment in your garden or for use as a cut flower in arrangements.
This video will answer your questions such as:
How do I sow salvia viridis seeds?
When should I sow them?
How do I space salvia viridis?
Do I need to feed them?
Do they need support?
Do I need to pinch them?
Are they cut and come again?
How do I condition them?
Are they good for arranging?

I have a great slug catching tip to share..... After weeks of nightly damage to my dahlias, I decided to take action! I noticed that the peanut butter I put in the mouse traps was attracting slugs, so last night I smeared a piece of cardboard with peanut butter and placed it in my dahlia bed. I went outside around 10pm to find over 20 slugs munching on the feast! I dispatched them promptly. So tonight I'm putting 8 more traps out.
@cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm
I have never heard of using peanut butter as slug bait! Great tip Ingrid, thanks for sharing. Slugs have definitely been more of a problem this summer with all the rain and constant damp conditions.

You make the best flower bouquets that I have seen anywhere, Catherine. I adore them all; they are just so pretty! Thank you so much for this very informative video, especially the temperature requirement needed for the salvia seeds to germinate.🌱🌱💚🌿
@cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm
Thanks so much, that’s really kind of you to say 😊 I am glad you found the tips on growing salvia helpful. They have definitely been one of the top flowers this year. I have been giving them a cut back this week so will see if we get a good second flush. Might need a bit of sunshine first though!

Thank you for this video. This was my first year growing Clary Salvia and I found it nice, but not sure I loved it. I used it in my bouquets and for drying. After seeing your bouquets I decided that I do indeed need to grow it again next year! I love the pink best!

Thanks so much for watching. The pink salvia is lovely too. I think when it grows well it is stunning and it does have nice strong stems to arrange with too. I hope when you try it again next year it does really well for you.

Thanks for watching, I will have to do a short on that later in the year when they have bloomed. I do have a seed saving video but unfortunately didn’t have salvia as one of the ones I showed in that.

Very nice tips Beautiful bouquets I like growing flowering plants. I wish I could grow so many flowers to make bouquets. I mostly like to see flowers blooming in my garden.
@cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm
Thanks so much for watching and I am glad you enjoyed it. Yes that is the only thing growing flowers for florists and customers that they all get cut and you don’t have them to just enjoy. This year I have been planting up a few more containers so I do have some flowers just to enjoy in the garden too.

Great video Catherine Grew this Salvia first time this year and love it Thanks for all the extra tips Will dry it also Cheers for the Comeragh mountains Ireland Sharon
@cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm
Thanks so much for watching this week Sharon. I don’t know what it’s like with you but we have had a month of non stop rain and very little sunshine. It has definitely taken its toll on the flower patches but the salvia is one flower that has done really well despite this so it’s going on my favourites list!

Love your videos , so much information I really appreciate it 🌸 I’m going to give this a go in February it’s so pretty! When you succession plant, how do you plant them out? Do you plant them all out at the same time? Seeing as there’s just two weeks between sowing them? 🌸
@cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm
Hi, thanks so much for watching this week. For the succession sowing no they don’t all get planted out at the same time. In late Feb/early March sowing they would get planted out late April here. The mid March sowings would grow on in the greenhouse and get planted out early May. By late March/early April I would do a batch indoors that would get planted out later in May. Depending on the weather I would do another batch in later April inside or if soil warming up direct sow outside and then probably one more direct sown outside in May. Sometimes holidays, family life mean that things get busy and you miss a batch but overall you get a few small succession batches planted out at different times.

Great video very clear and informative. Would love similar videos on cut flowers. Do you grow lisianthus or too cold? Thanks
@cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm
Hi, thanks so much for watching. I am glad you enjoyed this weeks video. My aim is to keep working through the different flowers I grow doing videos like these. Sometimes it takes a while to get them ready to go as I like to film the whole process from seed sowing to harvesting! The ones I have done so far are in the playlist on my channel: mini series all you might want to know about growing individual cut flowers. Unfortunately for me it is too cold for Lisianthus here. Have you had any success growing it?

Maybe i missed it, but did you mention when then best growth stage is to cut for a bouquet?
@cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm
@cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm 6 месяцев назад
I cut salvia once the bracts are fully deeply coloured. When they first come out the bracts are a bit more muted in colour and not ready. If drying the flowers I wait until the flower bracts are fully coloured and the stems are stiffer.

Great Video, thank you! I've just lifted my ranunculus and they are drying nicely. Not sure whether to replant Autumn or Spring given the changes in climate we have been seeing lately? Maybe I'll do half and half to give the best chance. Did the Arum Lillies sprout away?
@cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm
Hi, the arum lillies are doing fantastically in their pots and growing away. Can’t wait to see if they flower next year. Thanks so much 😊 Thanks for watching this week. The salvia has done super well this year despite the weather we have been having. I think with how things have been the last few years here I am going to pre sprout mine late winter next year and not do an autumn batch. Half and half is another good idea though so you are at least guaranteed some if the autumn ones are lost x
