I’m surprised you guys don’t have frost blankets to cover some of your rows. One thing we do in Maine is if we r gonna get an early frost, we’ll cut the tops off the beets and hill the bulbs to cover them. Once it warms up again they’ll produce new growth and continue to grow.

Thank you for this video. It really helps newer gardeners like me when we see that things don’t always work out even for the most experienced gardeners. I just planted my beets last week and they are sprouting. I’m very excited. I wish you better luck with your beets this year. I wouldn’t have eaten something that purple as a kid without holding my nose. However, as an adult, roasted beets & sweet potatoes are something I look forward to every year.

There is a school of thought about not thinning beets because they tend to push apart anyway as they grow and you just harvest the bigger ones and let the smaller ones to keep growing. I tried the golden beets and my husband who doesn’t like beets likes these golden ones. I am going to try the no thinning method.

Lot works great .I live in the uk and we usually don't thin them out as they do push each other outwards as they grow .I do thin mine sometimes and I transplant the thinning and they grow on very well

😝😝 I can attest that beets taste like dirt! 😂 But, my family loves them and so they get to go into the garden. Now, Hollis, we get to teach you something. Direct sow to start with. When your soil is ready, use a soft ball to make a slight dent in the ground. That's your beet spacing. 1 seed in the center and just give it a tiny poke into the ground. Now, do NOT thin your seedlings! There are a few veggies that actually do better when they have a friend. Beets come in pods because that's the way they need to grow together. You can start 'thinning" when they reach close a little larger than a quarter for baby beets, and then let the rest go. You can usually get 3 pickings from beets doing it that way.

I love all of your advice and very informative knowledge of gardening. I just want to add on to what you mentioned about saving your back: raised beds. I don’t mean your typical raised beds of edging with soil. I’m talking about the tall raised beds. They really help your back, and just make the whole experience much easier. I know because I also have a large traditional ground garden, not as large as yours 😅 I keep my tall raised beds close to the house for the greens, and root veggies that I harvest regularly.

I have watched you get your ground ready for the last couple yrs and wow the dirt looks really good, all that tender loving care🤗🌺 thank you so much for sharing all your information, I learn something every time. The one thing I really appreciate is seeing how you start your seedlings, no greenhouse, everything is started outside, so I did that and it works, and I will from now on, my seedling stems seem to be stronger than in grown with heat mats and lighting, anyway that’s what I have noticed, I am doing it again with my fall plants here in VA. I will use my greenhouse for hauling the potted ones inside should weather get bad. Thanks again

It’s sad to lose such a beautiful crop but you’re right, all you can do is move ahead and learn from the experience. Have you considered switching to raised beds? It’s a lot easier on your body for planting and maintenance and makes it easier to protect crops from weather if you need to.

Just wanted to let you know that the golden beets are much more milder than the red. I don’t like the dirt flavor, but the golden has less of the earthy and bitter flavor. They are better when roasted as well. There is more of something in the red than the golden beets that give them the strong earthy flavor. I learned this from a homesteading channel I watched. I can’t remember which one though. Just thought you might like to try it.😊

Weird, those beets (pronounced kiojja) are grown here in northern Italy all year long and they usually survive the frost. Some leaves will do what you have seen, but the plant will continue to grow if you leave them in the ground.

I was just thinking about this. You're on your knees planting the baby plants anyway - would it not be just as easy to direct sow the seeds instead of having to up-pot them in between? Most farmers I watch don't cut off the extra seedlings and let the beets grow in clusters, pulling the largest so the others have room to grow. Beets are delicious roasted, and I also love them boiled with butter, salt and pepper. Harvard beets are especially good, too, but maybe not if you're watching your sugar intake. They're a super healthy food, so I hope you enjoy them now!
