I'm north of houston in magnolia we have blackberries growing wild everywhere

Are they the late April/early May fruits with insanely prickly vines? If so, they may be Dewberries, and honestly, Dewberries are so much tastier than Blackberries! I have both, and I love using the two in different ways.

In your Instagram post on blackberries, you stated "Blackberries don't need pruning and you only need to prune dead canes". While technically true, it is also true that blackberries and bear more with careful, judicious pruning to create more lateral branching. Check out any commercial blackberry operation. The pruning is simple and can be done by any homesteader.

I wonder if my accidental habits create my own lateral branching. My dogs tear through the patch chasing off cats, and so do I. I'd bet we're breaking canes in such a way that they are able to produce lots of branching and fruiting without intentional intervention. Good to know, thanks! Maybe I'll intentionally prune half the patch's new canes this summer to see if I get the same yield across the board or not.

Enjoyed your video. Early in the video said they only produce once ? Most probable that I wasn’t listening but is that correct? My blackberry is on its second season and first blooming/blackberry making season. Do I need to replace the bush after this season and can you clone/transplant blackberry bushes? I live west lake Travis Austin area. Loved your video

Great question! No, you don't have to replace your bush. I've had the same plants for going on almost 10 years! Additionally, a single plant has multiplied into a large patch because of my location and infrequent mowing habits in that area. New canes pop up each year from the roots, and this is why you should never have to buy any more plants. New canes harden over winter and then will only flower and fruit once in spring before dying at the end of the year as the new canes are growing. Most people have these types of blackberry varieties. Since filming this video, I've also grown a large patch of Primocane varieties which have been bred for more abundant yearly yields. I really like Prime Arkansas 'Freedom" for my area if you want to research that variety. Primocanes will produce 2-3 times in a year (spring and fall with sometimes a summer crop if watered well) before dying (but the new canes still replace the old every year).

Do you recommend allowing it to fruit right away the first year or waiting a few years before allowing it to fruit?
@TurnYourHeadandScoff
@TurnYourHeadandScoff Год назад
I hope I don't over complicate this answer. If you plant in fall, then the roots have time to grow for at least 6 months before the vine fruits. In that case, I would let it fruit because it's probably strong enough to support itself. If you plant in spring right when it's flowering, then the it would be kind to remove the flowers so the plant can put energy into growing roots (which is more difficult in spring than fall/winter).

I am new to your channel. I live in katy and have a 2 year old thornless black berry bush. It just started producing fruit this year. However the berries are not sweet. Is this normal? Will the berries be sweeter with the age of the bush?
@TurnYourHeadandScoff
@TurnYourHeadandScoff 2 месяца назад
So, I have a few options for you to consider. Either the berries are not sweet because they are water logged from rain or over watering during ripening, or they are too tart for your preference. 1. If they are watery and tasteless, then the recent rains may have overwhelmed the berries, and you can avoid watering while we have seasonal rainfall. 2. If they are too tart, then the variety may be a less sweet variety, they may be getting too much shade, they may not be getting enough water (less likely because of our rains), or simply you could be picking 12-24 hours too early before the berry is at the perfect ripe stage. I've seen berries go from not quite ready in the morning to perfect by the late afternoon to over-ripe by the next morning.

I am new to your channel and I am in your area north of Houston my question would you plant blackberries in the ground or containers, thanh you.
@TurnYourHeadandScoff
@TurnYourHeadandScoff 11 месяцев назад
My blackberries are most successful in ground in the native soil. They develop really hardy root systems, and then can handle our extreme Houston weather. In a pot, it's not likely they can handle the same extremes. If you are in a new home or development, usually those homes are no longer on native soil, so just keep that in mind. One final comment, if you noticed the patch in the video, that all came from 1 plant originally and spread. This is something I wanted to have happen, and I located my blackberries in a place where they were allowed to be as aggressive as they wanted. I have planted in other locations where I do not want this, and I simply dig up and give away extra plants when they pop up. Blackberry plants are a real hit at the plant swaps in our area!

Is the prime ark berry invasive?
@TurnYourHeadandScoff
@TurnYourHeadandScoff 2 месяца назад
It spreads vigorously through the underground root system like my other blackberry plants. Although that doesn't put it on the invasive list, new canes will pop up in my garden up to 10 feet away from the parent plant every spring.

I like to know what is mean by old cane and new canes
@TurnYourHeadandScoff
@TurnYourHeadandScoff Год назад
There are 2 ages of canes on a blackberry plant. First year canes are softer and won't bear fruit for most types of blackberries. Second year canes are still alive for their second year and bear fruit. After fruiting the canes begin to die. They are only alive 2 years maximum.
