Growing Broccoli Sprouts - Do they need to be kept in the dark for the first 4 days? An Experiment

Three methods were used here to grow broccoli sprouts: 1. in the dark for the first 4 days and greening up in the light on the 5th day, 2. Ambient light for all the days, 3. Under an LED grow light for all the days. Can you guess what happened....probably....but it was fun to see, and taste. Hope you enjoy!
If you want the stainless steel lids I used for sprouting, here is the Amazon link:

Sulforaphane starts decreasing after the sprouts start turning into microgreens, which happens around day five. That is why you should control the growth until day five by keeping the sprouts in the dark or low indirect light.

❤ Thanks for bringing this fact to light! 💡 The is true of all plants, once the cotyledons form, they start sapping the sprout of its nutrients to grow and green up. Some lab tests I’ve seen say maximum SF is at about day 2-3, but way too early to harvest, if you ask me. I grow mine in the dark and then freeze, to increase the SF, in 100g packets for my daily smoothie.

Thank you. I was confused by the unlimited videos saying to grow them in the dark. The first time I grew sprouts I was a complete novice. I grew them in the light and they turned out excellent, therefore confusing me after I saw allllllllll the videos instructing growers to place them in the dark. Your comparison confirmed my beliefs. You helped me see the LIGHT : )

I saw most say dark but I wanted to try it the simple way. I just left them on my kitchen counter near the window by the sink. So easy and in 6 days little bright green leaves and long white roots. Almost all seed sprouted. Easy!

Me too done them before in light an dno problem; but haven't done for years and this time everyone saying to grow in the dark..This was a great vid, thank you lady! Just set my seeds to start off.
@zanaros2606
@zanaros2606 10 месяцев назад
Depends on seed variety. Some seeds germinate worse with light, some doesn't care, some germinate and grow faster under light especially the smaller seed types. As for why many people recommend darkness...it's just a subjective belief that everyone simply believes in and copies and pass around as the objective truth, even though none of them actually tested it themselves. Human nature lol. Most social herd animals exhibit the same copying behavior.

I use jars that are probably twice the size of your jars, but I only use 1 tablespoon of seeds per jar. The sprouts have more room to grow and will then grow better. I also rinse them around every 4 hours and they are ready to turn green on the third day and soon are ready to eat.

This is an excellent experiment video. I'm thinking that the stronger taste of the more developed sprouts/microgreens may come from an increased amount of myrosinase enzyme, that with glucoraphanin, produces the sulforaphane. This is suggestive of a more nutritious product, which would also be attained from just allowing more growing time. Another enhancement trick, for producing increased sulforophane, is to freeze instead of refrigerate the sprouts. The freezing process produces molecular crystalization, which lices the cellular walls, which places the myrosinase and glucoraphanin reactants together, to more readily form the sulforaphane. This mimicks mastication (chopping, chewing), which acts to break down cellular walls, putting these reactants together. This works much the same way as snapping and mixing a chem-light, where the reaction of two chemicals produces a luminescent compound. Since heat deactivates myrosinase, all cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, kale, cabbage, brussel sprouts, etc.) should either be eaten raw, or chopped fine and let sit for 45-90 minutes before cooking, to allow the sulforophane reaction to occur, or add a myrosinase source after cooking, like mustard, mustard powder, or horseradish, and then chew well.

Good job setting up the test, but..... I wondered if temperature played a part. Under the grow light the temperature might have been higher, causing an earlier sprouting. As someone who sprouts seeds for transplanting to a garden, I know that temperature is important. So, I'm just adding a variable that wasn't controlled for. Still, the darkness might not be an important factor.

Excellent video very thorough one thing I would add rather than leave your stuff out on the counter for two hours to dry for the final process before you put them in the fridge or eat them especially on a regular paper towel which is loaded with chemicals unless it’s a unbleached paper towel why not simply just get a good salad spinner that’s what I’ve done before and it works excellent you don’t have to leave them out just trying to be helpful once again the very good video I’m beginning to wonder if you could’ve actually grown and indirect light as long as it wasn’t too hot

Otherwise it’s out of sight, out of mind for me. Also, my pantry is absolutely packed. I was literally going to conduct the same experiment and now I don’t have to! Thanks for this.
