The cantaloupes are going crazy! As such, I've decided to make the Cantaloupe and Watermelon videos into their own playlist.

After posting the growing Cantaloupe and Watermelon video back in late January, it seems that many viewers are interested in their progress.
In this video, I'll catch you up on the cantaloupes and sometime in the next episode or two maybe I'll have some watermelon to show off as well!
The cantaloupe seeds were pulled from a cantaloupe I purchased at Sprouts so we'll see how they grow and how they taste!

Rob Backyard Gardenerr I put some seeds in a pot just to see what it would do and it did start to grow. I know it most likely will not produce because it was in mid August when I did it but I most definitely will be growing alot more things next year and years to come.

Yes but last year my cantelope rotted while still growing. The vines were healthy, the cantelope looked good and I did get most of them off the ground. Idk what happened.

If you come them onto string/rope, can u leave the vines up when the cantelope get big? Will the rope hold the melons ?

This is exactly what I needed. I planted some myself earlier in the year and I know I'm approaching the month I was given for when they would be grown, I knew it required the plants fertilizing each other but I didn't know the specifics and what I should look for. I just hope mine will pollinate each other even though I've not seen many butterflies or bees in my back yard yet.

I'm growing cantaloupe in 3 different places in the garden. I had previously been concentrating on growing citrus trees so I found growing cantaloupe to be pretty easy.The plants have grown fast.

Ron Burrell Jr You can grow them on the ground or vertically. I have rabbits and rodents so I grow them somewhat vertically.

My cantaloupe plants are also going crazy! I dried out some cantaloupe seeds myself and threw them in a couple of 21" diameter pots (about16" deep) with a soil consisting of potting mix, mushroom compost, my own compost, and a little organic manure. They are in a sun shade mix all day and growing up some tomato cages. I have some bumblebees helping pollinate them and currently have about 15 melons the size of baseballs in July. Couldn't be happier! I built mesh tables for them to rest on off the ground and they are loving the air circulation as well as a platform to rest the fruit if needed. I was looking to prune them to either increase the size of the fruit or flavor. Not sure I need to but from what I'm learning about pruning leaves is that it yields better fruit. What are your thoughts on this? Nice garden by the way. I should start posting videos of my garden. I have a kale explosion! Spinach is not growing for some reason. I have tried from seedling 3 times this year. They die shortly after sprouting. Too hot I think. I am in a suburb of Chicago. Anyway, thanks!

David McNulty I have found that pruning the leaves yields better fruit as well. But I only pruned the diseased or distressed leaves, never took off healthy ones. You should definitely record your garden if not only for yourself to see but for any learnings as well! Happy Gardening David!

Didn't realize that cantaloupe is part of the Squash family. Your garden looks like a larger version of my two potted cucumber plants which also have slightly thin windy stem and bud with yellow flowers. Thanks for sharing this. I'm also growing cantaloupe from seed and they are sprouting nicely.

so glad i found this video... i ate a cantaloupe and just out of curiosity tried to see if I could grow something lol....and low and behold theyve been growing fast.... and I now see what u mean about the flowers... i have some skinny ones and a few fat ones. had no idea what the diff between male and female was lol. And also glad u pointed out the ants... ive been noticing them on my plants...didn't know it if was good or bad

I have three surprise plants growing since I tossed some scraps on the south side/front of my house early this summer. I'm here because two melons that are on the grass are getting brown lines/striations on them and was looking for some info. I put a board under them and straightened their stalks out, the stalks looked soaked. Maybe they were staying too wet on the grass or I should only water at the base of the plant not all over, I don't know. Seeds came from a store melon from Honduras or Guatemala, but they're growing up here in Winnipeg, a month late!! Enjoying your video...thank you!

How do the leaves look? Are they healthy? Remember that cantaloupes do like full sun so be sure that the vine is getting enough sunlight and water. Most melons don't like topical watering so try to avoid that if possible, but I'm also curious as to how much grass they are sitting on?

Leaves look great. Vines look great. They are on the south side with full on sun. I stopped watering all over, only at the base of the plants! It seems getting them off the ground and onto the boards has helped. The melons that got the brown striations were on grass (my front lawn), but now on boards. The grass they were on is healthy because I have been watering around there. The rest of my lawn is parched from the lack of rain. Also, the very first melon that appeared was on mud (not with the ones on the grass) and has rot on it's bottom from sitting on the wet mud (?), but it still looks great otherwise (also, now put on a board and that helped). I really appreciate your enthusiasm and for responding. We are in a heat wave in Winnipeg so this may be an unusual circumstance where I might get some ripe tropical melons in the north, even though they started a month late! Again, thank you so much for your videos.

Wow lovely cantaloupe so green nice plant what fertilizer have u used n when please lemn coz mine have small little tiny fruit but they turn yellow n fall off I tried to hand pollinate but didn’t succeeded 😢

Pushpa Bhatia once they start to flower you should feed a fertilizer with higher amounts of calcium and potassium versus nitrogen. A young Vine will drop a lot of it’s initial potential fruits but will hold them as it matures.

When do you harvest them? I planted 3 seeds on each hill mound in my box planter, and removed 1 each so I had two plants. They've gone nuts with tremendous growth and setting out the cantalopes. But none of the utoob vids tell you when to pick. Nice vid, thumbs up.

Hi Rob big fan here. Been watching ur videos for months now and u inspire me to grow cantaloupe plus it is my favourite fruit. I have a problem and need some assistance. I have been growing cantaloupe from MAY and now its AUGUST and it has flowers on it and they keep falling off and the flowers on it seem to be the male flower and i cnt seem to see any female flowers at all. Each time the flowers fall off they grow back but no female flowers and now they stop growing flowers all together on that particular plant. What could cause this to happen and what am i to do?? I wish i could show u pics. The other plants have flowers but i believe its going to be the same thing with them too. Just want to know why they are no female flowers and when would they be coming in?

cantalopes are normally grown on the ground because of the weight when ripe about 8 inchs or mor in dia several pounds weight

So I'm not an experienced garder. I love in a condo townhouse and have a small garden. Last year I ate the best melon ever and decided to plant all the seeds. I've been weeding my garden and pulling out unknown sprouts and then after working a lot of overtime for 2 weeks realized I have some vines growing where I buried those seeds. So I have no idea what I'm doing. Is every vine coming out of the ground a different plant or are they all connected? Can I move a couple? The area they are in is very small and if each vine coming out of the soil is going to be a different plant they won't have any room to grow? I'd really appreciate any advice. Thank you!

Great job on growing the cantaloupe my wife and I have started a garden for the first time and we're just putting a couple things in it but one thing I wanted in mind was cantaloupe I am a very big fan of cantaloupe it's my favorite fruit I know when you start your supposed to start it out of the garden for like 6 weeks and once it gets going then you transpot you know put it back to put it in your garden from a pot my question is how many seeds do I need to put in per hole if you would respond to my message I would appreciate it thank you very much

I've been doing research on this myself & I came across a website that said One seed can produce 6-8 cantaloupes on a vine, but once you collect your harvest & the vine dies that's it for that plant it doesn't come back the next year & you have to replant it again from scratch..

I assume you mean in the pot indoors? Seeds are cheap, so I usually put 3 or 4 seeds spaced out a few inches in each pot. Keep the soil moist and warm. When you get sprouts, let them go for a while and pick the best looking one. Pull out the rest and discard or separate them into different containers. Basically, my strategy is to start two or three times more seeds than I intend to grow to maturity, and pick the fastest growing or healthiest looking one in each container. Don't put more than one seed in the same hole though, it will be difficult to separate them if they both sprout... Unless you are just going to snip away all the extra ones around your favorite.

I had cucumbers and cantaloupe just appear under my tree about 6 weeks ago. Getting cantaloupe finally. And ants. For some reason, there's ants EVERYWHERE. Not sure what to do. I'm not a gardener lol.

T R here is an awesome and safe remedy: 1/2 cup dawn dish soap,, 1/2 cup cooking oil and 5 cups vinegar. Add all ingredients in a dollar tree spray bottle. Spray all those critters and Walla problem solved!!!! Try it! It will work in minutes! Not hours or days!! You can even used it in your home!!!

Are vine borers possible with cantaloupe? I have read they are but not sure. I've never had borers on my cucumber plants but I have had them to kill my squash and zucchini plants.

Mel Yalimaitoga The cantaloupes I grew had both male and female flowers. They started with all male flowers and then produced both - I believe this is common among all vining fruit.

Where do you live? As in what state? I live in PA and I've never grown anything before and decided to try this year. I have cucumber's, tomatoes, squash, zucchini, and I also am trying cantaloupe and sugar baby watermelons. the thing is everyone is laughing at me because I live in Pennsylvania and they claim that it is not going to be the right temperature to grow melons out here. but usually the more someone tells me I can't do something the more I want to do it to prove them wrong. Lol. I started them inside of course cuz I don't want to move them outside until it's steadily nice and warm being there melons. So far so good, they are growing nicely but I'm nervous about the actual transplant into the garden in a few weeks. Hopefully it will be good I'm going to try to keep the soil warm enough with black plastic mulch. Any tips???

My cantaloupes themselves seem to be doing okay but the leaves on the plants are turning yellow/brown.. should I pick them off? Could it be the heat (low 90s)? Overwatering? Underwatering? Pest/disease? How do I know?

sandy miranda - If it's what I think they are, they should be the vines that need to attach themselves to the fence (or whatever else is there). Beans do that, too. When the vines came out in my beans I put them next to my lattice so they could grab on and wrap around it and keep growing. My melons aren't at that stage yet. : )

Rob Backyard Gardenerr i plants tons, yet mines doesn’t have running vines and has already male flowers on them, no female flowers for pollination as yet, I’m curious do they still produce fruits if the tree don’t have running vines and is still a small plant?

Help! My cantaloupe Vines are ridiculously long but no flowers and it's been about a month-and-a-half since I planted the seeds. My guess if I can untangle them the vines are probably over 12 feet long. Still no flowers anywhere on any of them. What am I doing wrong? The Vines are so green and Lush I look beautiful and healthy. I want my cantaloupe. Where are the flowers? I said a month and a half but it's probably closer to two months ago

Easy to confused the cantaloupe plant with a honeydew melon plant and even with a cucumber plant. They are all vine plants and produce small yellow flowers.

All this time I thought the ants were *pollinating* my fruits! Son of a b**ch! I watched those little shits hang out on my flowers, thinking they had my back. Their nest might be getting dug up and set on fire now. Or maybe I'll try one of this aluminum anthill castings finally.

Do you know if the leafs mold like cucumbers do? Reason I am asking is I was thinking of growing some indoors but worry about white mold from the big leafs. Cucumbers mold very easy which looks like there leaf structure is similar.

All of my attempts at melons indoors have failed. They require so much nutrients and lighting. I have never had an issue with mold indoors though.

Thanks for the info. It's my first year growing a garden, so I'm struggling a bit lol. Can you grow melons in containers as well? I started some inside, but every time I take them outside they die🤦🏽‍♀️ idk what I'm doing wrong.

You can grow them in large pots, but you'll want to limit the actual melons to 3-5 otherwise you'll be constantly watering and fertilizing.

I heard when the seeds are young if the weather is appropriate, to introduce your container plants to outside a few hours every day at first, until your able to let them be in the Sun most of the day on good weather days, & bring them in at sundown, that way the time your ready to transfer them outside they won't die of shock because they aren't use to it, I'm learning that plants are alot like humans, they just look different & can't tell us what they need, like a pet basically😁

@@jennifercooley3313 thanks a lot. I've learned a little the last year. And your comment is exactly what I did!! 😆 I grew a few in pots, but I only got maybe 1 or 2 melons each. That were actually big. A lot them turned black on the bottom and died. Any idea why? Either way I look forward to spring to try again

Do you need to have a trellis when growing them? I have some plants at the moment and had a trellis but decided to take it out. Is it necessary?

Check for white fly. Be sure they have plenty of water and air flow.

My goodness they are so cute they look like fat caterpillars how many months does it take before they are fully ripe .....and do you eat what you grow and will they be sweet and better then store bought.....

Lisa Lee They are cute! Yes, i did eat them and it took a few months until harvest. The next few videos in the series shows how they grew and when I harvested them if you're interested in watching. It's one of my playlists. Thank you Lisa.
