Ow Wow! I love Mollies! Is this salinity lower because of mollies? Could I put with coral and 1.025? I thought I heard that some are brackish but didnt relize full salt! I like balloon mollies the best! My rock I started with had spores on it. I don't know if it was real or painted. Bought at my lfs. Think its caribe sea but my tank is almost 4 months and no coraline yet. didint spread! Rock is getting darker and getting some green on top that I do not like, so I am going to try to scrub that off. I kept my lights off for several months almost 3 and I have not had one spec of algae except now starting on rocks but just started feeding frags that got and dont have a skimmer! Maybe that why because that yucky reef roids that gets in water and with no skimmer there is really no way to get rid of it but a polishing sponge I think maybe working. Ijust started using one and about every 4 days or so I have to change it because its brown!
What a palaver. The easiest way is to grind up the coralline into a paste with a mortar and pestle. Any pests get made into paté. Also, you won't have any nubbly bits to get rid of. I got super-quick colonisation this way.
@Colin Maniscalco it was a local fish store that I had a good relationship with and talked them into selling it to me I would suggest you go to a store close to you and find something covered with caroline algae be it small rubble, rocks, frag plugs, plastic and see if they will sell it
SSEEAAAHHHAAAWWWKKKSSS RULE!!!!!!!! I would suggest acclimating for as long as you possibly can, also go for black mollies (although finding true blacks are hard nowadays) Dalmatian mollies also seem to take better to the saltwater change too. I’ve successfully added 50+ mollies to saltwater and my best results have been when I drip acclimate for 12 hours. Though I’m almost positive where you get your fish from and what country you live in will make a difference, it seems to be way more common to see them in marine tanks in the US than here in the uk. Good luck
Hey were the fish ok after eating all that crushed up rock? I guess it's similar to natural reef breakdown from waves and violent big fish and stuff, but seeing little fish gobble up pulverized coral fragments that might contain toxins has me worried. Is anything in the coraline algae toxic to fish or inverts if it gets released into the water? (edit: also "supplemental" is totally a word no worries there hahaha)
I just git a reef tank from a fella who is moving across the country. his/my live rock is purple I was like is this bad or good and now I know. thanks for the information. be well!
Off topic, but do you recommend the drop algae scraper that you had on your JBJ 45? I am deciding between that or innovative media reactor with GFO. Thanks
Just take a rock with coralline turn your pumps and skimmer off - take a knife and scrape away - swish knife in water and turn everything back on 15 min later - Case closed
OR just pay 20 bucks for coralline spores in a bottle that has like 4 different varieties and pour that shit into the tank. 30 seconds at most and is truly one easy step.
