Thanks for your video Jim, I followed it and was able to grow some Platycerium superbum fifteen years ago, gave to five of my friends and they are huge now, Did another sowing of spores 5 years ago and have now more than 20 of them growing /thriving successfully . Thanks again!
This was a cool video to stumble across. I'm gonna give this a go. My first thought was "Aw, I'm not patient enough for that," but then I thought - hang on, most of the process is ignoring your plants for months? I can do that! That's my specialty!
I used your tech and it worked perfectly (in slow motion). I import spores from Siam...site and have four species going. I have been growing and collecting Platy's and other exotics for about thirty years successfully and this is just another really cool adventure and like any other culture, sour dough,yogurt etc. has it's hits and misses, but as the saying goes, "Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained" I've imported a few other rare ferns and will try to propagate them sometime along the line. The nice thing, that green growth starts in just a few days and that "sows" great motivation! (although that mold looking growth is only the start to a long journey) So thanks, I watched this many times as further reminder.
Hi jimb, I have a 9 foot Cyathea Cooperi which has been dropping spores every year for the past 3 or 4 years. Last year I found some baby ferns in other potted plants on my court yard. This year those 12 babies are in one gallon containers and doing great. So this year I've decided to collect the spores like your video show and try your method. I'll let you know how it comes out. Oh Lord.I tried this- It took 5-6 months to see life. And then. Just as they started to form recognizable. Something wiped them out. I was so excited! It seems like you have to have surgical hygiene to succeed at this lengthy process. I'm trying again though.

I know this is 6 years late, but I agree! I hate that people tear one another down because they may do something differently! This is just how this man does it and if it works for him and he's teaching others then what's wrong with that? I never try to say anything bad about anyone doing something in the plant industry that I may do differently, this is a beautiful hobby and business and we need to support one another!
I grew some ferns from spores. I couldn't believe I accomplished that. What I would love to see is what you do with the newly sprouted seedlings to keep them happy such as when to remove from the original container then do they need to be uncovered and soil mix changed and basically get them from new seedlings to young adults.

I am unsure if you are aware of a perched water table but adding perlite to the bottom, or stones or anything for drainage does nothing but shorten the depth your roots ability to breathe. No matter how deep or shallow your soil it will always develop the same perched water table. Watch Betsy Begonia’s explanation as it is very well done. I believe she titles it, don’t put stones in bottom of your pot for drainage or something like that.

Thanks for this video! If microwaving was to sterilize, shouldn't you keep your hands off the soil after you do that? I basically tried your method using spore from my staghorn, but didn't boil my water, and after 3 months am finally seeing babies! I poured a spot of water with african violet fertilizer and some horticultural charcoal in the middle of my container yesterday, hoping its ok, but it really takes patience for these! Wonder what would be the ideal fertilizer. Thanks thanks thanks.
I attempted this about a decade ago, when there was only one or two website on the process. Didn't work out. Interesting how times they do change. How long would it take to get a decent size fern? And how long did it take to grow that giant staghorn there?

VERY helpful, once you get the spores grown and they are about 7-8 months old and get planted out into 4" pots, what is that soil made off? What is the consistency of the potting mix! thanks

what happens if you dont have a microwave? also one question... isn't water from a tea kettle like the opposite of distilled? but I guess if it works its work right..

Can the female leaf of a Staghorn Fern be planted/rooted by itself, or would i need the male part also. i picked up the female parts i found someone had thrown away and was wondering if they would take root. I will be scraping off the spore from the tips of these and try this method. Thanks.
Can I grow Boston Fern in plastic zipper bags that are in pockets of vertical garden planter? I got a some of does 4 pocket vertical pockets planters that are for outdoor use. Now since I live in apartment, I have no good outdoor space. Of course, I do not want to screw up my wall with water, so I thought to use zipper bags to fix water leak problem. Can something like that work or do you have any better ideas? I am a beginner in this, so any advice would be more than appreciated :)

Mmmm, I love trapping myself in an enclosed space and inhaling fern spores and glass dust from perlite, which is made from glass. Fantastic job and information in this video! Though, I worry for your lungs. Please take care around that stuff, it’s real nasty when inhaled. Microscopic glass shards can only be surgically removed🤢😱
Hi, Great video!I have a Tree Fern that is a few years old that has a "pup"(?) growing off the side of it.Can the pup be separated from the "mother" and planted much like an agave pup or will it not survive the separation? Thanks. Best of Luck!
Hi there, i was wondering what is the % of peat and moss media??? as i might have to make my own if i can't go buy some from a gardening shop already made up for spore growing.
lol sorry but I can't help but laugh but now I feel bad & so have to answer the question for you. "Peat moss" is decomposed sphagnum, it's a single thing not 2 things mixed. I'm not sure, but I suspect any soil like product you can buy with a name of "peat" on it would be peat moss. Don't add growing moss to your mix whatever you do!!!!!!

Do you have any idea if variegation in ferns is inherited through spores? I wasn't able to find much info in my research. I'd love to be able to spore prop some my variegated ferns and get more variegated ferns!
Awesome vid I never knew they had a sperm/egg set up fascinating 😀 we have beautiful tree ferns here in NZ we call them Ponga Tree you called it Australian tree fern bloody aussies always trying to take credit for NZ’s beautiful things !!! im not saying this to be rude or dis you. but i noticed you think boiling water makes it distilled in truth yes but you have to collect the water vapor(evaporation of the boiling water) for it to be really distilled so basically you are just adding boiled water which is interesting cause i think they are benefiting from the minerals even though there are impurity's. just thought i point it out and let you know. sorry if i offended you no harm ment. but good instructions none the less.
