Many of the foods I love I simply can't eat ~ or I end up in great pain. Through gardening, I've discovered alternative veggies that give me the flavors I crave without any of the pain. In this video, I share replacement suggestions for cabbage, garlic, and onion, including nutritional information and how to best grow and propagate these alternative veggies.
While those of us who deal with stomach sensitivities and IBS symptoms all experience these issues in different ways, these veggies have worked wonders for me. Perhaps they'll work for you, too! At least, this video might spark ideas for you, encouraging you to experiment with alternative veggies and fruits, Who knows? Some of them could end up being your new favorites - delicious, nutritious, and pain-free.
Hi, I'm Kim, and this is Olive City Oasis. I live on my 2.5 acre property here in far northern California, Zone 9B.
I like to emphasize easy gardening anyone can do - even brand-new beginners! I also have an ongoing obsession with growing edible and medicinal herbs, as well as interesting fruit and nut trees!
On my channel, I enjoy sharing my fruit trees, my veggie and herb gardens, perennial flowers, garden-to-table recipes, and simple living garden ideas. I keep things down-to-earth, casual, and encouraging. I also talk about self-care through gardening because I believe experiencing nature is extremely important to our physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

The severe pain I always felt after eating is GONE, and my experience with food is positive now. The foundational practices I discuss here, in addition to #7 (which I'll share in an upcoming video), truly changed my life for the good.
~~Working in the HERB GARDEN -- The Wonders of BORAGE!~~
• Working in the HERB GA...
BORAGE is amazing! It's a medicinal herb with numerous health benefits that's also great for the garden. Borage makes wonderful fertilizer and compost, gradually improving your soil and feeding your vegetables and flowers, and it also adds a delicious cucumber-like flavor to salads and smoothies. Plus, it self-sows like crazy and is super easy to grow!

Please share in the comments any alternative veggies and fruits *you* grow that reduce or eliminate your pain and other stomach issues! I'm so interested to hear your experience! 😊 P.S. - the upcoming video I mention in *this* video (covering ways I've learned over the years to deal with my extremely sensitive stomach) will be published very soon. Be on the lookout for it if you'd like to explore this topic a little more deeply. 😊

Fortunately, I've been blessed with a cast iron stomach, having eaten cousine in several countries outside the USA. It is starting to loose its enamel finish, so I have to stay away from hot peppers. I can still eat mild chilies and jalapenos, but have to avoid habanaro and serrano peppers. I've started cleanup harvests of my first crop tomato plants, and have removed half of the plants, with eight remaining. They will be coming out soon. My secxond crop tomato plants are healthy and setting fruit despite the summer heat. I lost two more zucchini, and am down to one plant with ripening zucchini on it. My cucumbers are still producing, and I harvested and ate my first garden grown cantaloulpe this morning. It was smaller, but a lor sweeter and flavorful than any stor bought cantalpouope I've ever eaten. The little chicks are getting bigger, and are a few days away from six weeks old. They have the full run of the chicken run, but have to stay within its confines because of predators-cats, dogs, bobcat, puma, racoon, hawks, coyotes, fox, and more. Their head feathers and crowns are coming in.

@@jaytoney3007 Hi, Jay! That's great that you haven't had any problems with food or your digestive system. Well, except for now, with the hot peppers. ☺️ I'm still harvesting tons of cherry tomatoes from two dozen plants, but I've started thinking about taking a few of them out. Let's just say that the 110-118° heat hasn't been kind to them. 😧 But I've spotted several healthy young tomato volunteers throughout the garden, so I think we'll be good on that front through the fall. 😎 This past week, in addition to the Cherry Tomatoes, I've harvested a bunch of big Armenian Cucumbers and Zucchini, as well as Walking Onions, Purple Tree Kale, Plums, & Pluots. Your chicks are sure growing up fast! Enjoy them! 😊

The purple tree kale looks really majestic and is so beneficial 🌝👍 Those gophers are terrible. You don't see them and then a tree is gone. Your 🐱 is so cute.

way of getting around your stomach issues, Kim! I have no such issues but I remember the pain as a child eating too many green apples, gooseberries & rhubarb! Looking forward to the Great Gopher War! :)

Oh, I can relate to eating too much fruit at one time! Especially this month... Out watering in my orchard this morning, and I cannot *possibly* tell you how many Plums, Pluots, and Peaches I've eaten! 😂 None of it counts though if you eat in the orchard or garden. 😎

I don't have any stomach issues but I love the purple tree kale. It makes an amazing Coleslaw. I hope your garden is doing okay, mine is suffering a bit in this heat. Not much setting fruit, but im sure once we get past this current heatwave. Stay cool and water early.

@@KarenBowers4 Hi, Karen! 🙋‍♀️ Yes, Purple Tree Kale is *delicious* - and such a resilient plant! I know, the heat is really doing a number on some of the veggies and on a few of my fruits. You've heard of Baked Apples? Well, I've got some Baked Pluots! 😱😭 Most of the garden is still doing well, but I will definitely be glad to get back down below 110° for a while! (And 118-120° is just ridiculous. 🤨) Hope you cool off soon, too!

@@OliveCityOasis I’m already happy today it’s going to be 100 but I’ll take that over 115 any day. Yeah my peach tree dropped a few peaches. Enjoy the cooler weather

@@KarenBowers4 Yay, Karen!!!! 100° sounds awesome! 🤗 And I'm glad you've only lost a few peaches. I started harvesting mine yesterday. They fared much better than the plums and pluots. It's supposed to hit 104° here today, but currently, at 6:20am, it's only 75°!!!! Can't remember the last time I saw a temp in the 70s! (Sadly, it comes with 40% humidity - so weird!)

Oh boy thank you thank you thank you. I haven't watched it yet but I was just thinking boy I miss eating cabbage and I haven't had broccoli and cauliflower way over 10 years. I don't know if you're going to dress that in this video but oh boy I'm going to see what you have to say

While I didn't talk about "replacements" for broccoli or cauliflower, I'll be putting up another video soon (probably on Sunday) that goes into many ways I deal with chronic stomach pain. I'll definitely touch on broccoli and other 'favorite' foods as well. 😊

This was great I keep a list in my notes on my phone of things I want to grow so now I have added the tree kale and the Egyptian walking onion.
